Wall Street greed fueling high gas prices

ditor's note: Bernie Sanders is an independent senator from Vermont. He was elected to the U.S. Senate in 2006 after serving 16 years in the House of Representatives and is the longest-serving independent member of Congress in American history.
(CNN) -- Gas prices approaching $4 a gallon on average are causing severe economic pain for millions of Americans. Pump prices spiked 5% in the past month alone. Crude oil prices stood at $108 on Friday, up from only double digits at the beginning of the month.
What's the cause? Forget what you may have read about the laws of supply and demand. Oil and gas prices have almost nothing to do with economic fundamentals. According to the Energy Information Administration, the supply of oil and gasoline is higher today than it was three years ago, when the national average for a gallon of gasoline was just $1.90. Meanwhile, the demand for oil in the U.S. is at its lowest level since April of 1997.

    especially disturbing from that article.......

And investors are enamored with the idea of economic deliverance at the hands of Federal Reserve Chairman Ben Bernanke, via a new round of stimulus involving hundreds of billions more in cheap dollars. He will keep stocks rising. He will solve our intractable problems. It's a cult of personality. And it's a mistake.

It won't be the economic salvation investors expect; Bernanke's about to unleash a hellish inflation that will burn the economy for years. It'll be a slow burn that eats away at the average American's already-diminished living standards through pricier food, fuel and other necessities at a time of stagnant wages, depressed wealth and diminished savings.

Perhaps the biggest pain point: While oil prices rise on talk of Mideast conflict, action by Bernanke and the Fed could push oil prices past $200 a barrel, according to analysts from Bank of America Merrill Lynch. And that would translate to more than $7 a gallon at the pump, according to estimates by CIBC World Markets.

    How the Fed shapes inflation

It's time to stop the stimulus
I'm not a lone prophet on this. A growing chorus of Wall Street economists and academics is questioning the market's new monetary policy religion that economic fundamentals don't matter anymore, because liquidity -- cheap money -- trumps all.[COLOR="Gold"]

    funny story this morning.
my wife went to cumberland farms to get gas. she went in and gave the cashier 20 bucks for gas.
she went out and started pumping, after a minute or so she started thinking that she had the slowest pump in the world and then finally at 6 dollars and change it stopped.
so she looks up and notices that the decimal was off by one spot and they were only charging her 39 cents a gallon instead of 3.93.
so she went inside got her 14 dollars change and drove away,

she ended up getting 65 dollars worth of fuel for six bucks.

i still cant believe they didnt correct the problem and charge her accordingly but im really astonished they gave her change,

well after thinking about it, she did ask for twenty in fuel so they couldnt ask for more than that but im still surprised they gave her change.
and knowing my wife im real proud she actually had the stones to go in and ask for it.

One of the largest refineries in the world is on island and closing in a couple of weeks and these clowns still have not found another fuel source yet. Prices are starting to sniff at $5 a gallon and expected to soar over the summer, along with droughts. It sucks paying what the rest of the world pays.

When Errol Emrich drove by a Shell station in his San Jose neighborhood last weekend, regular gas was selling for $4.05 a gallon.
On Monday, it was $4.15. On Tuesday, $4.25. And this weekend? Analysts say it could reach a whopping $4.40.
Problems at California refineries have slashed supplies across the state, cutting fuel production and raising wholesale prices -- the price stations pay for their gasoline -- by as much as 73 cents, to levels not seen since 2007.
And that almost certainly will boost prices at the pump again soon.
"California gasoline prices may surge in the next five days, perhaps to levels higher than February's $4.33-a-gallon average," said Patrick DeHaan, an analyst with Gasbuddy.com. "It is within the realm of possibility that average prices reach near $4.40 or even higher if the situation worsens."
Bloomberg News reported that Exxon Mobil's 150,000-barrel-a-day Torrance refinery lost power Monday and may suffer production problems for another week.
That sent fuel wholesale prices surging 30 cents a gallon Monday in Southern California. Wholesale prices in the Bay Area, meanwhile, jumped 20 cents Monday.

He stopped at the gas station on the weekend, Monday, and Tuesday? Either Errol drives a lot of miles or he's only buying a little gas each day.
