I guess I am just miffed because we had an opportunity to bring him in a couple of years ago and he went to the Eagles... then we had another chance this year and he went to Houston. Were we waiting for a "show me" performance or were we just that low on him/that high on Polumbus?
I suspect we were worried about the injury he was coming off of and didn't want another Jammal Brown on the 53.
FREE ROB
That is correct. He's got a pretty long injury history.
2009 - missed half the season
2010 - missed 5 games
2011 - missed the whole season (This was when he got signed by the Eagles)
He got signed by the Broncos at the start of this season, but got cut before the season. The Texans picked him up, and he's had his first real injury free season since 2008. Because of this, I don't think we could view him as the answer at RT. I'm not opposed to signing him on the cheap, since with the Cap Penalty we have to make concessions. However I'm kind of leaning towards giving our youth a shot. Developing talent from within.
And here I go off on a tangent about our o-line's future.
This could be a stupid idea, but I like the idea of running a ZBS with much bigger guys. If we can get some guys who are huge, and can still get to the 2nd level, our o-line could really dictate games. I feel like we'd match up a bit better against the Steelers this season. Against them we struggled to prevent penetration or get past the d-line to the 2nd level.
The stereotypical ZBS lineman is smaller than average, and the Bronco's average o-line weight in 2004 (random google searching) was 295 pounds. I think it's a little telling that Mike Shanahan has started to focus a bit more on the heavier (yet still quick) players.
Shanahan's old offensive lines in the early 2000's with Denver had guys like Tom Nalen (286), Matt Lepsis (290), Cooper Carlisle (295), Dan Neil (285).
The Texans o-line this year is between 304 - 307.6 lbs.
Duane Brown - 320
Wade Smith - 307
Chris Myers - 290
Ben Jones - 303
Derek Newton - 318 (Ryan Harris - 300)
Last season, Houston's o-line had Mike Brisiel (310) and Eric Winston (305) instead of Jones and Newton.
Our current o-line is:
Trent - 325
Kory - 284
Monty - 304
Chester - 309
Polumbus - 305
Next season there are two possible o-line changes. Josh LeRibeus at LG, and for the sake of this post, let's say Maurice Hurt (who started 1 game at RT this season) develops and wins the RT job. (FYI, Tom Compton weighs 308)
Our possible o-line next season could be:
Trent - 325
LeRibeus - 315
Monty - 304
Chester - 309
Hurt - 329
Redskins 2012 average - 305.4
Redskins 2013 average? - 316.4 (w/Compton, 312.2)

Its a misconception that the ZBS requires small OL. (<-----I'm pretty sure Mike Shanahan has said this himself) The ZBS requires OL that have above average movement. The combo of size/speed in an OL is expensive and the speed is more important then the size therefore Shanahan kind find the speed quality later in the draft at the expense of size.
Here are some other teams that use ZBS: Dolphins, Philly, Raiders, Packers, Seahawks none of which have 'small' OL

I always watch the prospects, whether or not I think they'll get picked by our FO. I'm not just a fan of the Burgundy and Gold but a fan of the NFL and I watch a lot of football.

I remember Shanahan saying something like that. And good point about the size factor in the later rounds.
Looking back at the Bronco's draft picks in the 2000's with Shanahan, the highest drafted non-Tackle was in round 4. So now Josh LeRibeus is the highest drafted non-Tackle he's had in over a decade. Who knows, this could be an indicator that Shanny is valuing size+speed a bit more for the o-line.

FYI Shrine Game practices start today. Should be a good game this weekend. Also have 2 CAA players in it with Cooper Taylor from Richmond and Earl Watford from JMU

I guess the first part would be to see whom the skins can get to redo contracts to free up some cap room. FA looks decent this year. Time for Bruce to show his worth and get us some space. Cant count on the draft for results right away but I would love an OL and DBacks
Terron Armstead who I mentioned earlier in this thread has had a good start to the day from what i've seen on twitter. Would be a project, but very talented guy

I wish Shanny was coaching the senior bowl again this year
Barry Cofield is LEGIT... no more nonsense about we need a "real" NT... HE IS THE REAL DEAL!!!! He goes to the Pro Bowl this year, book it!!!
Some names to watch out for in the Shrine game at Safety:
West:
Cody Davis, S, Texas Tech
Zeke Motta, S, Notre Dame
Duke Williams, S, Nevada
Shamarko Thomas, S, Syracuse
East:
Josh Evans, S, Florida
Rashard Hall, S, Clemson
It's gonna hit me pretty hard if we don't draft a secondary player in the 2nd round lol. I mean i know Shanahan and everyone knows what they're doing but i'm pretty set on a secondary player and he's been known to pull draft surprises.
I think people have to understand that our starters at safety didn't play this year. What we saw isn't indicative of the play of our starters, so it's silly to judge it without knowledge of it. And we all know pass rush and coverage are related, and our pass rush was pretty poor this year. I'm not too convinced we need immediate secondary upgrades as long as our projected starters come back.
