Yeah my fault. I was posting my theories in the Tailgate thread as theories, and my post in this thread built on that. Sorry for no context.

2.) He was partially duped and lied. Which means that some elements of this were a hoax, but he perpetrated and built up the lie. He said that he met her at a Stanford game. They went to Hawaii. He tweeted a picture of a meal that she cooked him and his father, his father said he met her. So either him meeting her was a complete lie, or in the last couple years we've developed complicated holographic imaging software specifically designed to trick and fool a good-but-overrated football player. Perhaps whoever duped him told him to make up stories of how they met or something, but again, seems unlikely.
I think it could plausibly be a combination of the first two. He thought he was chatting to a real woman, and then exaggerated the relationship when talking to the media. Maybe it started out with him not wanting to admit he'd never met the girl he claimed he was going out with (perhaps he was already feeling foolish), and then the whole thing snowballed. The fake death may have been an attempt to simply put an end to the whole thing, something he saw as a way out without him having to admit there was never anyone real, which by that point he had probably figured out.

He would still be a deeply flawed character under this scenario, but perhaps not quite the scheming manipulator. There are a lot of ifs and maybes to get to this assessment, but the story is just so bizarre you have to wonder that he would come up with so convoluted a lie to boost his public image.

Guys, this thread is about the draft. If you want to talk about Teo as far as drafting him goes, that's fine, but talking about the hoax is getting off topic. There is a thread in the tailgate about 15 pages long talking about the hoax. I'm not trying to be a jerk, but we should stay on topic, which is the draft and draft prospects.

Then count me in the Brennan Williams bandwagon!

Do you think Ace Sanders is a second round pick. I think his skillset warrants one.

Him being gay makes the most sense. He wanted an excuse for why he wasn't running through girls at Notre Dame the way a star player would, and he wants an excuse for his parents who are devout mormons. So he made up a fictitious girlfriend in a long distance relationship so people wouldn't ask him why he didn't go after girls who were throwing themselves at him.

If he's not gay, then either he's dumb and gullible, or thought it would be funny in a sick twisted way. I just don't buy the "follow the money" bit. He was already pretty hyped going into this season. It raised him in the Heismann talk, but his actual rookie salary probably wouldn't have increased all that much.

I think our draft prognosticating will remain a bit unsettled until we get some fresh rumors on what the coaches think of our 3 OL draftees last year. Obviously Leribeus is staying. Gettis and Compton? Are they viewed merely as long-term depth? If so, we may be looking at OL in rd 2 or 3. If they are viewed as having starter potential, then we can look at other areas.

I'm not so sure there was a conspiracy to inflate Te'o's draft stock going on. I think he's probably just crazy. I'm not trying to be an ass or insensitive, I don't know what type of mental illness this kind of behavior would fall under. I'm sure there is one.
The problem is that it's not so unreasonable to think that Teo's family was in on the coverup, or at least lying to cover Teo's ass even if they themselves were unsure. It's not just Teo who was out there talking about this girlfriend, it was their entire family. What good family, especially those traditional close-knit Samoan families, start talking about a girl as a potential daughter-in-law without having even met her?

Anyway, I'll take it out of this thread.

    Thoughts?
I'm surprised to see you drafting Amerson in the second; unless you're drafting him as a Safety? I got the impression you weren't a fan.

Charles Davis seem to like Cyprien, I haven't found any game cut-ups. But, from what I've read and his numbers he seems like an interesting prospect in the mid/late round range.

Have to do some research on Brennan Williams and Sanders Cummings

Amerson seems like a big project but I admit i'm very intrigued with him. However i'd really like to have Swearinger or a corner like Poyer or Rhodes if he were to fall to us.

Rhodes isn't making it out of the 1st. But I still think there's a chance Poyer reaches us. I really like Poyer's coverage ability and with a good safety behind him he could be a serious ballhawk. I think he could reach us because of how lackluster he is against the run.

Not high on Commings. But, if it's that late, I would not be too upset.

I don't really like him either, but I also think the 4th is too high for him. I think he's more of a 5th-6th.

With more and more coming out with the Te'o thing....with at least an average combine for a player of his percieved skill, I wouldn't be shocked to see him literally anywhere between the 1st and 4th round.

IF London retired...I'd actually not be bothered by using our 2nd round pick on him as it's seeming more and more that the most he's going to be "guilty" of is hyperbole and embellishment of the relationship between him and the catfish once it started becoming a media hot topic. But it's looking harder to think he actively participated in or knowingly went along with the hoax the whole time.

As far as I know, there are no criminal repercussions. The charities started in her name went straight to Leukemia research. That said, I don't like Te'o as a prospect. We want someone who can actually man up on a TE and stay with them. Hopefully that's Keenan Robinson. I feel like the FO has done a pretty solid job drafting ILB's with our 4th round picks. The only reason I'd want to draft an ILB before then is if they show they can be great in coverage and also blitz well. And by blitz well I mean has shown the ability to avoid cut blocks, and quickly get past a RB or FB who stays in to pass block.

Something Te`o does not do well is shed blocks from bigger taller guys. He's not the best at getting under long arms. I suppose he could be taught better technique, but still...there are a few too many areas of his game that need developing.
