"John Wall will never be as good as Kyrie Irving was in his first week in the NBA" - David Falk, published February 14, 2013.
Nah, nah, you're good, sweetheart. Let it all out. But you are a homer. : )
And I hope no one takes me the wrong way or thinks that I want to go bang, bang, bang and replace every player with monopoly money. What I'm saying is that this franchise is in a unique position to continue being aggressive in terms of player personel decisions to bring a championship team to DC. The Gio Trade was serous business, the Werth signing was no accident. If this team was perfect the way it was, we would not be in the position we are in right now.
And even though this looks bad, the Cardinals are the defending world champions. And just like last year, they are a wild card team. St. Louis is an electric buzzsaw that knows how to win (which is another reason I'm scared of Detwiler starting tomorrow). Even if we lose tomorrow, it's not the end of the world. Nationals are like the Oklahoma City Thunder of baseball, and we have to open to the fact that at some point very soon, we may have players in this league that may want to come here for less money so they can win a championship.
I'll be the first to admit I didn't really get into baseball until right before Riggleman took over (though I remember watching Zimmerman's walkoff homerun in the first game in the new stadium). All I ask as a fan is to not take the pedal off the gas because these playoff teams are just as good as us, so we need to be better.

We don't know what we think, we don't know what we know. All we have to go on, is what we say and what we show...
There is nothing overwhelmingly wrong with the roster. Our approach at the plate needs work, and we could still use a true lead off hitter, but we don't need wholesale changes.
"In 2012 the Redskins are gonna be the NFC East champions, and that starts right f–king today.” Kyle Shanahan, 1/1/12
It's not about Berni's contract, it's the fact he's not an everyday starter and we can fill that position with someone who is. I'll give you Jackson, but you're still going around my point in that we have players that are starters that we can and probably should replace with better players. And I like Ross, but I don't feel he's going to develop into an elite talent like Stras, Gio, or Jordan. In which case I don't feel he should be protected as such, he's cool, but he's not elite enough to say that his job is definitely safe.
And we're going to have to disagree on Ramos because I feel he's going to take a minute to come back from that injury (and may never live up to that potential we traded for because of it). Look at the schedule again and look who we beat and lost to. Good AL teams like New York and Bmore pwned us. I like what we did against the Reds and SF, but teams like Philly, St. Louis, and Atlanta (good NL teams) really started getting into our *** the second half of the season (when games really start to matter). This team is set up nicely right now as a young above-average/elite pitching team with inconsistent average/above-average hitting. It showed during the regular season and it's showing now.

That is what I think. I watched the begiining of the game and in the first inning, it looked like they were just swinging for home runs. I admit that I don't know that much about baseball, but I don't think that is the approach that we should have took. Hindsight is 20/20, I know, but I am just saying how I feel.![]()
As far as next year goes, I wouldn't be surprised if things get shaken up.
Gone, but not forgotten... RIP RP
i dont like this attitude.
MLB seasons and postseasons are wildly unpredictable. Someone could get injured and it throws everything off.
The Mets were supposed to rule the NL East after they got to the '06 NLCS and lost in 7. They were young, had a good pitching staff, and some their stars were just entering their primes.
Fast Forward 6 years and they are a joke and have not made a postseason since then.
I agree
Every year is different. Look at the Redskins defense. The defense has become a weakness after it was a strength last year
It was pretty middle of the road, coming in around 15 in most categories.
This year the problem is injuries for the most part. We lost four starters by the fifth quarter of the season. Lou Spanos was also covering up for a lot of Haslett's unfamiliarity with the scheme. If we get healthy and hire a better coach this offseason, the defense will get back to middle of the road.
But anyway, regarding the Nats, this team is young. It's easy to lose track of that. Zim has years and years of high quality play left. Bryce is years and years away from his prime, when he'll probably be one of the best players of the era. Desi and Espi only have 3 and 2 years respectively. Ramos was only in his second year. Jordan, Gio, and Stras are all young and Gio and Jordan haven't hit their prime years yet. And the pipeline is still looking good, loaded with power arm starters like Giolito, Meyer, and Purke. Plus we've got some nice position guys like Goodwin and Rendon.
Really the only older parts of our core are Werth and LaRoche and maybe Morse. Werth has the kind of game and body that will age well and LaRoche could probably play first base forever if we needed him to. Regardless, neither are the most essential parts of our core.
We got two once in a generation talents in back to back years who are still babies, and are already kicking some tail in the majors. Not even those Mariners teams from the 90's were this loaded up IMO. This team is built to contend for a very long time.

Plain and simple, the Mets didn't have anywhere close to our level of talent.
You have to go back to the Ken Griffey/ARod/Big Unit Mariners to start finding an analogous level of talent.
In three years I see this club being even better than they are now. Easily. Not only will Stras and Harper be superstars by that time, the other young guys like Jordan, Storen, Ramos, Desi, and Espi will probably be better too. Goodwin and Rendon will probably be in the lineup by then, and we'll probably be stronger defensively and offensively because of it. If we can keep the bench in tact, we'll be better.
We've got more talent than the Phillies had in their core over their six or seven year run of the Manuel/Utley era where they won the division five times. I expect our window to last at least that long.

I feel it's also worth pointing out that Bryce had a 5 WAR season as a 19 year old rookie. Take a moment and let that fully sink in. This kid is going to be one of the all time greats. We don't need to go out and chase after some big name star, because he is going to be our star. Kid could be the next Mantle.

For some perspective, Bryce just turned in the greatest 19 year old season for a hitter in the history of baseball. He had 4.9 WAR on fangraphs and 5.0 on BR.
Mel Ott's 19 year old season in 1928 was his third in the bigs, his first full season as an everyday player. His is the second best teenaged season for a hitter with a fangraphs WAR of4.6, 3.7 on BR.
Ty Cobb's 19 year old season was his second in the bigs, first as an everyday palyer. That year was the third best all time for a teenaged hitter, WAR at 3.1 on fangraphs and 2.3 on BR
So yeah, he's pretty special. He's already one of the best defensive CFers in the NL, a great base runner, and his potential at the plate is basically limitless. He's first or second in history for teenaged hitters in just about every offensive stat. We've got a historic talent on our hands, and are probably looking at the greatest athlete DC has ever seen.

This series is not over.
From my understanding the Cards have to win 3 games. They only have 2 games won thus far.
If we can get 1 damn hit with runners on and swing the momentum back we can take it to the Cards. Morse today killed 2 potentially big rallies by himself. What was aggravating was Ian Desmond would come up the next inning, and lead off with a base hit or double.
1 hit. Get 1 lead. Today was great as the park was packed early. People were juiced. But quickly the air was let out as it was 4-0 in the 2nd yet fans stayed as long as possible till it was very obvious in the 8th the game was over

The hotter the heat, the harder the steel, no pressure no diamonds, we compete, we win
We are the next decade of the Washington Redskins
another great example. That trio only made two playoffs together.
Davey Johnson's Mets only made 2 postseason appearances. (I know, not a lot of postseason spots)
Look at the Devil Rays, in 2008 they looked like a core that would be challenging the Yankees and Red Sox for years to come. Have they made the ALCS since 2008?
There are too many variables at hand. What if Strasburg messes up his elbow again? What if Gio falls off a cliff next year? What if Bryce doesnt make the jump next year that we all expect (sort of like Espinosa this year)? What if Rendon cant stay healthy as has been the case with him so far? And the biggest variable, what if Davey Johnson cant manage after next season?
This is not a video game or fantasy sports, life happens and can get in the way. You have to take advantage of these seasons while they are in front of you. This is especially true in baseball where its so wildly unpredictable. Most of us thought next year would be the year for us, not this year and look what happened.
another thing i notice is that this team wants to score quick and with the HR swing. This team has completely lost its ability to play small ball.
Why is everyone so eager to get to the off season? We haven't been eliminated yet...
