Hey, nobody is rooting more for Cooley to see out his career here nor is hoping the OP/ thread is woefully premature than me.

It's just with all the growing talk from those that follow the team closely on a daily basis that all signs are pointing to him not being back this coming season, I felt the urge to pay tribute to one of our modern greats.

Maybe it is out of place whilst he's still here to pre-empt something that may or may not happen (even if I did emphasis the 'IF it's the end' factor in the OP), although I guess that's down to the individual as many seem happy to be able to acknowledge all he's done for this team and community here; but rest assured regardless I'm hoping like Hell the thread is soon redundant and Captain Chaos leaves me and this thread with egg all over my face.

    Hail.

I hope you can bump this thread a few years from now and add a lot more to his achievements as a Redskin.

    You and me too man.

For one he's less than 800 yards shy of the receiving yardage mark for a TE here, from 5 season's and 40 odd games less than the guy he's chasing.

To see him finish his career anywhere else but here, bar maybe the chance to go to his boyhood team in Denver if both party's agreed; would be a crying shame and would sadden far more 'Skins fans than you and I.

    Hail.

Saw some stats that RG3 has actually punted 3 or 4 times in his career for about 33 yards per punt. Looks like that's why we're drafting him, to secure the backup punter position so we can let Cooley go. It all makes sense now.
Eli Manning will be 31 years old when the 2012 season starts.
Michael Vick will be 32 years old when the 2012 season starts.
Tony Romo will be 32 years old when the 2012 season starts.
ROBERT GRIFFIN III will be 22 years old when the 2012 season starts.

um... yes.. but some info that sounded pretty solid.

Jsteelz has hinted pretty strongly that he's still not healthy, despite what Cooley has said.

I think if Cooley shows up truly healthy and is willing to re-work his contract, he can remain. But if either of those things aren't true, i believe he'll be gone.

Soon as we get our salary cap money back from those thief's in the NFL we will have space to keep Cooley.

Is he tradeable, would we get anything in return?

Cooley's definitely not tradeable if he's not healthy.

And our insiders have intimated that he isn't.

It's not so much a question of money as weighing his salary up against his health and effectiveness for what the Shanahan's want to do. And by all accounts they don't think he's upto the task anymore on both fronts,

I haven't heard that Cooley's not healthy. Is that the word? Then again, I haven't heard anything about his health either way. I'd like to keep him around, and I think Cooley would really prefer to stick around and that he'd take a restructuring or a paycut to make it happen.

IN the past couple years, I was in favor of trying to trade him for something while we could sell high on him -- before Davis broke out and before Cooley started to really decline. That obviously didn't happen and it may have been impossible with his contract. But now I think the time has come where we should try to keep him around, if he restructures. For one, I think Cooley is going to be motivated coming off last season, when possibly he wasn't in great shape post-lockout. He sees the writing on the wall and I think he knows he has something to prove. Cooley's always a security blanket for QB (especially with rookie RG3 coming in) and he's a weapon who can move the chains. Toss on the uncertainty surrounding Fred Davis, and I think trying to keep Cooley around makes all the more sense.

I just would be surprised if Cooley doesn't restructure or make a real effort to stick around.

I keep hearing about the uncertainty with Davis, but one could really argue there is just as much uncertainty with Cooley. Is it more likely Davis is going to fail another drug test or Cooley gets hurt again? Considering age, salary cap, and over all health I would say Cooley at this point is the bigger risk. If Paul actually does well at the TE spot, then the older slower Cooley will be gone. 3rd string te's have to play special teams not sure Cooley has that in him.

I remember watching one of Cooley's final games in college. They were talking about all the TE records he had broken, and I was shocked/excited when we ended up drafting him in the third round. He was a favorite of mine from early on just because the one time I'd saw him in college, he was getting so much praise. That draft was probably the most excited I've ever been with our top 2 picks. If this is the end, I'll be sad to see Cooley go. After he officially retires from the game, I'm sure he'll come back to the area in some capacity. There's just way too much love for him here for him not to.

Sean you were one hell of a safety and an even greater role model for young men like myself. You played my position with the same reckless abandone I play it with. More importantly, you WEREN'T perfect and you MADE mistakes, a lot like me, and you were growing and maturing into a man, a lot like what I'm trying to do. And the fact that you're gone now only motivates me more, as a safety and as a young man, to carry on your legacy.

Given the fact that the only way he's not in a Redskins uniform this fall would mean he is not worth about 1.3 to us, I don't see someone else wanting to pay 3.8M.

That he is not healthy is one of the only two reason he hasn't restructured yet (the other being that we don't want to restructure him uless we have no other choice). Given the FACT that almost all restructures pay the given player more, we'd probably be increasing his non-cash 2013 cap hit in the face of a CASH floor while handicapping us from making a move if we have a better option come fall (a restructure would all but guarantee him a roster spot this fall) .
A bad plan well executed may work. A good plan badly executed will always fail.

I just hope he is healthy, because if he is having him and Davis will just make life for RG3 so much easier. Of course if he is not healthy then bye bye.
