Yeah, Middlebrooks has a lot to work on defensively. And he's obviosuly not the base stealer Trout is. But man does Middlebrooks have power...

That's what I like to see. Players like Trout, Harper, and Middlebrooks make you excited about the game all over again.
Four consecutive shutouts and sole first place in the NL West.
Not bad start to this latest homestand.

The Giants are rolling right now. If Lincecum can get going, watch out.
Well Timmy does have 12 consecutive scoreless innings..so I'm hoping he started his turnaround...

Felix Hernandez was simply nasty last night. You got the feeling that once he got ahead of hitters in the count, the at-bat was essentially over. I can't be mad about that game. Felix was outstanding, Morales pitched great. Man what'd I'd give to have Felix Hernandez on the Red Sox right now...
I remember reading somewhere(I think here on ES) that the Mariners won a meaningless game late in '08 that got them the 2nd worst record instead of the worst record, effectively costing them Stephen Strasberg.
Could you imagine Felix and Stras in the same rotation? Good god that would be nasty...

Alright, something that is really starting to annoy me. There is this new stat I'm constantly seeing during MLB broadcasts where a pitcher "batted against" average is revealed based on which pitch he is throwing (i.e. .258/fastball, .223/change-up, .249/curveball). My question is this: How do you calculate these averages if, for instance, you have a called strike, a swinging strike, or a foul ball? Is that considered an out? What about a ball? Is that considered a hit or what? If this stat is based on "balls in play," then it would totally elminate outs generated by strikeout.

My guess would be that it's when the ball is either hit, put in play for an out, or it is a strikeout pitch. But that is just a complete guess.

Wow. That's interesting.
But don't you think with the combined salary of Strasburg and King Felix, that Hernandez would have been moved for prospects not long after Strasburg came to town?
Just looked it up. In late September 08, teh Nats were at 59-99, and the M's were at 58-101. Both had three games remaining. The M's won their last 3, the Nats lost theirs. Final records were Nats 59-102, and M's 61-101. (nats must not have made up a postponed game or something). Gotta play the game the right way I guess.....

I would have agreed earlier in the season, but it's a tough situation right now. We're stuck with all these undesireable contracts, and we have all these minor leaguers/ young players up right now that are ready to take on the task of everyday big league play. I don't want to trade those guys away.
Yeah, I know what you are saying. It just sucks to throw away another season, which is what I think they are doing if they continue to go forward with the SP as it stands now. Although, I have been extremely impressed with Morales in his 3 stars thus far. Shame they couldn't pull out a win for him last night.
