Old Redskins questions I've always wondered about.......

Its interesting that in those pre internet days you kind of got news and information where you could get it - and it tended to be more local. Bear in mind I was in the UK - although I spent some time in the US in 85 and 86. Bryant was a star in the USFL - he was in their All Star team and had big stats and 1,000 yard plus seasons every year. He was on my radar screen because of that and also I recall watching a preseaon or early season broadcast when one of the announcers was saying he thought Bryant would have more impact on the NFL than Herschel Walker who was the big splash/steal the Cowboys had made from the USFL.

Gary Clark was more of an unkown to me - came from a small school but was clearly someone with talent. I did not know what to expect from him but don't recall the Post (which was my main source of Redskins news back then) being all that high on him or at least not hyping him

Anyone remember how we came to get Ricky Sanders here - he was drafted in that same supplemental draft by the Patriots in the 1st round according to the table I just looked at but wound up signing with us??

I was just a youngin back then but I remember my uncle being SUPER psyched that we got Kelvin Bryant.

What's the story with SB XVIII? The rumor I heard, was that part of the reason why we got spanked by the Raiders, was because some key players partied their butts off the night before the game. Any truth behind that, any good stories?

The way I understand it was that the alot of the Redskins went into the game over confident, maybe cocky. Also I heard that the league was mad at Cooke for some reason & put the Redskins in one of those crappy 3-story hotels near the airport. I remember Riggins on his radio show saying that the place had no security & that none of them could get any sleep because there were always fans around. They put the Raiders in one the nicest hotels in downtown Tampa with much better security. The league obviously had a double standard just because they were mad at the Redskins owner for some reason. Of course as bad as the score was in that game, it really came down to 2 key plays. The interception Theisman threw near the end of the 1st half & that run by Marcus Allen was the back breaker.

Kelvin Bryant for a couple of years was probably the best 3rd down/pass catching back that I had ever seen play.

With all the recent upsets in College Football, there have been a lot of court rushing. This made me wonder: has anyone on ExtremeSkins ever rushed the field at RFK or know someone that rushed the field at RFK? I know the fans did it after we won the NFCCG in '72 and '82. If you have: what was it like? Did the DCPD crack any skulls or was security kind of lax?

That offseason/draft was really interesting.. The skinz went receiver heavy. I remember them bringing in, Gary Clark, Ricky Sanders, Clarence Verdin and Derek Holloway.

I remember listening to Ken Beatrice of WMAL fame talking about all the offensive weapons the skinz brought in and he mentioned them trading a future draft pick for Sanders. So, I looked it up and sure enough found this:

"Prior to the 1984 NFL season, a USFL Supplemental Draft was held. Sanders was selected 16th overall in the first round by the New England Patriots. The Redskins were so intrigued by his performance in the USFL that they deemed him worthy of a 3rd round pick in the 1987 NFL Draft. The Redskins acquired the 23-year old's NFL rights from New England and signed him on August 11th, 1986."

So we gave up a 3rd round pick for him.. another classic Bobby Betherd move.

There used to be some great videos on Hulu and You Tube of the '71 season (called "Three Cheers for the Redskins") and Lombardi's '69 season, but I can't find them anymore.

Those were the years (from '73 on) that I became a Redskins fan, and can remember watching the playoff losses to the Vikings (73 and 76) and the Rams (74), but not a lot about the regular season games in those years. The 1975 season had some interesting games, from a thrilling OT win at RFK against the Cowboys to a heartbreaking road loss to the Cardinals where the Redskins got screwed on a Cardinals TD late in the game where the receiver (Mel Grey?) basically had the ball for a millisecond in the end zone before getting popped by Pat Fischer. The refs convened for a long time, called it a TD, and the game went to OT and the Skins lost. Also think the Vikings came into RFK undefeated fairly late in the season and the Skins beat them.

I guess early on in Allen's tenure here you had the first QB controversy with Sonny and Billy, although the two were good friends, and neither liked Theismann when he joined the team in '74. Of course Sonny was hurt a lot as well early on which allowed Allen to start Billy. Allen was more of a defensive-minded coach as well.

One interesting thing about the time was that the Cardinals were actually in the mix with the Skins and Cowboys for top dog in the division for a few years of that era. In fact, one thing I never knew was that the Cardinals, instead of the Cowboys, hosted the Thanksgiving game in 1975 and 1977. Its funny that Bruce Allen still refers to the team as the "St Louis Cardinals."

Lombardi brought respectability to perennial losers. They were losers in spite of having such a potent offense. The Skins took a major step backwards after Lombardi's death and reverted to mistake-prone football again (I remember the long snapper snapping the ball right out of the back of the endzone for safeties, more than once!) Another game I remember from that time was against the Giants, where we built up a lead of something like 31-7 and still wound up losing!

George Allen brought in discipline, defense and much more attention to special teams. But he traded away the future for veteran players. His famous quote was, "The future is now!" But I still credit Allen for turning the Skins around to the point that we fans actually expected wins on Sundays!

Nah. Rogers retired after the 87 season and Byner only became a Redskin in 89.

>> I know people rushed the field after the last game at RFK. The brother of a friend of mine got a big chunk of turf. He game me a piece of it. I put some of it down in my yard and I still have a bag of dirt and dead grass somewhere in my basement. I think he said the first few guys got grabbed, but then they just swarmed and the cops gave up.

Great thread! Thanks! The one thing I can't remember or find is why did Mark Schlereth leave us for the Broncos? Was it just a money thing? I know he had alot of knee surgeries, but he was a very good guard and I wish he would have stayed with the Skins...

I think it was a money thing. Denver paid him and Casserly didn't want to commit to him.
