Now, I will observe that (as far as i know), donating money to charity never makes somebody a profit.

Far as I know, Romney can't give a million to the church, and get $1.2M from the feds.

(I say "as far as I know", because I assume that Romney has some people working for him who know a lot more about avoiding taxes than I do.)

However, the charitable tax deduction does mean that the government subsidizes his charity.

Assuming that Romney is in the top, 35%, marginal tax bracket (which he is, if he has more than $100K of earned, as opposed to capital gains, income), then when Romney gives a million to his church, the feds knock $350K off of his taxes. In effect, Romney gives $650K to his church, and the feds give another $350K. (The same thing is true about the money Romney pays on his mortgage. He pays two dollars, the feds pay a third.)

(This is one of those funny things about tax deductions: It can at least be thought of as a federal subsidy, with the biggest subsidy going to the richest people.)

Pennsylvania poll: Obama up by 11

A Philadelphia Inquirer poll released Saturday has President Barack Obama leading Mitt Romney in Pennsylvania, 50 percent to 39 percent.

    From the press release:

The post-convention surge that is often anticipated by both political parties in polling data appears to currently benefit President Barack Obama, who leads Republican Presidential Nominee Mitt Romney by 11 points among likely voters in the Keystone State, 50% to 39%, with a margin of error +/- 4%.

Pennsylvania Democrats are more consolidated behind Obama, with 77% in favor of Obama and 13% in favor of Romney, while Republicans are 18% in favor of Obama and 71% in favor of Romney.

The voters provided their opinion of the President, with a 56% favorable/40% unfavorable rating.

Following the conventions, Obama’s favorability rating has increased by 3 points, while his unfavorable rating has decreased by 6 points. Opinions of Romney have improved slightly following the conventions, but he still has a net negative personal popularity rating among voters in state, with 46% favorable/48% unfavorable rating.

As the first post-convention poll out of Pennsylvania, the 11-point margin among likely voters underscores why the state is fading from the battleground radar. The Inquirer’s last poll, fielded in late August, reported a 51 percent to 42 percent Obama advantage.
GOP poll also shows Romney down in Ohio

A new GOP poll fresh out of the field in Ohio has good news and bad news for Republicans. The good news: Mitt Romney’s deficit in Ohio is perhaps not as bad as the seven points the NBC/WSJ/Marist survey released last night has him down by. The bad news: Romney is still losing in the Buckeye State.

The Republican poll, an internal survey not taken for Romney’s campaign, shows President Obama leading Romney by four points in Ohio. It was conducted this week.

What does Santorum mean by this? Is it just pandering to anti-intellectualism? Or is there something else he is getting at?

It's sarcasm in a way, it is the "smart people" aren't conservative, it is a charge of elitism, and totally an appeal to those who feel that certain intllectuals are self proclaimed "smart people". Santorum knows what he's doing thowing this red meat out there.

Maybe he did finger quotes when he said it . Yeah, anti-intellectualism is nothing new in the Republican party, but it still makes a hilarious quote. I think that we are starting to see some negative effects for the Republicans due to tactics such as this. Rick Santorum being a front runner for the nomination being one of them.

Its like Palin's "Real America" thing. Like NYC or Chicago or Boston aren't REAL America because they are more liberal areas of one giant nation. Both parties live and breathe on contradiction in their own values. Seems the GOP is taking it to new heights. Is anybody going to say Romney a common Real American? He's a silver spoon suckin', ivy league college educated, analytical in business thinkin', tin eared guy running with an R next to his name.

Anti-intellectualism made the voters almost nominate a hypocrite who panders to people's prejudices against "liberal intellectuals" by denigrating higher education despite the fact that he personally values it. It fires up ~ 30% of the people. I believe a majority of Americans see the hypocrisy and would be very happy if their kids were smart enough to get in Harvard or Yale.

I think Santorum messed up when he said "smart people". What he probably wanted to say was "intellectuals". Funny how words and phrases carry meta-messages.
