    Pretty good commentary on "fact-checking"
There's at least one pretty good point, in there.

    Edit:

Specifically, the part about Ryan's "Obama cut Medicare" claim.

The fact checker's response was "Well, Ryan cut the same amount".

Which, as the article points out, does not in any way make Ryan's claim untrue. (It might make him a hypocrite. But it doesn't make the claim untrue.)

I saw that article earlier today and was not very persuaded by it, actually. The thing fact-checkers do best are give you both sides of the argument. Forget what the subjective "final report" is on the fact being checked, but fact checking sites tell you what both sides are claiming is true and not true, and then give you the factual background to make your own decisions. Of course, some do a better job of this than others, but I don't read any journalists who do half the job of explaining the background of issues as sites like politifact and factcheck.org.

Exclusive: Paul Ryan Quietly Requested Obamacare Cash

Republican vice-presidential candidate Paul Ryan is barnstorming the country, promising to repeal every provision of the Affordable Care Act if the Romney-Ryan ticket is elected. But a letter he wrote to the Obama administration may undermine this message.

On December 10, 2010, Ryan penned a letter to the Department of Health and Human Services to recommend a grant application for the Kenosha Community Health Center, Inc to develop a new facility in Racine, Wisconsin, an area within Ryan’s district. “The proposed new facility, the Belle City Neighborhood Health Center, will serve both the preventative and comprehensive primary healthcare needs of thousands of new patients of all ages who are currently without healthcare,” Ryan wrote.

The grant Ryan requested was funded directly by the Affordable Care Act, better known simply as healthcare reform or Obamacare.

The letter, among several obtained by The Nation and The Investigative Fund through a Freedom of Information Act request, is a stark reminder that even the most ardent opponents of Obamacare privately acknowledge many of the law’s benefits.

    Pretty good commentary on "fact-checking"
"Over the past few years, many organizations have promoted "fact checkers" by making them writers, or perhaps demoted writers by making them fact checkers. No, it's more the former, because other writers have been bowing to the "fact checkers" as submissively as Barack Obama upon meeting some anti-American dictator."

I am thinking the author may have an agenda.

At what point do conservatives question Paul Ryan's character or what he stands for? In the letter he hopes the clinic "will address the needs of Racine's low income and uninsured residents by offering access to medical, dental and mental health care." In other words, he believes Obamacare will do something positive for his own district.

This critique is as silly as Republicans asking "if you are for taxes going up, why aren't you sending extra money to the Treasury Mr. Democrat person"

People will play within the rules that are laid out.

There are many many more critiques I have of Paul Ryan, this is very low on my radar.

Not to be rude, but why is this even a concern. Paul Ryan was against Obamacare. Obamacare was passed. Paul Ryan tries to better his district using the newly passed law. If Dennis Byrd does this, he is a hero. If Paul Ryan does it, he is a liar. ****ing ridiculous the double standard used by BOTH sides.

Well I guess in a way that's worse than just not talking about anything Mitt Romney did at all while out and out lying about the other guy's record.

I agree. Ryan appears to be a big fat shameless liar on many things, but this is not one of them.

Predicto, I say this with all seriousness. I am almost DONE with politics. To the point neither a D nor an R will receive a vote from me the rest of my life (National & State level - local is a different story). I don't care if my vote is "wasted", my voice will say they are both ****heads.

Are the Republicans trying to confuse the writers at the Onion or make their lives super easy?
