Default msnbc - Agenda 21: Arizona close to passing anti-UN-sustainability bill

    http://usnews.msnbc.msn.com/_news/20...inability-bill

Arizona lawmakers appear close to sending to Gov. Jan Brewer a tea party-backed bill that proponents say would stop a United Nations takeover conspiracy but that critics claim could end state and cities’ pollution-fighting efforts and even dismantle the state unemployment office.

A final legislative vote is expected Monday on a bill that would outlaw government support of any of the 27 principles contained in the 1992 United Nations Rio Declaration on Environment and Development, also sometimes referred to as Agenda 21.
About the Rio declaration, SB1507 says “the United Nations has enlisted the support of numerous independent, shadow organizations to surreptitiously implement this agenda around the world.”

Rep. Terri Proud, R-Tucson, told supporters in an email that the U.N. declaration “will take away our rights as Americans by allowing the United Nations to mandate laws on our soil,” the AzCapitolTimes.com reported. “It’s very real and it is happening.”

The Times also reported that during House debate Wednesday, Rep. Jack Harper, R-Surprise, said the declaration is connected to the “occult” of sustainability.

"The tea party and conspiracy theorists run the state now, Campbell told msnbc.com.
The stupidity of the tea party is beyond comprehension.

I deal with the TP "Agenda 21" morons all the time.

The idea they have that sustainable development is somehow the grand plan of the United Nations and that our states are being slaved out to UN policy is both laughable and sad.

But this is what happens when the geriatic population (and I realize that not all TPers are geriatric - they just think like them) becomes disenfranchised from the GOP.

I'm not the least bit surprised. The GOP of late is like a family reunion where the crazy uncle (the Tea Party) is reminding everyone that he is crazy and the sane family members are averting their eyes and keeping their mouths shut to avoid a family squabble.

So, Arizona is opposed to sustainability?

A state whose probably greatest natural resource is solar power, is going to pass a law mandating that the state will not in any way permit anything associated with sustainability?

Arizona and Florida have convinced me that states' rights must be constrained

Well with Scalia about to opine that Arizona is a sovereign "state" that can do whatever it wants, why wouldn't they start ignoring international treaties made on the federal level?

    Already been done.

Alberto Gonzales, attorney for Governor W, has already argued before the Supreme Court that US Treaties do not apply to Texas, because Texas didn't sign them.

Actually it's not stupidity which is driving their dramatic irrational activities. It's FUD, fear, uncertainty, and doubt about the changing world; coupled by their intelligence to be informed about what's going on, and of coarse this intelligence being dominated by their mistrust of all of sources, (the people, organizations, papers, magazines, and periodicals) which would inform their opinions.

I have a really good buddy from college who is like this. He's one of the smartest guys I know and also a complete idiot. His education is specific and tought him skills, but not how to reason.

Anyway a few years ago just after the Rodney King riots he was driving his car in the expanse of open territory in west Texas and New Mexico and he passed a convoy of humvee's with UN designations... Hundreds of vehicals. He came back and reported to me that the UN had a secret army in New Mexico which was planning to suspend the constitution and invade our cities like LA; in a UN take over of the US...

When I pointed out that the UN has no standing army, and can't really field a significant force capable of defending itself without US logistical support and likely US direct participation.. That what he likely saw was US troups going out on some exersize who's US troups were painted with UN designations. I would point to NY Times, Washington Post, Washington Times, LA Times etc sources to support my argument... Coarse he didn't trust any of those sources... instead relying on the New Republic, which is tanamount to hear say.

man it is so depressing that the simple, objectively good idea of managing our resources responsibly has been demonized by the party that ideologically ought to be the ones in favor of preserving them. is there really nothing more to the conservative impulse in america today than fear of outsiders?

Well, face it. It started with the idea that pollution controls were bad for corporate profits.
