Not sure who said it on MASN, but they were talking about the shut down and said something to the effect, "They will certainly still get to the playoffs, but a deep run and the World Series is effectively out of the question." How seriously does not having Strasburg in the rotation hurt their chances to make it to the World Series? Is this whole thing being overblown by the talking heads? I mean teams with lesser bullpens have won titles.

It'll hurt our chances for sure but even without Stras I'd say we'd have the best rotation of any playoff team. At worst we'd be just below the Giants with Cain and Bumgarner who are probably on par with Gio and J-Zimm(Lincecum isn't as good as he used to be). And our lineup and pen are much better than the Giants, plus we own them head to head.

When you factor in both the lineup and the pitching staff without Stras, we'd still have the best overall team in the NL. But the gap decreases when you're basically replacing him with Detwiler in the playoff rotation(only need 3-4 guys tops in the playoffs).

yeah, im concerned a bit about it too. Detwiler scares me because he always struggles 2nd time around the batting order (today notwithstanding)

Boswell has a good article about the Nationals pitching staff today without Strasburg.

Detwiler will dominate any lefty lineup at least. We know that.

He was pretty damn dominate yesterday. Yeah, it was the Cubs, but he was throwing some heat for 7 innings. It was really good to see him go with his fastball most of the time.

The Phillies swept us in Philly, and we split in Miami. Took 3 out of 4 at home from the Cards, and won the first game of 4 with the Cubs.

Meanwhile, Atlanta split 4 @Giants, lost 2 out of 3 @Padres, and lost 2 out of 3 @Phillies. Won game 1 of a 4 game set with the Rockies.

Net is we have gained .5 games since the Atlanta series, even with a 5 game losing streak. Magic number now down to 22 (any combination of Nats Ws and Braves Ls).

question: the sports junkies are saying the nats just a winning record and just got to.500. havent they been having a winning record all summer? wouldnt 75 wins be considered a winning record too?

they are saying that the nats will have a better record than 500 this year even if they lose the rest of the games

Just clinched a winning record. Meaning even if they lost every game for the rest of the season, they'd still finish 82-80 and over .500 for the year. Thankfully, that won't happen, but that's what they were talking about, the first guaranteed winning season for the Nats.

Season is 162 games. Nats are at 82 wins.

Guarantees the first winning season in 43 years (yeah, some of us even remember when that happened).

I wonder what we do with Lannan until Stras gets shut down. I can't imagine sitting him on his ass for two weeks and then having him pitch. I wouldn't be against having him take Zimmermann's spot in the rotation for a start or two as JZ looks like he could use some rest, he's never pitched this many innings and I think he could be fatiguing a bit.
