McCain was on BBC radio this morning and didn't dispute the number. He said more ships and planes are needed if we are shifting our focus to the Pacific since it's the Pacific is so vast. He also said that there are savings to be had in defense (how defense contracts are done was his only example) so the total number wouldn't be 2 trillion. When asked if the US could realistically afford two trillion more in defense spending he said that defense spending wasn't the reason we have deficits.

We are the unchallenged super power, yet our defense budget (in total including nukes in DOE etc., and black ops) is probably more than all other nations combined. Why? Why is this necessary?

The reason is that our military is the mercenary force for the US multinational corporations for their protection in other countries. The Republicans voted down more security protection in our overseas embassies as requested by the State Department, yet now they are blaming the administration for not providing enough security at these same embassies! Hypocrites and liars, everyone of them.

Duh, PBS and food stamps are the reason.

I though China was passing us and just put a Carrier at sea?
Iran has nukes any day now.
Yemen just killed an ambassador security chief and we just sent troops to Jordan..
The State Department and Hillary are in charge of the Embassies.

He said it was the 19% of discretionary spending that was the problem. His words, not mine.

Funding was cut to security at embassies though not as much as the Republicans wanted to cut. China put out an old carrier they bought from one of the former soviet states I think but from my understanding that don't have planes that could land on it.

Interesting that money was available for Volts and comedy tours

Four days later, on May 7, the State Department authorized the U.S. embassy in Vienna to purchase a $108,000 electric vehicle charging station for the embassy motor pool’s new Chevrolet Volts. The purchase was a part of the State Department’s “Energy Efficiency Sweep of Europe” initiative, which included hundreds of thousands of taxpayer dollars on green program expenditures at various U.S. Embassies.
In fact, at a May 10 gala held at the U.S. embassy in Vienna, the ambassador showcased his new Volts and other green investments as part of the U.S. government’s commitment to “climate change solutions.”
The event posting on the embassy website read: “Celebrating the Greening of the Embassy.”
While the embassy in Vienna was going green, the consulate in Benghazi was getting bombed, and little was done to stop it.
Before the terrorist attack that took the lives of Ambassador Chris Stevens, Sean Smith, Glen Doherty and Tyrone Woods, there were more than 230 security incidents in Libya between June 2011 and July 2012.
Of those attacks, 48 took place in Benghazi, two at the U.S. diplomatic compound and scene of the September 11, 2012, terrorist attacks.

Sure, why not? It's the truth and let the chips fall where they may.

Bottom line, Republicans cut the embassy security budget.

Yes cause you didn't actually address the fact that the Obama administration wanted more money for embassy security and the Republicans wanted to cut it. Suggesting that embassy security and the Volt are related is a fallacy.

Let's also understand how governmental budgeting works.

You have 2 pots of money. 1 for personal service (to pay the fully loaded salaries) and another pot of money for operating expenses (of which, the Volts would have fallen under).

Comparing the security budget (hundreds of millions) to a charger for a volt(100,000) is kind of a joke. Talk about "playing games"...
