    U.N. Assembly to vote on resolution condemning human rights violations in Syria

    Syria’s U.N. envoy slammed a draft U.N. resolution condemning the Syrian government’s eight-month crackdown on pro-democracy protesters, calling it a “declaration of war” on Damascus.

    Syrian Ambassador to the U.N. Bashar Jaafari was referring to a draft resolution on Syria which Germany submitted to the U.N. General Assembly’s 3rd Human Rights Committee, which is scheduled to be voted on at 1500 GMT on Tuesday. The draft, obtained by Al Arabiya, was crafted by Germany, Britain and France.

    “This has been tabled for the first time not with the aim of defending and bolstering human rights in Syria, rather this was in the context of declaring a political and media war on my country,” said Jaafari, speaking in Arabic.

Strongly condemns the continued grave and systematic human rights violations by the Syrian authorities, such as arbitrary executions, excessive use of force and the killing and persecution of protesters and human rights defenders, arbitrary detention, enforced disappearances, torture and ill-treatment of detainees, including children;

    2. Calls upon the Syrian authorities to immediately put an end to all human rights violations, to protect their population and to fully comply with their obligations under International Human Rights Law and calls for an immediate end to all violence in the Syrian Arab Republic;

    3. Calls upon the Syrian authorities to implement the League of Arab States’ Plan of Action in its entirety without further delay;

    4. Invites the Secretary General of the United Nations, in accordance with his functions, to provide support, if requested, for the League of Arab States’ observer mission in the Syrian Arab Republic, consistent with the League of Arab States’ decisions of 12 and 16 November 2011.

    5. Calls upon the Syrian authorities to comply with Human Rights Council resolutions S-16/1 and S-17/1, including by cooperating fully and effectively with the independent international commission of inquiry.

    I just noticed this part that comes before that:

    Expressing deep concern about the ongoing human rights violations and use of violence by the Syrian authorities against their population;

    Reaffirming that all States Members of the United Nations should refrain in their international relations from the threat or use of force against the territorial integrity or political independence of any State or in any other manner inconsistent with the purposes of the United Nations;

    Hezbollah may launch a military offensive to take over the Lebanese capital of Beirut if Syrian President Bashar Assad is forced out of power, Dubai-based Arabic-language news website Al Arabiya reported Tuesday according to a "source close to Hezbollah."

    According to the source, who spoke on condition of anonymity, despite an air of confidence in broadcasts from Hezbollah's Secretary-General Sayyed Hassan Nasrallah, officials behind closed doors have begun to worry about the potential fallout that may result following the collapse of the Syrian regime, especially given the alliance between Hezbollah, Syria and Iran.

    Middle East is way more complicated than Shia Sunni divide, any turmoil allows the regional players to have carve out a piece

    Sorry but you are quoting one of the least reliable sources on anything in the Middle East (and no not jpost although they are really bad). Al Arabiya is literally a Saudi Arabian propaganda outfit, they have absolutely no credibility and have a very clear agenda. Hezbollah is very secretive about what they plan to do outside their inner circle so this is total bull****.

    European Union governments plan to adopt a wide range of financial sanctions against Syria next week, targeting President Bashar al-Assad's ability to access cash through the banking sector, an EU diplomat said on Wednesday.

    The new measures are expected to include a ban on European investment in Syrian banks, trading in Syrian government bonds and on provision of insurance to state bodies.

    They are also expected to ban new loans to the government, bilaterally or through international financial institutions, prohibit trading of gold or other precious metals and bar sales of computer software used to monitor the Internet or telephone communications.

    The measures are also expected to prohibit Syrian banks from opening new branches in EU states, the diplomat said.

    "The goal is to target Assad's financial resources," the diplomat said, speaking on condition of anonymity.

    The leader of the main Syrian opposition group in exile said on Thursday that his organisation does not want to see defectors launch armed attacks on Bashar al-Assad's forces.

    Speaking after talks in Paris with the French government, Burhan Ghalioun of the Syrian National Council, said the fledgling Free Syrian Army should try to avoid direct confrontation with regime troops.

    "We would like this army to carry out defensive actions to protect those who have left the (regime's) army and peaceful demonstrations, but not take on offensive actions against the army," he said.

    In recent weeks there have been increasing reports that a rebel army has begun fighting Assad's regime in parallel to a largely peaceful street revolt that has faced brutal repression from regular forces.
    (That's pretty much what I've been saying...although I can see how the defectors might think it necessary to take out checkpoints to make it easier for people to get around safely.)

    France's foreign minister says he will seek EU backing for humanitarian corridors or other help for Syria, amid a deadly government crackdown on opposition protesters.

    Foreign Minister Alain Juppe gave strong backing to the opposition Syrian National Council at a meeting in Paris on Wednesday with its leader, Burhan Ghalioun. Juppe called the council France's "legitimate interlocutor'' amid the scattered Syrian opposition groups.

    Juppe said he would ask EU partners to consider "humanitarian operations to alleviate the suffering of the population,'' suggesting humanitarian corridors or zones. He did not elaborate.
    Not sure if that is specifically what he said or if that is how they are interpreting it.

    AMMAN/PARIS — France called on Wednesday for a "securitized zone to protect civilians" in Syria, the first time a major Western power has suggested international intervention on the ground in the eight-month uprising against President Bashar al-Assad.

    Foreign Minister Alain Juppe also described Syria's exiled opposition National Council as "the legitimate partner with which we want to work," the biggest international endorsement yet for a nascent opposition body that seeks Assad's overthrow.

    Asked at a news conference after meeting the SNC president if a humanitarian corridor was an option for Syria, Juppe said: "It is a point which we have examined and I will propose putting it on the agenda of the next European Council.

    "If it is possible to have a humanitarian dimension for a securitized zone to protect civilians, that then is a question which has to be studied by the European Union on the one side and the Arab League on the other side," Juppe said.

    I would find it less objectionable than Al Arabiya, but my point was to take anything from Al Arabiya especially something about another group that they aren't too fond of with a grain of salt.

But probably the most damning evidence that the "western world" is about to do the unthinkable and invade Syria, and in the process force Iran to retaliate, is the weekly naval update from Stratfor, which always has some very interesting if always controversial view on geopolitics, where we find that for the first time in many months, CVN 77 George H.W. Bush has left its traditional theater of operations just off the Straits of Hormuz, a critical choke point, where it traditionally accompanies the Stennis, and has parked... right next to Syria.
