Not sure that my history is 100% accurate, but I remember Kelvin Bryant being great. Like Joe Washington. He could and did catch 40 yard over the shoulder passes and run like Joe Washington. But he was not reliable, always injured. I thought that was why he did not stay.

Grant Wistrom played DE for St. Louis in 2002.

It looks like Canidate had a decent year in 2001, did nothing in 2002, then the Skins picked him up in the 2003 offseason. Hard to believe we gave up a 4th round pick for the guy.

I remember most fans thinking Joe T's career was over after that hideous leg break. He was already far along in his career and frankly the team thought they had something in Jay Schroeder (sp?). Things sometimes work out in the longer run because Jay player well enough for us to trade him the hlthe Raiders for Jim Lachey who was an absolute stud. And Jay of course never panned out. Thanks Al Davis.

Taking the above, why do people still class Joe as a franchise QB by virtue of being the first Redskins QB to win a ring?
Even given the different game back them, he was an average to good at best QB. He might of had the duration, but we've not had a franchise caliber QB since Sonny IMHO.
Until now that is.
And the less said about Joe the Flake post playing career the better.
Never have gotten the love for Joe. I respect him and what he did as a player here. But nothing else personally speaking.
Hail.

I lived in Silver Spring, MD from 74 - 94 and my brother and I were good friends with a local police officer and would say hello and b.s. with him whenever we saw his cruiser.
Late one night in the 80's - maybe 85 or 86 (cant remember exactly) we were walking home from a movie and we saw his cruiser in downtown behind a car he had pulled over. We walked up and waited for him to finish to say hello... he was getting testy with the occupants and then Dexter Manley got out of the drivers side and walked over to the passenger side and got back in. The passenger (a woman) got behind the wheel and the car took off.
The cop came over and we asked if that was Dexter. He said yeah - and that he was wasted and he had coke powder on his nose. This was during one of Dexters suspensions - I dont think it was the year long one... the cop was a huge fan and said he didnt want to touch that crap with a ten foot pole and told Dexters girlfriend to get behind the wheel and drive him home.

I don't think any reasonable fan contends that Joe T was anywhere near an HOF caliber QB. The guy spent the early part of his career returning kicks afterall. He even changed the pronounciation of his name to sound like college football's top honor. If you recall how he acted in the afterglow of winning it all in 1983 he's far from likeable. It's always been a love/hate thing for me with him. I recall him posing for GQ all gussied up and thought what a douche he was for doing that at the time. Of course that's standard procedure now since the game has gotten so watered down.

Interesting. I think he was a very good QB for us for a pretty long time. He was reliable and durable (missed 8 games over the course of 8 years as our primary starter, with 5 of those being after LT destroyed his leg). During our run of 3 straight division championships (1982-1984) he put up very good numbers and was the NFL MVP in 1983.
I don't think he was elite (which might be all that you're arguing), but I think the term "franchise QB" in the 1980s simply meant that you were happy with your QB and not looking to replace him. We got very good QB play out of the same guy for almost a decade. I'm not sure I would minimize that.
I don't really care about his post-playing career...but he doesn't irritate me all that much. I actually didn't mind him on SNF, but agree that he's a bit over the top when just talking about the Redskins. He's almost better off having to discuss the league than his favorite team.
"Washington strolled to the NFC championship, outscoring their two playoff opponents by a combined total of 48 points. Their domination was more than impressive, it was historic. The 1991 Redskins boasted the largest average margin of victory among all Super Bowl champions."

My 12-year old son's right leg is 3 inches shorter than his left but he can run and roll out just fine. Theismann's problem was he couldn't throw -- even before the injury!I'm not suggesting my boy is running at an NFL level, just trying to add some levity.
Like others have said, he wasn't performing well that last year.

There should be a bonus to cap space for teams that KEEP players on the roster longer.
There is, kind-of.
If you sign a veteran player to a minimum contract (defined by how many years he's been with the team), then only about 85% of his salary counts against the cap.

The attraction to Canidate was SPEED. He was very, very fast (4.41 40 time)...couldn't block, or break tackles, but he was fast.
Since most of Spurrior's running plays were draws, Trung was actually a pretty good fit. He probably would have finished with just over 1000 yards in 2003 if he hadn't gotten injured and replaced by Rock Cartwright.

Yeah..Darrell Green was a rookie and not close to the HOF player he would become. Our best DB Jeris White held out that year in a contract dispute.
As for the Riggins/Rogers transition, Riggins publicly asked at the end of the season that Gibbs find somebody to help share the load. Dunno if that was just to save face because he saw the writing on the wall, but at least publicly he applauded bringing another guy in. He did become a bit embittered when he got released, though.

You left out RG lll who is now the best QB you've seen in your 42 years.

I didn't realize that Grimm was hurt so much towards the end of his career compared to Joe Jacoby. I'd love to be in the HOF voting committee room and hear some of the arguments against putting Big Joe in the Hall. Being on an offensive line that went to 4 SB's and won 3, with 3 different QB's is something that no player in the HOF today can say. The Hogs made Mark Rypien, Doug Williams and Theisman stars. Jacoby was the rock on that line. I miss hearing/seeing John Madden talk about Jacoby. He loved him.
Dave Butz was another guy that Madden loved who doesn't get the HOF consideration he deserves. Butz was a force at DT for the Skins. Nobody pushed big Butz around and he never got the recognition he deserved.
I would put Jacoby and Butz in the Hall over Grimm.
