Bout to look at some real defense. I hope we can sign Jason McCourty, Talib, and Louis Delmas. And get either Green Bay DB coach or Pitt LB coach.

If we got the GB DB coach, we should try to sign Sam Shields IMO.

I've been a big advocate of getting Shields and Talib/DRC if there is anyway possible Allen/Danny can pull that off.

I think we can get Talib, but he's less desirable than DRC because of his off field history. DRC is going to cost some coin. Friggin cap penalty.

McCourty signed a big extension before the year.

Ok well maybe we can get a Sam Shields/Talib CB combo with Mundy from the Steelers to play safety. Draft Ansah/BYU DE in the second and draft Rambo in the 3rd. That puts playmakers all in our defensive backfield.

Am I the only one who doesn't really like DRC or Talib and especially the amount of money they will cost? They aren't great cover corners, more playmakers with insane athleticism.

I think we can bring in cheaper and better options.

Our entire draft better be on defense

Talib aint costing nothing. And I dont agree with on getting better options for cheaper. There will be a reason they're cheaper.

    double post

I guess I will use this to say that we should really look at Bacarri Rambo as a legitimate option, he has been playing incredibly well

I wonder how likely it is to get next years cap back? Or is that completely over?

I disagree DRC would be Dhall without the mouth except faster/younger and still more upside. If our passrush can be what it's supposed to be next year and we can actually cover deep our DBs will have more shots at making a play on the ball. Shields and DRC excell at this. I would obviously prefer them two over a guy like Talib, but not sure how feasible it is considering our cap situation.

If we cut Dhall in the offseason will we save 8 million/plus? Is that correct? Will this help at all?

Regardless at least sign one of these two and draft a S and CB.

Shields is an RFA. No way you're getting him outta GB.

If we're going to stick with the 3-4 we need a legit NT, and it's not Cofield. I'd like to see us go after a stud NT in the draft or FA and kick Cofield out to DE, giving us more flexibility out there with him, Carriker, Bowen, and Jenkins. Not sure what legit 3-4 NTs will be around when we draft: Jesse Williams from Bama comes to mind for the 2nd and maybe Georgia's Kwame Geathers in later rounds.

Didn't realize Shields was RFA. Definitely won't get him then. I agree we need a true NT so we can have more depth on the ends.

And I realize we will probably have to resort to Talib.

    Default Safety

I think Reid is an eye popping hitting that flies around and can really blow people up.
Probably the best athlete in this position groups class, great acceleration/closing speed. But, I question whether he would fit as FS because of his imo average coverage skills and recklessness. Doesn't consistently bring his arms when he tackles, but to his credit doesn't often need to. Its to easy a comparison to make but kinda reminds me of LaRon.

McDonald is my top FS followed by Duke Williams. These guys are disciplined players both in pursuit angles and in tackling form; they are wrap tacklers not just hit/lunge(dive)chop tacklers.
Both have a lot of experience playing deep half safety.

The next guys I liked were Hall, Swearinger and Vaccaro.
Rambo kinda reminds me of Reid a little but athletic guy that flies around but imo he's even more undisciplined of safetey then Reid too many lunge/dive tackles.

Haven't watched any of Elam, Lester

This is not a prediction of where I think they'll go but this is how I would rank the Safety group:

    1) McDonald
    2) Reid
    3) Willams
    4) Hall
    5) Vaccrro
    6) Swearinger

    Not at all.

I think the best way to improve the defense is by addressing the secondary via the draft. Maybe we'll get lucky and have a 1981 49ers draft class (Lott, Wright, Carlton), which had every bit as much impact on the 49ers superbowl run as Joe and Jerry.
