Juan Castillo can suck it
"If Shanahan has a signature, it’s his faith in the young, seemingly undersized marginal, try-hard player, guys who have a hint of desperation, who play, as he puts it, “like every game is a playoff game.”
THE FIRST MEMBER of the NILES PAUL FAN CLUB unleash the beast
Haslett - 2nd in the division. Didn't have a lot to work with to start out, but he's been making huge strides. Our defense looked respectable last year. He's been able to successfully turn Rak and Kerrigan into OLBs. He's gotten rid of players who can't or won't fit in with the scheme, and along with Shanny has been finding gems throughout the draft. He's quietly turning our D into a respectable one again.
Ryan - 4th in the division. Just like his brother, lets his mouth write checks his defenses can't cash. He would do better to just shut up and work on improving his defense. Routinely does less with more than almost anyone else. Despite having some very good individual pieces to the puzzle, has yet to turn them into a solid defensive unit.
Fewell - 1st in the division. Almost the exact opposite of Ryan. His defenses aren't star-studded (aside from his DEs), and he consistently produces a solid unit. Riding the momentum created by Spags, but added his own wrinkles. I still think the 3 DE set on passing downs is ingenious. It gets favorable matchups for at least one of them.
Castillo - 3rd in the division. Still in over his head. I don't think he should have brought in the Wide 9, but his DL coach used it in Tennessee, so Castillo is going with what's familiar. I do give him credit for not scrapping it after a rough year though. He still doesn't have the personnel to run it. Needs to find some quality LBs in order to run it effectively. He's third because the defense stepped up over the last half of the season.
OLB Coach for the 3x State Champs: 2001, 2002, 2008 Atlantic Shores Seahawks2012 Final Record: 2-9
I agree, with a definite downgrade to Rob Ryan, that dude lives off of his brother's reputation alone. I also split Fewell's season in half, because it seemed like half the time they weren't very good and half they were unstoppable.
Mine go like this:
Jim Haslett B-
Rob Ryan F
Perry Fewell C 1/2 the time, B the rest
Juan Castillo can still suck it.
Fewell is solid and Haslett is decent. The other two are turrible.
"In 2012 the Redskins are gonna be the NFC East champions, and that starts right f–king today.” Kyle Shanahan, 1/1/12
I'd rank them this way:
Fewell
Haslett
Ryan
Castillo
I would agree that Rob Ryan is one of the most overrated coordinators in the league. If it wasn't for his dad and Rex, he probably wouldn't be a DC.
I wouldn't call Rob Ryan overrated so much as inexplicably employed. No one actually thinks he's good now and anyone who had followed his career ever had illusions of him being competent in Dallas. In fact, I'd be tempted to rank Ryan last. Castillo isn't good but at least he's a first year defensive coach who was forced to work with one of the worst linebacker corps ever assembled. What excuse does Ryan really have (besides being forced to work with Jerry)?
Haslett - Jigsaw
Rob Ryan - Beer and Cigarettes
Juan Castillo - Eric Estrada
Perry Fewell - Leonard Roberts
"It was like he was Jason on 'Friday the 13th' -- man just wouldn't go down," - Honolulu bar patron on Trent Williams being tasered and smashed over the head with a champagne bottle.
Alright NEWMAN.....
... ESPN has some writers that actually don't froth over the Cowboys.
http://espn.go.com/blog/nfceast/post...ffseason-needs
So far in our charting data (which is incomplete for a handful of teams), we've found 80 cornerbacks who were targeted in pass coverage 40 or more times last season. [COLOR="#ff00ff"]
Only 28 of those players had a success rate below 50 percent, and three of those players were on the Cowboys. Terence Newman was the worst of the bunch, ranking 72nd in success rate and last among those 80 cornerbacks in yards per play.
He goes on to explain that their historical comparisons to Newman indicate there's not much hope for a recovery, and concludes that it's time to move on. I agree. I'd say cornerback is the biggest need.
