And the parallels between this election and the '04 election continue to pop up

It shouldn't be close at all because the economy is horrible, and that is what typically determines elections in this country.

I do think Romney has made many mistakes in this election, namely the decision to lead with falsehoods rather than run on the economy where Obama is most vulnerable.

I also think however the closeness of the race is less a reflection on Romney's campaigning ability, and more a reflection on the party's proclivity to make there guy unelectable in the primaries, and blame it all on him in the general.

Steve Jobs screwed me when he saw the future of music and came up with iTunes?

You have a powerful weapon in the fact that several Republicans have said outlandish things this cycle. Don't let it go to waste by repeating their mistake.
I know that products are produced/manufactured that we want/need in today's society. Much of advertising is to convince us that we NEED/not want these things. But most businesses operate on the principle that they must make profit; indeed the IRS mandates that a business must be successful by a certain number of years, yes? I don't think that businesses operate on some altruistic mandate. And multinational businesses are worse for US economy and US workers because they offshore labor to the detriment of working men and women in this country. So the basic principles that rule for profit business don't apply to government.

And to you really think that Toyota and Apple really care about the people for whom they manufacture items and not the bottom line? Sure Jobs developed iTunes and it's cool and all and makes life easier for us music lovers, but I don't for a minute think that profit and what he could make off of that technology didn't enter into the equation in a big way. And really, what products could we do without? How many are "nice to haves?" Those products aren't developed altruistically, they are developed for profit and if it's something we don't need for survival, then in my mind they are screwing their customers.

You've lost me here. Why wouldn't a business want to make a profit? Sure there are non-profits out there, but most people don't open up a business to lose money or just to make people happy.

So you're saying that unless a business produces something we need, they are bad?

I'm saying that running a for profit business, whose reason for existence is to make a profit is not the same as running a government. The capitalists in recent times have taken their theories to the level that greed is good because it maximizes profits. We see it on Wall Street and the deregulation of much of businesses so that the greater good is lost. I look at government as providing the greater good. We are the ONLY industrialized first world country that doesn't provide universal healthcare on some level, and that's because Nixon and his Congresses and every administration thereafter including Dems have made the healthcare industry a for profit business and it's been harder than ever to make sure that all US citizens have good healthcare, not just the wealthy. This is only one example.

How many times do business people sit around and dream up products and then spend advertising dollars to convince us that we need them? It happens every day. Sure some products have advanced the ease of everyday life. But how many government policies are there especially in the tax code that make it easier for industries like the oil industry to stay in business instead of putting forth effort into alternative energy products? And do you think for one moment that the Republicans if they control all 3 branches won't again kill alternative energy just like Reagan did in the early 80s just so the oil industry can continue to make obscene profits?

It's one reason why when I have my new house I'm going to have solar, wind and water if I can to power my home so I won't be beholden to for profit utilities and have to make monthly payments just to have a quality of life.

Wow, um... wow. You've really committed to going down the rabbit hole with this train of thought. It's especially ironic that you've done it by typing on some electronic device (which you don't need for survival) to post on a message board (which you don't need for survival) on the Internet (which you don't need for survival) dedicated to a football team (which you don't need for survival).

CNN Camerawoman "Not Surprised" by Peanut-Throwing

Patricia Carroll, the CNN camerawoman who was assaulted with peanuts and called an animal by two attendees at the Republican National Convention, told Journal-isms on Thursday that "I hate that it happened, but I'm not surprised at all."

Carroll, who agreed to be named for the first time, said she does not want her situation to be used for political advantage. "This situation could happen to me at the Democratic convention or standing on the street corner. Racism is a global issue," she said by telephone from Tampa.

Carroll said no one took the names of the attendees who threw peanuts at her Tuesday on the convention floor and told her, "This is what we feed animals." She alerted fellow camera operators, producers and CNN security. The head of the delegation — she was not certain of the state — told her the perpetrators must have been alternates, not delegates.

But Carroll, 34, said that as an Alabama native, she was not surprised. "This is Florida, and I'm from the Deep South," she said. "You come to places like this, you can count the black people on your hand. They see us doing things they don't think I should do."

Carroll noted of the Republican convention, "There are not that many black women there."

She said she wanted to thank CNN, which "has been behind me 100 percent." Although she was stationed on the floor next to Fox News, the perpetrators "didn't know what I was doing. I happened to be standing there," near one of the delegations.

"I can't change these people's hearts and minds," Carroll added. "No, it doesn't feel good. But I know who I am. I'm a proud black woman. A lot of black people are upset. This should be a wake-up call to black people. . . . People were living in euphoria for a while. People think we're gone further than we have."

Carroll said she had received many requests for interviews and was in meetings most of Wednesday. "I was hoping this story would go away," she said. "I'm not interested in talking to any other media about this."

Yep, I've been screwed! And I've bought into the advertising and what not. Even more ironic is that my client base is government contractors and I make my living off of government contractors who make profit off of government contracts. And yes, I feel hypocritical every day I do this work and it's why I'm working so that I can quit doing this work. Want to hear more irony? I'm against war yet work for the war machine and have for years. And I got started doing this work because I needed to support my daughter because her father didn't acknowledge her as his kid and didn't support her. So I did what most here advocate, I got a job doing something I'm very good at and I've been doing it for over 30 years. Now I'm near retirement and can finally live my principles. But I will continue to use these products and internet for my radical lesbian feminist organizing because we do live in the 21st century. But I expect to live a much simpler life in the very near future, most likely in the Republic of Texas.

Business are about bottom line. Period. They're about profit. That's why the only thing these businessman know how to do when they get elected is cut and cut and cut without increasing revenue. LSF isn't saying business isn't important; she's saying that you can't run the country like a business, because the purpose of business is to make money. It's set-up directly opposite the intended purpose of government. The purpose of the government is not to make money.

No, she's saying that businesses inherently screw people. And that's insane.

Sadly though, as near as I can tell the goal is simply power. There isn't a super goal. It isn't about states rights, not about debt, not about fiscal responsibility. You can see too many contradictions in their plans for that to be true.

It concerns me deeply. I wonder how aware of this they are.
Funny that you give them that much credit. I see them as blatantly a racist and sexist party - and I hate using both those words, but I get tired of trying to find "softer" ways to explain why they do what they do. I don't think every republican shares these principles, but those in power in that party do and what upsets me is that these people who are my friends who are Republicans sit and listen to the stuff and try to defend it, but only wind up repeating the racism and sexism and wonder why I get mad at them.

It'd be interesting if the people in power actually cared about issues, but they're more interested in an agenda.

They're acting like they care about the debt ceiling. Most of that's stuff that they voted for before Obama got into office. Suddenly when Obama got into office, they want to act like they're all about the debt.

They act like they care about jobs, but they refuse to pass a jobs bill. They pass like 100 resolutions about the affordable care act, but refuse to come to the table about jobs.

I think about the comments when Obama nominated two women for the Supreme court, they got mad that he didn't nominate White men, saying that there were qualified candidates he didn't even look at. Now if that ain't the pot calling the kettle Black.

We just see a party that hasn't reached out to Blacks, hasn't reached out to women, hasn't reached out to Latinos, so their base consists of mostly White men. And so they're doing things to appease that base, and saying **** everybody else. And it really sucks.

    You mean they don't?

I mean certainly ALL of them don't. But MOST view us as what we are; consumers. It's less about business screwing us and more about business trying to sell us stuff. Which they all do. Like the aforementioned "BIC Pens for Women" thing. Like...why can't a pen just be a pen? Was there a severe drought in the lady pen market?

Business exist to sell us stuff, sometimes at all cost, sometimes at the cost of their sanity. That is not the way government works. I don't think LSF is saying business is trying to screw us as much as she's saying business exist to sell us stuff and make money.
