forgot to post this yesterday...I'm walking downtown Philly yesterday with my girlfriend and who is jogging towards me? LINDY EFFIN RUFF. And i didn't punch him in the balls or trip him...if Buffalo wins tonight and we lose...I'm sorry guys. (This an honest to God story)

Big game tonight? I expect the Caps to lay an egg. That's been their M.O. all season, so I'm not optimistic at all.

Speaking of Philly...pains me that my favorite player (Wayne Simmonds) is a Flyer. I was in Philly a few months back and almost pulled the trigger on a Simmonds jersey. Just couldn't do it. LOL...had the jersey in my hand and walked up to the register, but I just felt dirty for coming thiiiiis close to buying something orange/black. Anyways, I'm stoked that he's had a hell of a year...hopefully he'll keep it up.

Does anyone have ESPN in? I want to read this story about Brooks Laich and his playoff prediction.

On Wednesday morning, Washington Capitals forward Brooks Laich told a local radio station that Washington was going to make the playoffs. And in today's world, word travels fast. It evolved into a guarantee and soon the Buffalo Sabres were commenting on Laich's comment.

    Bruce Bennett/Getty Images
Brooks Laich stands by his belief that the Caps will make the playoffs.
Washington currently sits in eighth place in the Eastern Conference at 88 points. Buffalo is in ninth with the same point total and the regulation wins tiebreaker against them.

Usually when a story travels this fast, a player backtracks. He says his quote was taken out of context. But give Laich credit, he stood by everything he said when we chatted this afternoon.

"I'm not backing down from my comments. I believe in our group," he said. "If you asked any player on our team or Buffalo, they would say the same thing."

And really, what should we expect Laich to say? The Capitals aren't going to make the playoffs? Laich doesn't necessarily see his comments as a guarantee but more a show of confidence.

The Capitals host Florida on Thursday in a game that could decide the Southeast division champions. Then they travel to New York for a season-ending game against a Rangers team that doesn't have much to pay for.

The odds look pretty good for Laich's statement to come true.

"If you play this game and you don't believe 100 percent in your cause, there's no sense being around. You have no sense being here," Laich said. "You have to show confidence. That's it. I believe in our group. I believe we're going to make the playoffs."

For those interested, the original radio interview with The Junkies is here: Laich: "We're making the playoffs."

And how did Sabres goalie Ryan Miller's respond in comments to the Buffalo News? "We're not playing against him and I don't think he's Mark Messier. I think he's searching for a spark."

    Ah, the stretch drive ...

Thanks man. I wish Ovie had the heart of Brooks Laich or Brooksy was the Captain.

Why? Brooks Laich talks a BIG game but doesn't back up his words (a lot of the time). There's a reason why AO was VOTED to wear the "C" by his teammates (Laich included) when Clark was traded. I like Laich...I really do. But people see this rah-rah guy in front of the media all the time and assume that he should automatically be the captain. I don't agree with it. I'm not saying that Ovechkin is perfect or anything along those lines, but the captaincy is fine the way it is.

Almost expecting them to completely fall flat tonight. Seems like whenever there's been a big game mentality at home, we choke. Very uncharacteristic of the past few years, but seems to plague us this year.

You do know Brooks is one of the hardest working guys on this team. He has never taken his talent for granted and from all accounts he is very seriously about his diet. He doesn't really touch alcohol. Came back a day later after a knee injury. Dude has all the heart in the world. So yes I wish more guys acted like that. That kind of example should be the guy who leads your team. He isn't the best player on the score sheet, but he has heart. It would be nice if some guys had half that heart, is all I am saying.

I wish I could afford to go tonight. This will be a playoff atmosphere and that would be the closest I'll probably make this year with the cost of playoff tickets.

Agree with you. Being the Captain of a hockey team is more than putting points on a scoresheet. If that were the case, Jeff Halpern and Chris Clark would never have had the C.

    Panthers 4, Caps 3. We blow a 2-0 lead.

You do know that Laich was part of the voting process that annoited Ovechkin the captian, right? Like I said, I'm not saying that Ovechkin is perfect...but Laich ROUTINELY talks a big game, but more often than not, doesn't back it up.

*Random question....why has it taken so long for Laich to get an "A" on his sweater? He hasn't had it until this year, and it was only after Backstrom's injury when the "A" was on a rotating basis between him, Chimera, and Brouwer.

I actually saw some tickets I could afford tonight but no one wants to go cuz they think we'll completely choke and its not fun going to a Caps game alone. I guess I'll just save my money for next year(ain't no way I'm gonna be able to afford playoff tickets lol)

My gut says we win tonight.

But Saturday vs the Rangers has me worried to death.
