i think it has become apparent that our 1st pick next year will be the BPA at DB or OT. The good news is that impact players for those positions routinly fall to the 2nd/3rd round. Just the lat couple years we have seen:

I think the Titans will have a good defense in a year or two. I like their mix of talent in the front 7. Klug, Casey, Morgan, McCarthy, Ayers, and Brown is a nice looking group of young players. They've got somewhat of a Bears-like look.

I really wish we could have gotten Janoris Jenkins last year. That's my one regret from the RGIII trade. If only we could have kept that second rounder.

The Rams defense already looks good and they're still very young. They are going to be really good when Quinn, Brockers, and Jenkins grow up. Probably one of the best defenses in the league by that point.

What do people think about Sean Smith in Miami? He matched up against Fitzgerald in week 4, and while Fitz did get a TD, Fitz was lined up in the slot when he got it, while Smith was on the outside. He seems to have improved from last year, and they're giving him more responsibility (he shed 24 lbs in the offseason). Obviously we have to wait and see, but Smith might be an underrated FA CB we could target, and get for a reasonable price, somewhere in the neighborhood of 3-4M a year.

Monk, I wanted to respond first to your comments about Jay Finch:

I think you're right about the weight. He looks kind of chunky and the thing, he looks maxed out. If he's only around 290 now, I wonder just how much he can transform his body for the NFL?

The skills are good, and he runs pretty well. He's coordinated for a big fellow. He looked pretty good against Middle Tenn from what I saw. I'm with you, I think you could take him in the seventh just to see if you can develop him and reshape his body for the NFL. He's got the type of skills and mental makeup to be a stalwart ZBS center.

Yeah he didn't look great against VT and I think you're right that he was having a hard time matching up. #98 on VT is Jr. Derrick Hopkins, who is really having a fine season. Hopkins is listed at 306, but he looks much bigger. Hopkins has an absolutely enormous base and looks like a nice developmental NT for the NFL. He plays with great technique, is flexible, gets really low, and holds his ground regularly. He also has a terrific nose for the ball and finds it often. He had 11 tackles in that GT game, which is pretty rare for a NT. He looks good playing laterally along the LoS too, so he's not just some big stump you can neutralize by uprooting him from his gaps. But I don't think you'll ever see him doing much in the way of attacking downhill and getting after the passer. He's not an every down lineman for an NFL team IMO.

I'd be shocked if he comes out this year, but as good as he's looked so far, he's one too watch for next year's draft. He's not going to be a high pick because he's only 6' even and 306 pounds and he is a pure run defender. But he could be a nice late round pick you squirrel away and develop and in a couple of years you've got a heady, run stuffing nose tackle.

Actually I just looked up Derrick Hopkins's stats and they look good. He's got 24 tackles already, including 1.5 sacks and 3.5 TFLs. So perhaps he is better rushing the passer and getting into the backfield than I thought.

If the price is good on Smith I dont see it as a bad move at all. He's always had the talent and man him and Davis were good for about a year. If we're talking around 5 or 6 million I wouldn't complain

I agree that quote indicates RT is not a high priority for our FO. Could be cost prohibitive to get a good one.

For me the question becomes what is a constitutes good RT for this team?

If this offense is functional (highly) with Polumbus at RT then imo that lowers the level of required performance for the RT postion on this team to be 'good'.
Which then in turn lowers the cost to acquire an upgrade.

Basically at a minimum any RT that projects better then 3rd worst in the NFL is an upgrade.
This offense might work just fine with Compton or Hurt or mid level FA or mid/late round OT or even *gasp* Tyler Polumbus (who for the record I don't like).

RT is one of those positions you want to upgrade, but if its between a CB with better value and a RT who you are reaching for, you take the CB. Will we upgrade RT? I definitely think so, but I also think we have an option in house who can fill the RT need in Tom Compton

I don't think presenting one player as a reach and the other being value pick is a fair representantion.
Imo a more fair question is that if both a CB and RT are available and both represent the same value then who do you pick?

Patriots have an interesting offensive philosophy. They really invested heavily in tackles and tight ends to be able to spread the field. Did a good job drafting their personnel. Tom Brady is a pocket QB, so perhaps their need for great edge protections is higher than ours because RGIII is getting out of the pocket a lot.

But I think it would be nice to really get that second tackle to play on an island. Having two long athletic tackles has helped the Patriots remain a top offense while much of their personnel changed. Having the same would certainly give us more flexibility.

Is the CB one who can start on the outside? If so I'd choose him. If it's more of a slot guy, I think the value is close, and it might actually favor the RT. To break the tie I'd go overall team needs and probably choose CB.

If it could be an outside man coverage starter, that would really improve the D cumulatively. I think it'd put Deangelo and Wilson in better positions. Maybe put the safeties in better positions, or move Deangelo to safety outright. You get more bang for your buck on our roster with a good CB.

I'm just very worried about what will happen when we play teams with 2 edge rushers. Polumbus got manhandled against St. Louis, and I would hate to see another ~28 games of that before we get someone solid into position circa 2014. It's pretty impressive that the line has played so well in spite of his weaknesses.

The OL is one of my main viewing focuses and I've always felt the easiest or most direct means of improving any offense is physical superiority at the POA.

I've been one of the most staunch advocates for upgrading the OL and have been critical of many of the decisions.

I do not want to see Tyler Polumbus unless his level of play improves, which I doubt. (heck I thought we should have cut Chester and I think we should considering benching him now)
However I don't think it will be hard to find an upgrade for Polumbus and I don't think this offense requires the type of dominant RT play I would like, especially in light of some of the other areas that would benefit more from the same resources used to acquire that dominant RT.

Fingers crossed for Tom "stright outta" Compton, but I felt the same way about Willie Smith and got my heart broken.

I'm convinced that Willie Smith being cut was not based on performance alone, I can't remember who but someone posted that there was more to his being cut then just on the field.
Not many agree, which is fine, but I thought Willie Smith was at least as good as Polumbus and laughably better then Jordan Black.
But I digress.....

I think the defense was underachieving and will improve over the course of the season based on execution and scheme comfort alone.
I think some questions we have could be answered for better or for worse as the season plays out.

I like him a lot, watched a few Phins game.
I watched Smith during Hard Knocks too.
Good size, speed, agility, good hands and he can tackle.
Highly competitive.
I don't think Ireland is a good GM by any means but even he's gotta realize they need to re-sign him.

Here's a thought, let's say that something like last year happens, and only one tackle is taken in the top 20, and Jake Matthews is sitting there at 23 or something and we have the opportunity to trade up for, say, our 2nd and 3rd rounder. Matthews is probably as sure fire a ZBS RT as anybody in college right now, do you make that trade up? I know a lot of people will say no, and odds are he won't be there, but I'd definitely have to give it thought.

To make it fair, let's say that same scenario (trade up into mid-20s) plays out with, say Milliner/Banks or Reid/McDonald at CB and S. Do we entertain that trade or just stand pat? I guess a lot of that has to do with our FA, and how that goes will depend a lot on whether Meriweather is here as the starter next year or not.
