    Default Any Collectors on board?

I'm going to be starting a series of radio segments about investments and collections and am trying a database of topics and/or experts to explore.

So, anyone collect or know someone who collects anything interesting?

stamps, coins, action figures, pez dispencers, old video games, comics, furniture, prints, campaign buttons, etc.

Would love to learn about it and hear about some of your cooler treasures.

My dad and I collected coins and stamps growing up. I wouldn't get back into without learning how to properly grade coins and stamps myself.

I posted this in another thread, but my dad and I were victims of this guy, albeit not on the scale Tom Clancy and others were.

That sucks. I think one of the missions of the segments is to talk to people about how to collect and how to find treasures, but what you encountered can happen even to the best. Did you hear about the art forgery case in Germany where these guys had an ongoing operation for 10 years and stole tens of millions of dollars. Crazy stuff.

No I hadn't heard about that.

Unfortunately I think collecting is at an all time low right now.

I personally have witnessed booms in stamps, coins, beer cans, comic books...they all collapse hard when they collapse. And once the collapse they never seem to come back. It's weird.

That's one of those hard questions... I know in the stock market that the down times are some of the best times to buy. Then again, trying to catch the falling knife is dangerous. I collect comics back in the 90's and made some very nice money doing that for a time, then I faded out of it and I heard the entire business of comic collecting also took a hit. I wonder if it's come back because of the movies.

Still, your probably right to a degree. Collections are about discretionary money unless you are talking about the very high end stuff and so, it is likely to be the first thing you stop doing if you have to tighten your belt.

I collected vintage beer cans (seriously). I have some sweet Iron City beer cans from the early and mid 70's which show the Pitts Steelers team picture. This is back when they were still made of tin. I don't know if the cans are worth anything because I've never checked.

A more serious collection I have is vintage Beatles memorabilia. I won't ever part with any of it but I'm fairly sure it's worth some decent coin.

I collect knives, ball cards, and guitars. Cards are almost worthless at this point, but I still love them. My crown jewel of all my collections is a tie between a 1977 Gretsch "White Falcon" and a WWII survival knife that was carried by my great uncle (who was a medal of honor recipient) Leonard F. Mason.

Baseball Cards. I have my dads collections from around 1946 through 1960, then my own from 1977 through today.

My 10 year old son is into as well.

I dont expect great fortunes, it's more about talking baseball with my dad and son.

But I do have some rare ones. Aaron and Mantle Rookie cards ie.

I used to collect cards: football, Marvel, DC, and some CCGs.
Oh, also comics, I have a ton in containers/boxes around here.
I don't really collect anything these days except maybe books and dust...although that isn't necessarily on purpose.

My dad collects O guage trains. Has a 1000sqft 'train room' that has some of his collection on display and a layout that is currently in it's infantcy. Not sure how much he has invested, but it is a pretty penny. After one of his friends from the club died they sold off his collection and it was upwards of $40,000. Not counting what the club members bought. We joke around it is a disease and he can't stop. He also runs the trains at the Botanical Gardens in DC at Christmas time and his club runs the large scale trains around the National Christmas tree.

When I was a kid I collected football cards. Tons of rookie stuff and HOF players. When I moved out I gave them all to my little brother.

Some of the stuff was worth money at the time and maybe still. To me it was personal as I think all collections should be.
My brother collected all kinds of random stuff.

My problem is that I hate clutter. Collections equal clutter most of the time. I just didn't get into it to that level. I have a nice Redskins jersey collection, but I don't really wear them. People try to buy me Redskins items as gifts, most of the time I just give them away to other Redskins fans. I have a chair in my garage that was given to me that I may never use.

This card at the time was the most valuable that I gave him :

I did the same thing. Beer can collecting was fun. "Old Froshingslosche!" i had three walls in the basement covered with over 1,000 different cans. I had 2 great cone tops. National Bo. I found them in an old abandoned house.

Now I metal detect. Best ever.

My brother collects those little army men. We used to love them as kids. We'd set up the Americans and Germans on two different sides of the room and throw a crayon at each others men it was great fun. He's taken it to new levels. He has a whole room set up for it. Giant tables with whole battle scenes. He doesn't knock them down anymore though. He builds elaborate scenes and takes pics of them and then builds a different one. His battle of the bulge scene is incredible.

    Not if they're Eagles fans.

I don't really collect anything all that great; mainly just Skins stuff, soda/beer cans, and 1/24 & 1/64 scale NASCAR diecasts.
