Thread: Official 2012 Baltimore Orioles Thread

So here's a question to ponder: Should we cheer for the Angels today?

Now hear me out, I know the Angels getting swept today clinches a playoff spot for us. I get that, and I realize how important that is.

    But...

Right now, the O's have 91 wins. The Rangers, 1st in the AL, have 92 wins. An O's win today, coupled with a Rangers sweep, would leave the O's tied with the Rangers for the #1 playoff seed. How amazing would that be? Now I get that it would probably be better for us to get the #2 seed and play the ChiSox in the first round, rather than have to face the A's/Yankes wildcard winner, but still. How incredible would it be to cap this season off with the #1 spot?

Maybe I'm thinking too far ahead, and should just hope for the clinching spot today, but still, just a thought...

All this stuff makes my head spin. Many rolled their eyes with this 2 WC team thing, but it's been pretty intense!

I just want to remind people how awesome this article was from Game 162 (Contains NSFW Language): http://deadspin.com/robert-andino/

Check out the passage on the Red Sox. It's ****ing brilliant:

    ***
When you slip up, in the A.L. East, it's a long way down. I won't predict that Boston will be bad this year. But if there's one thing Orioles fans know, it's what dysfunctional ownership looks like. We saw Peter Angelos in the dark winter of 1997-98, firing manager Davey Johnson and accusing him of financial improprieties. One losing season later, Rafael Palmeiro and Roberto Alomar were gone, replaced by Will Clark and Delino DeShields.

So now here's John Henry, the prudent technocrat, stumbling around his yacht, dumping the manager and general manager who won him two World Series, declaring he never wanted that bum Carl Crawford in the first place. Here are anonymous sources saying the manager was a pillhead, the pitchers were lazy and drunk in the dugout. Maybe it will all be fine. But some things, money can't fix.

I have no problem cheering for the Angels today. The magic number is either Oriole wins or other team losses. So the Angles can beat the Rangers, and we'll just win today and tomorrow.

I thought it was silly but I've decided that I like it. It doesn't just let another team in the playoffs, it also makes winning division and winning the 1-seed more valuable since the wild card winner has to use up their best pitcher, and the 1-seed gets to play that team. So there are more teams competing for a spot in the playoffs late in the season, and even teams that have already clinched have incentives to fight for a better record. This makes for a lot more competitive games at the end of the season. (Not that I'm complaining about playing against a Red Sox team that has nothing to play for).

I had the same thought yesterday, but I concluded that if we win the division, we're actually better off as the 2 seed, thereby avoiding the Yankees/ALWest wild card winner and playing the AL Central winner in the ALDS. I want nothing to do with the AL West as long as we can avoid it.

Let's hope the RSox decide they don't want to see the Yanks celebrate in front of them! Lester and Buchholtz pitching in the series for em.

Why the **** do I care about baseball on a Sunday in September? What is this witchcraft that is compelling me to be on mlb.com during football? Answer: O's magic, baby!

Reynolds with another great catch at first. I swear he makes great stretches every game to get an out. Andino could've been a little more serious with that throw geez.

How close would you say Weiters is to being the best Catcher in the Majors?

I would say he IS the best, but I'm also a homer and don't watch much baseball outside of the O's (and the occasional Pirates game because of where I'm at). So clearly my opinion shouldn't be used for much.
