If more and more people cut cable out of their life, why do networks continue to shift major games to cable?

When we were all kids, institutions like MNF and the Rose Bowl were frequently on ABC Sports, a legendary sports department of OTA television. Now the major ABC Sports events have largely been shifted over to ESPN, destroying the fabric we grew up with.

The alleged defense of the shift is for "television ratings", as somehow the 18+ demographic viewership is increased when the games are on cable instead of OTA. But, when you've been looking at the Nielsen ratings as long as I have, you notice that OTA ratings have always been better than cable ratings, since OTA is more prevalent and reaches more television sets than cable.

In a world where more and more people cut cable out of their life, and see cable as more of a luxury than a necessity, the move of major events to cable is quite mind-boggling.

I do agree with you on this, I don't know why a lot of the major games have gone to ESPN except to basically force people to pay for ESPN. There is no logical argument otherwise that would convince me that it is about ratings, etc. ESPN has grown to be the most dominate channel for anything sports so they get what they want.

I think that's a pretty good hire for NC State. About the only way they could have gotten better is if Vandy's coach had went there. But I think he's staying at Vandy, iirc.
