Default DM: Is not joining Facebook a sign you're a psychopath? Some employers and psychologists say staying away from social media is 'suspicious'

I feel obligated to report that I am not a member of Facebook.

Is not joining Facebook a sign you're a psychopath? Some employers and psychologists say staying away from social media is 'suspicious'

Facebook has become such a pervasive force in modern society that increasing numbers of employers, and even some psychologists, believe people who aren't on social networking sites are 'suspicious.'

The German magazine Der Taggspiegel went so far as to point out that accused theater shooter James Holmes and Norwegian mass murder Anders Behring Breivik have common ground in their lack of Facebook profiles.

On a more tangible level, Forbes.com reports that human resources departments across the country are becoming more wary of young job candidates who don't use the site.

The common concern among bosses is that a lack of Facebook could mean the applicant's account could be so full of red flags that it had to be deleted.

The day anyone in my HR department suggests this to me is their last day of employment.

HR departments are probably just mad that it takes away an easy way of looking at their private lives without having to pay for a background check. Lazy.

Some articles are so dumb they seem to be written by idiopaths, but in this day and age anything gets "air time." Some psychologists (mainly the competent ones ) say a lack of interest and time for spending a lot activity on even one "social" internet site (let alone 3 or 4) is often a sign of sound mental health and having solid relationships in 3D life.

ES'ers get a bit of a pass, however, because even the die-hard tailgaters are here (with just a couple of twisted exceptions) because they're football fans and this is a football site. And we all know serious football fans are wired up weird already.

It's sad how often we see stories from the Daily Mail posted on here like they were real, unbiased news. The Daily Mail is pap. It is more or less a cross between the New York Post and the National Enquirer.

I like that, Jumbo. Totally explains why there's no FB in this house, and why I am...well, a little nutty.

That's quite a big jump. "No Facebook? This guy must have something to hide"

I do have a facebook, but this is still my favorite commercial. Very clever.

I can't speak for others, but usually when I'm posting a DM article it is for the entertainment value. I post them fully expecting them to generate some interesting and hopefully funny responses. I don't post them as some sort of source for deeply intellectual discussion. But then again, you'll see I generally don't participate in the "intellectual" threads, other than reading them.

I think your characterization of their stuff as falling between the NYP and NE is accurate. Most of their stuff is clearly put out and written in such a way as to generate a reaction (thus readership and revenue, and in that it works), which of course means that it is not reported in an unbiased manner to high journalistic standards. I notice even you (knowing full well it is a DM article) can't resist peeking in to see what it's about. It's like an accident you can't help but look at, which is why they're successful (from a monetary standpoint).

I don't have any of it. I did make a Huffington Post "account" so I could pee off people. But it's funny, I don't feel anonymous when I post. Even on here I don't.

    But,
    on her lips hung
    a smile of dove-secret loveliness,
for only that morning had not
    the blind boy said,
    'You are beautiful'?

This seems like the perfect thread to remind people to like my novel's Facebook page. Also, remember if you haven't bought my book you are clearly a sociopath or worse.

I was one of the first 80,000 users on facebook or so. My school got it in August or September 2004, a couple of months after Zuckerberg expanded it from Harvard, and I signed up to see what the fuss was about. I was a big computer gamer and my time on the computer was spent playing or working at that point. Facebook was boring by comparison. Still is boring. The only reason I still have that account is because old friends will occasionally get in touch with me through it. The only time I ever use it is to do something creepy like look up pictures of some friend's new boyfriend or girlfriend and judge them.

I'd be more worried about the people who spend obsessive amounts of time on facebook. The shine has worn off.
