Thread: Welcome to the Redskins Kirk Cousins QB Michigan State

This is Bill Polian on Kirk Cousins
"Well, I've seen a lot of him, and I think he has all the tools physically to be a really good quarterback. I don't have any doubt that he'll be successful. "
    Polian and Parcellls draft board.

"To me it’s an insurance policy that you develop," Mayock said. "And if he puts the baseball cap on for four years, and never gets to the field, that’s great. However, year three, if (Griffin) goes down — and he’s gonna take a lot of hits, RGIII’s gonna take a lot of hits — if he goes down year three, you’ve got a developed quarterback behind him ready to go. ... There’s no greater depth need for me on any team than the backup quarterback."

Patriots have alwaya drafted a backup, Brady, Cassle, Mallet. You need someone that won't be Curtis Painter. End of story.

Criticism of Redskins' Kirk Cousins pick misplaced

    http://www.nfl.com/news/story/09000d...content_stream

Three days of non-stop draft coverage has caused the football world to collectively lose its mind. That's the only explanation for all the criticism the Redskins have taken for drafting Kirk Cousins with the No. 102 pick of the draft round.

To hear most analysts tell it, fourth-round picks are absolute gold that should never be used on backups. Forget for a moment that the fourth round is intended for backup players and there is no more valuable backup position than quarterback. Forget that most people couldn't name five fourth-round picks and that most of the round's picks won't make a big impact.

Good pull, Coolio. An injection of Common Sense is definitely needed on this pick.

Mayock has a great point. If you draft a guard in the 1st round then go back and draft another guard in the 4th then what is the big deal. You need depth for every position, period. In fact I've noticed that Mayock has liked a lot of our picks this year which reassures me considering I feel he is a better evaluator then kiper/mcshay. Like Mayock says - any kind of controversy with this pick is strictly media driven.

On a side note anyone notice at the end of Grudens Camp how he talks about maybe coaching Cousins one day and how hes really rooting for him. Seemed like Gruden was real sincere and I think he likes the kid. Who knows maybe it's him that offers us draft picks for Cousins in the future

QB is also the only position in football besides kicker/punter where there is only one guy that will play the whole game. It is not the same as drafting two guards. Two guards play every down and in long drawn out games, OL can sometimes substitute to get a breather. That doesn't happen at the QB position.

You do need depth at every position and I'm completely fine with Grossman as a BACKUP. This team could have used developmental players at many other positions than backup of backup QB. And the controversy is not media driven IMO. A lot of people genuinely feel this was an ignorant pick. I hope RGIII and Cousins turn out good and maybe they can trade Cousins for a 1st or 2nd down the road. I doubt Cousin's value will ever get that high though.

See I think that Shanny likes our depth at other positions already, in fact he even mentions it in his presser. I believe that is where the disconnect with the fans occurs - fans are like "WTF we need more WR/RB/LB/SS/CB" but IMO I think Shanny is happy with the depth at those positions and probably didn't think anyone on the board in the 4th would out perform his current depth. They've stated Cousins was the 3rd QB on their board ahead of Weeden, Foles and Brock. Other "experts" say that Cousins is basically an Andy Dalton clone, I think I can risk a 4th round pick for the possibility of having someone like that as my backup. In fact I think it's funny that in essence we basically traded a slow-release Jason Campbell for a potential Matt Hasselbeck type backup in Cousins.

That said, I get it - people including myself initially were perplexed by the pick. Once the smoke has cleared however you realize if the value was there then we had to pounce on it. I mean if this move was made next year everyone would be like "good job shanny way to get value and a competent backup". If we drafted Tyler Wilson or Logan Thomas next year in the 4th round everyone would be calling it a steal. Fact of the matter is that people are mad at the pick mainly because they didn't see it coming. It wasn't a part of the "Redskins Plan" they had envisioned in their mind. Yes, Grossman would be a competent back up this year but hes on a one year contract. So 2-3 years down the line who is our backup? Beck? Crompton? a 52 year old Todd Collins?

I think this pick has some upside, and no greater downside than anyone else we could have selected in the 4th.
Here's why: from a future trading perspective, QB may be the only position in which values go up the less you see of a player. Guys who have very little playing experience can be in real demand and get you high draft picks in return. We just gave up a whole bunch of high draft picks for RGIII, and it might be nice to have a bargaining chip to get back a 3rd or 2nd in, say, 2013. Maybe a 2nd and Cousins gets us back into the first round in that draft. The fact that Cousins already has some name recognition and is well regarded by football people makes me optimistic about the possibility of getting back value. You wouldn't have that with a guy taken in round 6 or 7.

I like the Kirk Cousins signing for the sheer fact that it is obvious that Grossman will not be on the team past 2012 and we may be able to get something of value for him in a couple of years if we play our cards right. Most of the media is blowing this up as a QB competiting (yeah right) and Skip Bayless pulled out the race card (what an idiot). No one has mentioned that maybe, just maybe, the reason they decided to draft a 2nd round QB in the 4th round was the salary cap debacle. It would cost too much to sign a veteran that was decent enough to back up RG3, thus having someone who has been learning the system day one with RG3 is better and CHEAPER than signing a veteran.

    Thoughts?

Why is it that extremely intelligent football people (Mayock, Casserly, Polian) are being ignored on this subject. And Joe Gibbs believed in finding two guys to play quarterback as well. Yet people are giving credence to things Trent Dilfer is saying. *shrug*

Whatever floats your boat, I guess. I'll just stay on "Clueless Island" and continue to say I like the pick.

Just going to lock this one up in the interest of board clutter and saving folks from themselves. As I stated earlier, there's at least 2 other threads debating the pick so we'll just leave you all to those and maybe start a "Welcome" only thread a bit later.
