Cofield is the best defensive lineman we've got and even there, it's not like he's a pass rush specialist. But he is the most distributive player on the d-line, whether it be run and/or pass.

Melton would help so much with the pass rush. Melton can create for himself so much with his ability to penetrate, his speed and shoot gaps. But his presence would create for the other pass rush specialists too: Kerrigan or a situational Rob Jackson or a draft pick like Quanterus Smith would benefit just from his presence.

I like Quin because he has a TON of passes defended in the NFL as a safety. More than any of the other free agent safeties by a mile. And he'll probably have a reasonable contract, at least not as much as Byrd (I'd suspect). Likewise he's not dealing with a bunch of injuries that Delmas and others have a history of (goldston).

However, I do like Derek Cox, that's why I listed him, but you have to hedge your bet with him because of his continually injuries. When he was right, back in the early part of the season, he was very much a sold corner in defending the pass. PFF had a good article on him.

BUT, it's just that continuous knee and hamstring of his ...

That's why I listed Talib and Cary Williams.

Of your FA list, Melton will be too expensive, Vollmer could easily blow up in our faces just like Jammal Brown, Maualuga, I haven't seen him play much this year but PFF thinks he's a scrub. Andre Smith? Might be expensive, but I'd like him. I think RT is going to have to come in the draft though, and we need to hope that Fletcher can provide one more season of starter level play.

What about Sean Smith, CB from Miami? He's a solid starter, maybe better than solid, and he can push Wilson to 2 and Hall to 3.

I'd also go after Jared Cook from the Titans so we don't have to draft TE. As for RB, I really want Mike Gillislee, but he might go too early for where I'd want to take him.

Also I'd hire the Vikings training staff, draft Lattimore in the 6th or 7th if he decides to come out (he might decide that NFL-level medical staffs might make his recovery smoother and it's pretty safe to say someone will at least give him a year on IR) and see if we can't strike gold there.
Everyone liked Cody that year. I think everybody on ES wanted him in the second. His athleticism was hinted at with the blocked kicks at Bama and the rumors of him throwing down athletic dunks when playing basketball. Didn't realize he was that good a runner though until I saw him playing contain on RGIII.

Jones has taken a while, got drafted injured had lots of injuries his first years but it looks like he's started to play to his potential. He's so strong. Crazy to think he's the third best professional athlete in his family. Chandler is shaping up like a beast and Bones Jones is pretty magnificent.

Sean Smith would be great but I think he's going to be expensive too. Very good young corner with the kind of size to be an elite man coverage guy. He's one of Miami's best players, I would be surprised if they let him go.

Jared Cook sounds good to me.

Maualuga would be a stop gap. I don't think we'd need him because I think Fletch is going to come back next year. If we did sign him, I like his size, physicality, and blitzing ability mostly. 2 down ILB.

Vollmer would be nice, but I wouldn't commit a ton of money to him given his age and injury history. Andre Smith has never lived up to his college potential, and I'm not sure he's a great ZBS fit, but I wasn't sure Jammal Brown would be either. I'd give Smith a look for the right price. But tackles are so expensive, it does seem likely the draft is the only way we're going to get another good one.

Lattimore is definitely an interesting proposition because of his remarkable talent. He's worth considering in that range as a long term lotto ticket. But we need someone who can come in and be the backup right away next year.

Agree, but I've been looking around at a number of other teams "boards," equivalent of the comprehensive, and to-a-man, every team I come across is well high on Brandon Williams and Q. Smith.

So, I just expect that the more success the Skins have, the later they will select in the draft and possibly those guys get snatched up by the teams in front of us.

I don't know how to express it, but I'm with you, I'd like to have them too.

I just expect that those guys that you just "see it" with them, they go sooner than later.

The problem with Melton is that he's not an every down player in our scheme. He's strictly a 1 gap type of player. PFF listed Melton as being one of the league leaders (for DT's) in rush stops, yet gives him an overall negative grade against the run. If we could grab him as a situational pass rusher, he'd be amazing for us, but he'd be a really expensive player that would have a limited number of snaps.

I'd rather just develop Keenan Robinson, and keep our current group of linebackers for another year.

Grade 1 "sprain" on right knee.

Shanahan talking about the LCL ... as grade 1.

Apparently Dr. James Andrews was on the sideline and gave the ok for RG3 to go back into the game ... prior to him collapsing after the intentional grounding, then the subsequent training table evaluation and no return.

Andrews is on the sideline "all of the time," or "most of the time."

He's young, would be a reasonable contract, we're working with a budget, B-More has a good track record for talent at CB, he has a good line as it pertains to passes defended (18 in 2011 and 13 so-far in 2012), he made some solid plays yesterday against us, has 4 INTs on the year, he's got length and he wouldn't have to alter his life completely by moving from Balmer to DC.

Man how much must we pay him to keep him on our sideline? He is THE joint doctor for every sport I cant believe he stands on our sideline on game days.

Default Randoms thoughts from the game

    -Kirk Cousins was clutch

    -Crawdog's punt return was clutch

-I finally saw LBs effectively taking away passing lanes with their zone drop postion/awareness

-As much as I love Alfred Morris I can't help but drool over this missed opportunities out there. With the right read and the right cutback this scheme creates some big play chances in the run game and even when Morris makes the right read/right cutback he still lacks the speed to fully capitalize on the opening

-Rob Jackson is thriving now that he's not part of rotation that removed him from the field on known pass rushing downs

-Nothing new here but Maddie Williams needs to be replaced

-This game portrayed an accurate picture of our run defense

Well, I actually think their grade reflects something that concerns his assignment in the Bears scheme, not so much his ability or lack thereof.

I can see why he's ranked high in rush stops, because he's getting penetration or already in the backfield. When he's crashing down the line, he's so quick, that he can catch a runner on zone stretch away from him.

So he impacts the stats that way in terms of quantity.

I'm watching the Bears v Vikings game from yesterday and I see Melton beat his man to the inside and has enough speed and angle to tackle Peterson down the line. The o-line was running zone stretch, so there was an opportunity to go with the flow.

Other times he's already 3 yards in the backfield as the RB is just getting the ball and he might be "running bye the play."

So, I can see why he'd have a negative grade "against the run," according to PFF, in general, because they see him flying one way and the RB going the other way.

You see, I attribute that to his assignment, not so much him.

He obviously leads DTs in sacks, so we all can see how sudden he can be with his first step and how quickly he gets up-field. He's doubled teamed a lot in pass situations. So that alone will open things up for someone else.

But I'm of the opinion that he has enough functional strength and enough size to be stout at the POA to be effective in our scheme against the run.

Again, I kind-of want a departure from the plodding 2-gap "cog." But uhm, I don't know ... until I have an actual idea how much money he really wants, I don't know when to say how much, is too much, concerning what he can do.

Even if he is just a situational player like you intimated, I think we need more highly specialized players, especially for pass rush.

I'd rather just develop Keenan Robinson, and keep our current group of linebackers for another year.
Melton might play strictly 1-gap with the Bears but he has a skillset that is required and missing from our current DL. Melton can get upfield penetration and pass rush.
And while our defense stems from the LeBeau/Capers defenses which are not strictly '2-gap' they also stunt, slant and like with any DL in pass rush situations: get upfield pressure.

DL with Melton's skillset should be welcome on any DL.

I'm with on our LBs corps, keep em together let them develop. Lets see what we have so an accurate assesment/decision can be made.

And again, just because a player is on an FA list does not at all mean he's making it to FA. Everyone would love Jairus Byrd, but buffalo would be dumb to let him go. Same goes for almost everyone on that list. Sean Smith is Miami's best corner, and unless they particularly eye one in the draft I really doubt they send him packing. The only time you may get a good player is when he is in a bad position, a la Asomugha in Oakland or Bailey here. If Talib were still in TB I would think he'd be an FA, but with the patriots he'll likely be resigned. Kerry Rhodes is a player I could see becoming an FA. Adrian Wilson as well (that Cardinals team is getting blown up). Shields is a possibility.

Manny Lawson could suit us well as a backup and pass rush specialist (he could fly back in college). He could probably start elsewhere so he likely wouldn't sign with us, but always a thought.
