This is 100% due to the Republicans getting ideologically sloppy over the last 12 years or so. They refuse to acknowledge any information that isn't what they want to hear. They've become so cowardly that they refuse to look even at raw data objectively, and so they get blindsided by reality when their fortress of bull**** suddenly collapses. It was easy to see -- in fact it was almost unavoidable -- that Obama had a slim but tangible lead going in to election day. An overwhelming majority of polls painted that picture, particularly in the swing states. But Republicans had spent so much time only accepting the data points they WANTED to be true, that they were completely unprepared. It's a good thing Mitt lost: a good leader must be smart enough to asimilate all information, both good and bad, into his decisionmaking process.

Yeah, that's the biggest difference, I think. Hutchison and W were at least somewhat friendly towards immigrants; at the very least they weren't openly hostile towards them in the way that many in the current GOP seem to be.

The fact that Mitt didn't even bother to write anything other than a victory speech spoke volumes to me in that way. Not sure if it was willful ignorance, arrogance, or a combination of both.

Yeah, and W mentioned Amnesty, and got railroaded by his own Party for it.

The simple reality is that millions of illegals are already here. They have families, they have jobs. Many of them own businesses and homes. Their "anchor baby" children are citizens who have been attending American schools.

They're here to stay. Any immigration proposal needs to recognize that fact. You may not like it. (And, personally, I don't. Far as I'm concerned, they're criminals who are being rewarded for their criminality because there are simply so many criminals. No different from "too big to fail" businesses.) But it's a fact.

The drumbeat over the last 10 to 15 years that the "mainstream media" cannot be trusted became so internalized among the conservative faithful that the distrust became absolute.

The best thing that could happen for the conservative movement would be for Fox News to become a responsible media outlet with a conservative point of view instead of a right wing propaganda machine. But unless there is some serious soul searching by Roger Ailes and crew, I don't see that happening.

How can a party be the party of the libertarians and the religious right?

If the Republicans can keep those movements in their tent for this long, they can find ways to include other groups.

Wouldn't it be something if they found a way to become the party of radicals from both the left and right?

Their first response after losing the election was to point out a huge minority turnout and then to go ahead and claim that the country has changed, and people want 'free stuff'.

They are giving their viewers exactly what they want. Self re-assurance of a completely delusional ideology. I think it's a chicken or the egg dilemma with fox and the right wing. Is Fox misinforming people or are people tuning in just to be reassured of their ideologies?

Yup. One candidate ran on free-dom. The other ran on free-stuff.

More wingnut news from Texas and the use of the words 'Cede' and 'Union' Is it ok to use the term "jumped the shark" with them now.

Peter Morrison, Texas GOP Official, Calls For 'Amicable Divorce' From 'Maggots' Who Voted For Obama

As some Republicans continue to cope with the prospect of another four years under President Barack Obama, a Texas GOP official is floating a simple way out: cleaving his state from the union.

Peter Morrison, treasurer of the Hardin County Republican Party, wrote a column in the post-election edition of his Tea Party newsletter this week calling for an "amicable divorce" from the U.S., the Fort Worth Star-Telegram reports.

"Why should Vermont and Texas live under the same government?" he wrote. "Let each go her own way."

Morrison went on to express anger at the "maggots" who backed Obama, specifically calling out non-white voters, whom he accused of voting for the president on an "ethnic basis."

Bud Kennedy of the Star-Telegram has more details.

Republican officials in Texas have been glum about the concept of a second Obama term in the past. A judge from Lubbock predicted over the summer that the president's reelection could even lead to a civil war.

Obama's victory has been weighing heavily on some conservative groups around the country. The Cincinnati Tea Party proclaimed the nation dead earlier this week, ruling it a death by suicide.
Wait a minute, did this judge from Lubbock say this

If someone really feels aligned with "the left" they shouldn't keep trying to "correct" the current state of "the right" or of Fox News, from a strategic standpoint.

    They should encourage it.

It's like endorsing a failing strategy for your opponent. They should want to see it continue, like Jerry Jones being GM for the Cowboys.

Heck, I've got friends who believe that once all of the votes are counted that Romney will win the popular vote, all because they believed the Fox News numbers which were (as Dick Morris said) based on 2004 turn-out rather than the 2008 turn-out because they didn't want to believe that the electorate had changed so quickly. And in one night we see ever so clearly what i looks like when the walls of the echo chamber collapse under the weight of reality.
Indeed a beautiful moment. If you haven't seen The Daily Show from 11/7, do yourself a favor and go watch it on Comedy Central. Jon Stewart with some of his best work.

    Santorum Claims Homosexuals Stole Election

Former Pennsylvania Senator and GOP Presidential candidate Rick Santorum has claimed that a 'homosexual cabal' stole Tuesday's presidential election.

The conservative catholic politician told CNN this morning that something about the official numbers "just didn't add up" and was forced to draw the only obvious conclusion:

"I see the hand of the homosexual in this massive election fraud," Santorum explained, "Romney was tied or leading in most polls before the election. And then he loses?... Homosexual dirty tricks. It's is the only explanation that makes sense."
The scary thing is that for a moment I thought this story was true. Nothing Santorum would do would surprise me anymore.
