In Comments About His Wife’s Horse, Romney Shows Why Americans Just Don’t Like Him
July 26, 2012*| Posted by*Nick Chiles*
For those Republicans who simply can’t understand why the public has failed to embrace Mitt Romney and why President Obama continues to enjoy much higher likability ratings, I offer to you exhibit A: Romney’s answer on NBC when asked about his wife’s horse competing in the Olympics.
Rather than talking about the family being proud or excited about this special moment, the Republican presidential challenger instead threw his wife Ann under the bus and pretended he barely knew anything about her horse—whose name is Rafalca, by the way—and its big Olympic moment.
“I have to tell you, this is Ann’s sport,” he said, preferring to not even say the word “dressage”—which is a French word meaning “training” and sometimes described as horse ballet.
"I’m not even sure which day the sport goes on,” Romney said. “She will get the chance to see it; I will not be watching the event. I hope her horse does well.”
So let me get this straight—your family has invested probably millions in dancing horses, supposedly as a way to help Ann treat her multiple sclerosis, “her horse” is going to compete in the globe’s most prestigious event, and we’re supposed to believe you don’t know anything about it? The subject never came up at the family dinner table or in the marital bedroom? Really, Mitt?
And even worse, if we accept that Rafalca the horse is completely Ann’s deal and Mitt knows nothing about it, the guy isn’t even interested in going to watch his wife’s horse compete at an Olympics he’s already going to be attending?
Clearly he’s afraid that if the public sees him at a horse dancing competition, we will suddenly be reminded:*Oh yeah, Mitt’s rich—I almost forgot until I saw him at the Olympic dressage event!
The Romney campaign doesn’t seem to understand a fundamental fact about the American electorate: Americans don’t hate rich guys, Americans hate liars. Rich guys trying to pretend they aren’t rich, acting like they are the same as the rest of us. That’s being fake, a fraud, and we can spot it from a mile away. We don’t want the existence of your money thrown in our face, but if we don’t see it we’re not going to forget it’s there.
Take a look at the American Senate. Nothing but rich guys. A fraternity that provides definitive proof that Americans vote for rich guys all the time. In fact, I would contend that we actually PREFER to vote for rich guys. This is a nation that tends to lionize the very wealthy—Steve Jobs, Bill Gates, Donald Trump, P Diddy—believing that they must have some special stuff the rest of us mere mortals don’t have.
Let’s take a look at New York City, for example. For seemingly like the last two decades, one of the most liberal cities in the nation has been run by an incredibly rich guy, Michael Bloomberg. In fact, Mitt, he’s even richer than you. A lot richer. But the thing about Bloomberg, one of the reasons New Yorkers keep electing him again and again, is he’s comfortable being rich. He doesn’t seem to mind if you know that he happens to be a billionaire. He doesn’t try to hide it—like some people I know. If Bloomberg wants to spend his leisure time at the Metropolitan Opera or the New York City Ballet, he’s gonna go to the opera and ballet. He’s not going to pretend he’d rather be at a Knicks game—you know, like regular guys.
Something tells me that if Romney were mayor of New York, he’d sneak into the opera wearing a fake nose and a mustache—while the next day we’d see him front and center at the Rangers hockey game, clutching a beer he doesn’t really want to drink.

Co-worker told me that he once saw some movie (I forget which one), which had a scene in which a child is playing with a spin-and-speak (or whatever those toys were called.)
This was a device where a child would turn a knob, to point at one of several directions. He then pulls a string, and the machine would utter some phrase related to the object pointed at. The first one featured a dozen or so animals, and if the child, say, pointed the knob at the cow, and pulled the string, the toy would say "The cow says [cow noise]"He said that in this movie scene, a kid is playing with such a toy, and, at one point during the scene, the toy says "The politician says 'I don't recall'."
Its something like the wet feet dry feet law, theory, or something. I was listening to a show where they were discussing it. Cubans came over as political dissidents w/ full legal status. In Miami to be Cuban is to be at the top of the food chain. Which is also why the majority of Cubans vote Republican.

Romney says Jerusalem is capital of Israel, pledges to stand with ally in Middle East
By Associated Press, Updated: Sunday, July 29, 12:46 PM
JERUSALEM — Mitt Romney is calling Jerusalem “the capital of Israel” and is pledging to stand with the U.S. ally.
The U.S. presidential candidate says in a speech in Jerusalem that America must stand with Israel. The Republican says both countries believe in democracy, the rule of law and opposition to Iran becoming a nuclear power.
Romney also is calling Israel “the startup nation.”
Jerusalem is a flashpoint in the region. Both Israelis and Palestinians have claimed rights to the city.
Romney says the United States must be “unapologetic ambassadors” to push to advance the values that the United States and Israel share. Romney says the United States will always stand with Israel, including its insistence that Jerusalem be the cornerstone of Israel.

more from the link.Romney Not Sure If He’s Paid Less Than 13.9% in Taxes
JERUSALEM – Mitt Romney could not say today whether he had ever paid a tax rate lower than 13.9 percent, saying he would have to “go back and check.”
In an exclusive interview with ABC News’ David Muir to air tonight on World News, Romney was asked if there has ever been a year when he paid less than 13.9 percent, the rate he paid in 2010.
“I haven’t calculated that,” said Romney. “I’m happy to go back and look, but my view is I’ve paid all the taxes required by law.”
“From time to time I’ve been audited as it happens, I think, to other citizens as well, and the accounting firm which prepares my taxes has done a very thorough and complete job pay taxes as legally due,” said Romney. “I don’t pay more than are legally due.”
Pressed on whether he’d really go back and look for his tax rates as he suggested, Romney said, “I haven’t looked at the tax rate paid year by year.”
“I know that I pay a very substantial amount of taxes and every year since the beginning of my career so far as I can recall,” said Romney.
Frankly, I'm a lot more concerned with what I assume was an intentional pledge to recognize Jerusalem as Israel's capital, if elected, than I am by his inability to remember the precise percentage of income he pays as taxes, every year in his life.
He's rich- he leaves that to the accountant that told him how to hide his money in offshore accounts.

Well, looks like the Veep announce could be immediately after the olympics ends on Aug. 12 and not closer the start of the convention on 8/27.
It will be safe and boring pick.
I say it will be Rob Portman, though Tim Pawlenty could be the choice also.

Romney Praises Israel's Socialized Health Care System
No to ObamaCare, but Israel's mandate is working, Romney says.
Presumptive Republican nominee Mitt Romney offered praise for the Israeli health care system today — a medical plan that has been socialized since its founding in 1948.
Romney, who championed the Massachusetts health care mandate, but is an opponent of the federal mandate passed by President Barack Obama, marveled at how little Israel spends on health care relative to the United States.
“Do you realize what health care spending is as a percentage of the GDP in Israel? eight percent," Romney told donors at a fundraiser at the King David Hotel in Jerusalem, speaking of a health care system that is compulsory for Israelis and funded by the government. "You spend eight percent of GDP on health care. You're a pretty healthy nation. We spend 18% of our GDP on health care. Ten percentage points more. That gap, that 10 percent cost, compare that with the size of our military — our military which is four percent — four percent. Our gap with Israel is 10 points of GDP. We have to find ways — not just to provide health care to more people, but to find ways to find and manage our health care costs."
Romney has explained that he opposes ObamaCare because what worked in Massachusetts may not work for other states. Highlighting the success of the Israeli system — in a country that enjoys one of the highest life expectancy rates in the world — could complicate matters for Romney at home

ROMNEY COMMENTS AT FUNDRAISER OUTRAGE PALESTINIANS
- Mitt Romney told Jewish donors Monday that their culture is part of what has allowed them to be more economically successful than the Palestinians, outraging Palestinian leaders who suggested his comments were racist and out of touch with the realities of the Middle East. His campaign later said his remarks were mischaracterized.
"As you come here and you see the GDP per capita, for instance, in Israel which is about $21,000 dollars, and compare that with the GDP per capita just across the areas managed by the Palestinian Authority, which is more like $10,000 per capita, you notice such a dramatically stark difference in economic vitality," the Republican presidential candidate told about 40 wealthy donors who ate breakfast at the luxurious King David Hotel.
Romney said some economic histories have theorized that "culture makes all the difference."
"And as I come here and I look out over this city and consider the accomplishments of the people of this nation, I recognize the power of at least culture and a few other things," Romney said, citing an innovative business climate, the Jewish history of thriving in difficult circumstances and the "hand of providence." He said similar disparity exists between neighboring countries, like Mexico and the United States.
Romney, seated next to billionaire casino owner Sheldon Adelson at the head of the table, told donors at his fundraiser that he had read books and relied on his own business experience to understand why the difference is so great.
"It is a racist statement and this man doesn't realize that the Palestinian economy cannot reach its potential because there is an Israeli occupation," said Saeb Erekat, a senior aide to Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas.
"It seems to me this man lacks information, knowledge, vision and understanding of this region and its people," Erekat added. "He also lacks knowledge about the Israelis themselves. I have not heard any Israeli official speak about cultural superiority."
