Four students shot at Ohio high school




[Updated 10:05 a.m. ET] Those wounded at Chardon High School in Ohio are students at another school in nearby Auburn, said Evan Erasmus, a student at Chardon. They had been waiting in the Chardon cafeteria for a bus to Auburn when they were shot, Erasmus said.

[Updated 9:53 a.m. ET] Four students were wounded when a gunman opened fire in the cafeteria of a suburban Cleveland high school just as the school day was beginning Monday, law enforcement officials said.

The suspected Chardon High School shooter - believed to be a student, according to a school official - was in custody, FBI Special Agent Scott Wilson told reporters.

Wilson declined to say how badly the injured students had been hurt.

"We just hope that they're OK," he said.

School administrators locked down schools in the city of Chardon, Ohio, about 30 miles east of Cleveland. and assured parents that all remaining students were safe.

CHARDON, Ohio (AP) — A gunman opened fire inside a high school's cafeteria at the start of the school day Monday, wounding four students, officials said. A suspect was in custody.

FBI agent Scott Wilson said there was one suspected shooter. He wouldn't discuss the extent of the students' injuries.

The shooting was reported around 7:30 a.m. at the 1,100-student Chardon High School about 30 miles east of Cleveland, said Civil Deputy Erin Knife of the Geauga County Sheriff's Office.

Television news footage showed anxious parents escorting children away from a school building, and ambulances could be seen outside.

"We don't have any status updates on the students," Chardon schools spokeswoman Ellen Ondrey told The Associated Press. "Our thoughts and prayers go out to them. We are very concerned."

A spokeswoman for Cleveland's MetroHealth System said a medical helicopter was dispatched to the high school. Angela Kiska, of the Cleveland Clinic, told WJW-TV in Cleveland that two of the victims were transported to Hillcrest Hospital.

Bob Herp, a Chardon trauma nurse, was at a command scene at a local Wal-Mart store where he told WEWS-TV helicopters were on the ground.

Ondrey said all classes in the district were cancelled.

[Updated 11:58 a.m. ET] A parent of children who attend Chardon High School says the gunman in today's shooting had specific targets and was not shooting randomly, according to a report from CNN affiliate WJW-TV.

[Updated 11:43 a.m. ET] The federal Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives says it has been given one handgun from the Ohio high school shooting scene to do an emergency trace.

The Geauga County sheriff's office is executing searches in the case with the assistance of ATF agents, a law enforcement official said.

The fact that the victims are students of another school does make this shooting not so random.

Coward. Anybody that can't handle their business without bring a weapon is a coward. I can't say that I know what prompted the person to do this, but I imagne it was some kind of revenge or the others did something to tick the person off.

That's why I said, I don't know the details and I'm just assuming. If that was the case that the one got beat by the 5, they are just as cowardous.

Local newspaper in Cleveland has gone ahead and identified the shooter. The kid's name according to Cleveland media is T.J. Lane. He's been identified by a couple of witnesses and apparently one of the victims has also id'ed this kid as the shooter. There are also disturbing photos that have surfaced that come from the supposed shooter at this link:

In one of the photos, it appears that the shooter has a sign up with the words of "massacre" and "Chardon" which was the name of the high school that suffered the shooting today.
