Hitchhiker hospitalized in 'random' drive-by shooting near Glasgow

A West Virginia man is recovering and another man is in jail after what authorities described as a random shooting on Saturday night near Glasgow.

Valley County Sheriff Glen Meier said that on Saturday night, Raymond Dolin, 39, was sitting on the side of Highway 2 a few miles west of Glasgow and waiting for a ride when a man drove up in a maroon pickup, shot him and drove off shortly before 6 p.m.

Dolin, from West Virginia, is hitchhiking across the country and writing a memoir called "The Kindness of America," Meier said.

The perpetrator has been charged with "felony assault with a weapon"?

I thought they'd use a charge like that for pointing a gun, but when you pull the trigger and hit someone, I thought attempted murder has got to be in the picture.

Well, lets not be so harsh.
After all, if you take the trouble to load your gun and put it in your truck, you pretty much HAVE to shoot something at that point.
Otherwise you might look paranoid.
And you bought that gun because it made you feel safe. So damn right, pre-emptively shooting a potentially dangerous hitchhiker is practically a given.
As any rightfully terrified American knows, anyone standing on the side of the road is a possible mass murderer, so you're pretty much doing everyone a civil service.
