We let someone, like loose-lips Hazlett, slip to the media at some point that Smith is on a short list of potential pursuit options in the offseason. Smith's agent finds out, and when Ireland comes to make a new contract, probably low-balling the guy with something like 18M/5 years, they decline, and Smith hits the market looking for something closer to 25M/5 years. If he continues to play well, he could well be worth it.

Silly scenario, but Ireland seems exactly like the kind of guy who'd try and underpay someone like Smith, allowing him to escape into FA. Fingers crossed.
Publicly speaking about interest in a player under contract with another team is tampering. It's just as against the rules as speaking to the player/agent directly. In fact you're even more likely to get caught.

I also think you're underestimating Ireland. He's not a great GM by any means but he isn't a moron either.

I haven't played the new Madden but I bet you could get a 1st out of a package of Bowen/Moss/Meriweather just from ratings. The Madden trading algorithm is so lol. They hardly value first round picks let alone 4th/5th round picks, age is barely considered, it's pretty much purely rating.

If you want more lol, move D-Hall to FS so he becomes a 95 rated FS, then trade him for a first.

Quinn has been impressive but we also have to take into account that 3 of those sacks were against D'Anthony Batiste. The same D'Anthony Batiste that was a backup for our dreadful lines in 2008 and 2009. That was the 9th start in his 9 year career.

I could see Quinn and Kerrigan pretty much being a wash. Quinn will most likely put up better sack totals while Kerrigan is more well rounded due to their different positions. The real tie breakers will be what happens in those additional picks. Does Hankerson ever become a starter? Does Helu get healthy and add to our running game? Lots of factors. Quinn does look good though.

In our defense, is Free Safety or Strong Safety more important? I think FS would be our most important need by the end of the season--Merriweather should prove his worth in our defense as SS to help with run support and to blow up guys in the middle.

I've come to believe that the Safety position has got to be the most coveted spot to fix in the offseason. By the end of the season, we might have had 6-7 guys rotate as starters in both FS and SS spots. Considering our secondary statistical weakness, I really think we will go safety in the 2nd round.

There are not really any young talented safeties that will be a free agent that are much better than what we have.

Many of you keep mentioning this Rambo guy, and what an awesome name. Do we know much about the suspension? Internal team discipline, not sure why though. That could mean so much. I can't find any other discipline or negatives on his record before this one.

Do you guys really see one of the top 2 Strong Safeties in Vaccaro dropping to the ~45th pick (assuming we have rougly 7 or 8 wins)? He's playing WVU's Geno Smith tonight, and that will be a matchup to watch. I for one will tune in. But is SS more important than FS?

No one is talking about Tony Jefferson, why? I see others mention Eric Reid and TJ McDonald. Either way, I am going to watch some of these players.

Which is exactly why you have Haslett, right before he's let go, say something. He's got a history that we can utilize to our advantage.

I do really doubt Smith hits FA, but you never know. Ireland certainly hasn't done

I think Tony Jefferson is supposed to be a guaranteed 1st rounder, so we won't get a crack at him. Eric Reid, TJ McDonald, Kenny Vaccaro, Baccari Rambo are guys we might actually get a chance to draft (though probably not Reid, he's probably going late in the 1st round or early 2nd round).

There are a few more guys than listed there I think. I was looking at http://nfltraderumors.co/2013-nfl-free-agents/ and they seem to have some more guys. I feel like Byrd, Chung, Delmas, or Phillips would all be great starters, and there's a couple other guys maybe worth looking at. I'm currently going through rotoworld's list of contract guys and trying to see who's decent and coming free, but that'll take a couple days.

What about Matt Elam? I don't know a lot about him, can anyone elaborate and give us less informed fans some light on the subject?

Maybe so but unlike our safeties, he can actually cover.

I like Bacarri Rambo a lot. I also like Kejuan Riley from Alabama State as a pure FS.

People are getting a real good look at Anthony Boone from Duke. He's got a nice ball, tight rotation and has good escapability. Throwing motion and ball trajectory reminiscent of Teddy B.

I looked up a thing on Vaccaro, and I got his Oklahoma St. game. He had a very impressive interception but his tackling and block shedding seem to be off as he seemed to whiff a lot in this game, and that worries me with a safety in particular. His first 2 plays in this video are horrendous. He also allowed a TD on a failed bump and reacted pretty childishly.

I know this is just one game and theres more to go, I will keep watching him tonight, especially against WVU and their shifty WRs.
