Thumbs Down Since Super Bowl XXVI

It has been 20 years since the Washington Redskins beat the Buffalo Bills Super 37-24 in Bowl XXVI with probably the best team in Redskins History.

On the night of January 26, 1992 we watched what was probably the Greatest Redskin Team ever hoist the Lombardi Trophy in a 37-24 win over the Buffalo Bills. It was the third Super Bowl win and probably the highest point in franchise history. We saw a team dominate to a 14-2 Record, with only one meaningful loss. In 1991 Redskins had the NFC East Title and Home Field wrapped up before any other NFC Team qualified for the playoffs. They never trailed once in the playoffs and Marc Rypien was never sacked. Rypien appeared coming into his own and becoming a QB that would lead the Redskins to many more glory days. Coach Gibbs was in elite company joining Chuck Knoll and Bill Walsh as the only coach to win more that 2 Super Bowls. The Redskins had more Super Bowl Titles then the Hated Cowboys.

This made me think how bad it has been for the for the Burgundy and Gold since that 1991 Season. Redskins Nation had no idea of the storm to follow…..
    • 4 Playoff Appearances (1992, 1999, 2005 & 2007)
    • 1 Divisional Title (1999) the other 3 appearances were as the #6 seed
    • 0 NFC Championship Games and Super Bowl Appearances (Every NFC Team except the Detroit who the Redskins Faced has made it to the NFC Title Game including the Carolia Panthers who did not exist and the Seattle Seahawks who were in the AFC in 1991).
    • 3 Playoff Wins (1992, 1999 & 2005)
    • 1 Home Playoff Game (1999)
    • 4 3-1 Starts without making the playoffs (1996, 2003, 2008 & 2011)
    • 1996 Missed the Playoffs after a 7-1 start
    • 2000 & 2008 Missed the Playoffs after 6-2 starts
    • 9 Head Coaches (counting Joe Jackson Gibbs twice)
    • 20 Starting Qbs
    • 6 Winning Seasons (including an 8-7-1 season in 1997)
    • No Record better than 10-6 (1999 & 2005)
    • 10 10 or more loss seasons

    Truly these are dark times.

May we draft a savior in 2012 named Robert Griffin III and return this franchise to glory.

Few teams that are great for a decade or so are able to sustain that going into the next span. The Steelers had a down swing, so did the 49ers, so did the Bills, so have the Cowturds, so have we obviously. NFL teams are like rollercoasters over the spans of decades. Some have more ups than downs, but all of them drop after being great and usually take a little time to swing back up (again, this is from the perspective of decades, so while Green Bay has been mostly good from Favre to Rodgers, there's a big downswing mostly between Starr and Favre).

I am hopeful that the ride is going to head upward soon.

I'm thankful that I am old enough to have some meaningful and poignant memories of that team.

At 11 years old, I rocked a Charles Mann jersey, relished watching Deion Sanders and those cocky Falcons get beat like a drum twice, and rooted for the Cowboys vs the Lions in the playoffs so we would see them in what surely would be an NFC championship classic.

I still have many games from that season recorded on VHS and pop them in periodically to remind myself what is was like to root for a winner.

    *Edit:
My dad swears that the '83 team was the best Redskins team ever until they got caught flat-footed vs the Raiders in SB XVIII.

Try being born two weeks before this particular SB. I turn 20 in 9 days... And yeah, that '83 team was pretty dominant up until Black Sunday. Kind of like the '07 Patriots were until 18-1.

Yeah, but, other than that, we're pretty good.

Don't expect a turnaround anytime soon.
The Packers are great because their president - Mark Murphy - was actually around in the glory days and knows how championships are built. He hired a brilliant up and coming GM FIRST (Ted Thompson), then let the GM pick a coach. This is how JKC did it, but I don't think Snyder has any clue how instrumental Beathard was in putting together the great Skins teams.
Don't believe the "Dan Snyder has Learned" b.s. Snyder is stuck in a sadly predictable pattern - he hires an uproven offensive coach, hoping to land the next Gibbs (Robiskie, Spurrier, Zorn). The coach flops and he gets lambasted by media and fans alike, at which point he hires an established coach (Schotferbrains, Gibbs, Shanny) and hands over complete control, at which point everyone exclaims "Oh Dan, he finally gets it." Whether it's Cerrato or Bruce Allen, the "GMs" of the Snyder era have been nothing more than capologists and lackeys, not qualified personnel guys, and only during the disastrous Cerrato-Zorn experiment was their ever a GM over Coach dynamic. Other than Parcells or Belichik, almost no coaches succeed handling both personnel and coaching. Shanahan inherited Elway, but has only a slightly better than average 55% w/l since Elway retired.

This isn't exactly news. We get to hear these statistics whenever anybody gets bored.

We all know the Skins have sucked for 20 years.

The Skins were not prepared for the salary cap era. Suddenly, we couldn't afford to trade our draft picks away and make up the difference in free agency. Suddenly, we couldn't afford starter-quality back ups at many positions.

Sadly, we kept running the team that way up until about 12 months ago. It only took 19 years but maybe we learned our lesson.

It's all about the draft and draft picks. If we suddenly decide it's trade our draft picks away time, we can reminiesce about how terrible we've been for 25 years in 2017.

This certainly is rivaling the 1942-1970 era of futility

If history repeats itself we have only one more decade left of this awfulness!
