Hey, do us a favor, and go have your idiot discussions somewhere else. Keep it out of the only consistently good thread in the stadium.

We've been fortunate to have three starting caliber DEs. It could have been worse there.

But you're right, we don't have any true OLBs outside Rak and Kerrigan. There are enough 3-4 defenses in college now that you can probably pick a clean OLB depth level player in the mid to late rounds of the draft.

A lot of our LBers are tweener types. Thankfully they're good.

    - Bruce Irvin has been a lot more successful early than most people would have expected. I liked him, but didn't know he'd be this good. Has to be somewhat of a product of playing with great surrounding talent.
    - Reports of Cameron Wake's demise were apparently overstated.
    - Geno Atkins is a faaaaar better NFL player than college player
    - Ditto for Sam Acho. I never expected him to be this good.
    - I liked Justin Houston and thought the Chiefs got a steal in him, but I'm surprised with how good he already is.
    - Kudos to John Fox for figuring out how to use both Miller and Dumervil and get them both producing. He's a good defensive mind.

I don't know, I actually like our depth on the DL.

In PFF's breakdown of the Falcons game they mention that Jarvis Jenkins is playing well and may actually turn out to be an upgrade from Carriker.

Many 34 OLB are conversion players from college DEs.
I wouldn't knock Jackson, Wilson or White because they're not 'true' OLB.
They're not gonna be able to match the production of 'Rak but I think they'll hold their end.

Not sure if you're talking about Kerrigan or the other guys but Kerrigan was up there in pressures last year.

Brandon Williams, DT Missouri Southern State (DII)
    Brandon Williams, DT MSSU

    HGT: 6-2 WGT: 328
    ...
Brandon Williams of Division II, Missouri Southern State (MIAA).

Williams had a productive true-freshman year in 2008, then missed 2009 with a medical red-shirt, bounced back and had monster years in 2010 and 2011 which garnered him All-American honors from multiple outlets at the end of both respected seasons.

Already after 4 games this season, Williams has recorded 30 tkls; 7 tfls; 4 sacks and 3 forced fumbles. Brandon Williams came in to the 2012 season on many pre-season All-American list and also on the Senior Bowl Watch List.

Williams career totals to date: 158 tkls; 43 tfls; 22.5 sacks and 6 forced fumbles.

You can see Brandon Williams here by focusing on the D-Line. Your eyes will pick him up, even from the removed zoom / angle because he has his cleats/shoes and ankles wrapped up in white tape - you'll notice him and track him easy that way.

Eventually you'll get used to his size, frame and movement so you'll track him naturally. His number is #66. He plays DT.

highlight tape for a former MSSU player, just focus on #66:

There are various other vids out there.

In this average highlight vid, scroll to the 1 minute and 30 second mark - that's a typical Brandon Williams play. Typical pressure by defeating the Guard (Bull, semi Swim) then pushing aside the RB chip block on his way to a sack of the QB.

If you looked at the MNF game you would know Bruce is everybit as good as those stats. He isn't a product of surrounding talent.

Oh I watched him in that game. I saw his elite quickness of the snaps and ability to come around the edge like a missile. But I also saw a hellacious Seahawks defense surrounding him that made Chris Clemons look like a God. When you've got twin towers for corners that can knock a receiver on his ass at the line, and pressure collapsing the pocket from all directions, it's not so hard to win your matchups too.

Clemons didnt get a sack after Bruce got his. And Bruce got to Rodgers quick it wasn't a cover sack. In all actuality his first sack was a power bullrush move.

Also want to say that Wade Keliikipi is a solid player, underrated. He probably won't come out this year as a redshirt Junior, but he's a good cog, NT, for the 3-4. I like him a lot.

This vid has the entire game's defensive plays for Clemson vs FSU, from their week 4 match-up.

Rashard Hall is the FS, #31. Jonathan Willard (LB) is #46. Willard had some nice powerful pops during the game. Goodman wears #97.
    ...

    __

Phillip Thomas of Fresno State & Dexter McCoil of Tulsa - both safeties:

Thomas wears #16, in white. These are brief highlights geared toward Tulsa, you only see Thomas with a tackle or two. Thomas did have a big hit in this game, it was clean, used his shoulder but it was called for a personal foul. It's not shown.

One play Thomas takes the bait on a jumbo run fake, the TE goes uncovered for an easy score, it was his breakdown from a coverage standpoint.

McCoil #26 in blue. They only show one or two of his tackles. He had a much better hit which resulted in a broken-up pass, it wasn't shown. He had 10 tackles on the day.

Just to get a sense of these guys in general.
    ...

    __

    The Thomas hit:

At the 1 minute and 26 second mark is the Leon McFadden interception, which was returned 96 yards for a TD.

Leon McFadden really is one intriguing player for me. Has the ability to become a pretty good CB and could be a nice little sleeper. Still mad we missed out on Sensabaugh last year from Clemson, always thought he was way more underrated that people expected

I didn't think he was going to go in the 4th, I didn't think he would be selected before Brandon Boykin. I forget where I had him ranked last, but I remember thinking later than the 4th. I knew he was athletic, had great measurables from all the workouts, but I also remember he was mostly situational at Clemson, like a nickel corner or 3rd down package kind-of a guy - If I remember right, correct?

Anyway, I know what you mean. I lament not having a shot at Casey Hayward.

Fresno State safety Phillip Thomas leans on coach Tim McDonald
Out all of last year with a broken fibula and dislocated ankle on his left leg, Thomas has played spiritedly in his return and NFL scouts have taken notice.

One AFC scout confided that the 6-foot-1, 215-pound Thomas is one of the top three safeties in the nation.
Thomas received midseason All-America honors from national college football analyst Phil Steele this week. He was on a second team that included McDonald's oldest son, USC safety T.J. McDonald.
It was kind-of humorous to me, while reading the article, to think of TJ McDonald, son of Tim McDonald, especially pertaining to the point of the elder McDonald being a technician of the position and coach, because I always felt like TJ was out-of-control when playing safety, blowing his assignment, going for the big hit rather than playing with-in himself.

Least that's what I remember of him last year. I haven't had a chance to look at TJ this year as of yet. If he can control his tendency to overpursue and hone the tackling to solid form tackles rather than the knockout shot, he'll grade higher in my book.
