In honor of TO, which NFL players do you predict will be broke within 5 years of career's end?

You'll want to make sure he (or she) is honest as much as smart - a lot of times, it's the financial advisor who caused some of the money problems we're talking about here. Just remember - Bernie Madoff was a financial advisor. There are a lot of sharks in that profession. It's better to educate yourself and handle your own money. NO ONE has your own best interests at heart more than you, unless you're addict or a fool.

Once again, that's only the case b/c we DON'T have that much money or don't know how it would feel to be that rich.

I've had a credit rating in the mid 800's since I was in my 20s. My parents instilled in me how to manage my finances. My wife came to this country 8 yrs ago and we slowly built her credit rating up and at one point it actually surpassed mine. It's about being smart.

I was going to say that to him and you said it first. My wife has a Masters Degree in accounting. I think we'd be OK. Plus, my mom retired from a career in finance.

Well you are an exception because money changes people. I've always been very frugal and taken care of my money well but if I were as rich as they were at my age, I'm sure I'd spend a little bit more than my means. But it'd still be fun. But most NFL players came from nothing, no father figure/role model to look up too and teach them about how to manage their money, so I can see how some of them go broke.

Look, I have sympathy for somebody like Brunell, who got caught in the real estate collapse, and insisted on paying off everyone rather than letting the real estate company go bankrupt and washing his hands of it, but I'm not gonna feel sorry for a guy like McAlister who made over $40m during his career and is now broke. Same goes for TO.

They all lose the majority of their money on bad investments. TO lost a great deal of money leveraged real estate investments like Brunell. It's funny how every time you look into these situation how often you see financial planners and lawyers "recommended by my agent" come up.

#1 They make a lot of money. First year UDFA make a LOT of money.300k or so...Practice squad guys make $5700 a week !! If I can make it on my pay...they should be okay.

#2 They also have "Close" to a degree. If they don't last in the NFL ...They can use a few bucks to finish their degree and get a normal job with the rest of the world.

#3 I don't care where you were raised...or how...It doesn't take a rocket scientist to figure out...Ya make 1.3 million...Spend 3.5 million= There is a problem.

I have a professional relationship with a guy who does the taxes and some financial advice for many NFL and NBA superstars (including many Skins). He says a lot of these guys are just absurd in the way they spend their cash. He has to beg some of them during meetings not to spend so foolishly. Said he was there when a bunch of NBA guys (I won't name names) were playing poker and one of them threw a 200k necklace into the pot just for kicks.

With that being said he said a lot of the guys who have no idea what they're doing with their money are really nice guys who often do take his advice. IMO it really takes a lot of effort to blow all that money if you're a really successful player such as TO, so I really don't feel bad for those guys.

I have alot of sympathy for NFL players when it comes to their financial status. We hear the quoted contracts, yet they receive (at best) 50% of that money IFF the entire contract comes to fruition. Taxes and agents take at least 50% of that money right off the top. Most don't make anything off endorsements also.

I don't have any sympathy. Even, after the deducations many of them will clear more in one year than what I'll gross in my lifetime and I'm doing pretty good. If you're making those kind of bucks and can't control yourself, get a financial planner to plan your money and an accountant with a leash on you and your behavior.
