The "experts" had Blaine Gabbert going first overall in 2011 around this time, and Cam's massive ego, little experience and character issues had Cam not being drafted in the first round period. The "experts" basically said it was a lock that we were going to draft Jake Locker. The "experts" are guessing just as much as the rest of us are.

Yeah...and all I was saying is that I think Reid did and does good work with QBs. The fact that his QBs struggle without him is a testament to that.

In regards to the whether or not he picks Geno I don't have a guess. But, I'm sure the QB he chooses will do well.

I have seen a number of mocks with the only QB in the 1st being Smith, but the only draft where I see Smith outside of the top 10, let alone 1st round, is Kiper's. McShay, Rang, Brugler, and tons of other guys have Smith going generally to either the Chiefs at 1, the Eagles at 4, or the Cardinals at 8, and I find it really hard to believe he'd make it past those teams.

Personally I'm higher on Smith than I was on Tannehill, and I'm WAY higher on him than I was on Weedon. Of course, I thought Tannehill was a late 1st rounder, and Weedon didn't belong in the 1st at all, so Scouts Inc. putting him at 23rd on their big board sounds about right. Of course, the best QBs in the class tend to get over-drafted, so his value probably only goes up.

The other thing to remember is that Reid pretty much has 3 choices with that #1 pick, Smith, trade down, or pick another position.

Trading down might not be a terrible idea, but will teams trade up? Maybe the Eagles or Cards will, but this isn't like last year, the market for the pick will be smaller. If there isn't good value to be had for trading down then Reid has to choose between Smith and another position. In that case, unless he's drafting pure, 100% BPA, he has to ask himself if any player on the board will benefit his team as much as Smith, and unless he absolutely hates Smith, the answer to that question is probably no.

It's a poor situation to be in for Reid, but that's where he is. If he doesn't bring anyone in through FA, I would say there's a very good chance Smith is in KC next year.

I agree he does good work with QBs, but I think his reputation is a bit inflated. He builds solid systems and teaches them well, but even looking at the non-McNabb QBs he's had, none of them really looked like long term franchise guys even while playing for him. Even Kolb, who he got a small fortune for, had only 60% completion and a 1-1 TD/INT ratio in 2010.

The thing I feel most comfortable saying about Reid is that he can make poor QBs look "ok," but he still, like so many other coaches, hasn't found consistent play from any QB outside of the 1st round.

Did I miss something about Justin Hunter? Wasn't he always viewed as a borderline 1st-2nd round type of guy?

Default Late to the Game on the Senior Bowl

I must have missed it then.
CBs already been covered mostly-but small school (local kid) CB Webb looked good

DL that stood out might be in range: Slyvester Williams DT/DL 3-tech/5-tech body type upfield penetration ability

LB-one prospect really jumped out to me just based on his speed and size combination Zaviar Gooden I don't know much about his production but the dude is built well and moves well, the Mayock and crew said his forte was coverage and he delivered on que with an interception (albiet on a pass thrown more or less right to him) nfldraftscout estimates he'll run a sub 4.5 and he looked it

OL: Jordan Mills from LaTech caught my eye; late add is built like a ZBS RT but can plays stout at the point and set the edge, his movement ability will be interesting to watch at the combine; could be late round flyer type 5th roundish

    Ahhh the Safeties:

TJ McDonald-Has real physical presence about him, he's 6'2 and listed at 211 but looks bigger. Was effective in blitz one-on-ones. Mayock and crew mentioned that his coverage against TEs was very good. I saw one rep on man vs a WR; the WR couldn't separate from him he ran stride for stride. TJ isn't as fluid out his breaks as some of the other S prospects like Thomas and Duke (who are really good in man coverage) but his sheer size does some of his covering for him. With that being said-in the actual game when he was at SS manned up against a TE(Bama) he had tight coverage and got beat by a very good throw where I thought he could have made a play on the ball but missed it. In practice session he picked off an overthrow and for my money he made the splash play of the S group in practice when he crushes a pulling guard on a trap/counter play. Played almost exclusively at FS in practice and in the game.

Phillip Thomas-Looked smaller then I expected but in a good way. He looked a little bulky and kinda lumbering to me in his cut-ups. He looked quick and very fluid even when in man coverage against WRs. He was also very effective blitz vs blitz pickup. But my main questions about Thomas couldn't be addressed in the Senior Bowl: pursuit angles, tackling consistency/form (wrapping, bringing your arms) deep middle zone coverage ability instincts. Played mostly SS in practice and in the game. But overall I was pleasantly surprised with his movement ability.

Rambo-Looked squatier (is that a word) or thicker then I expected, and didn't move as well as I expected. I didn't get to see him in one-on-one blitz and only saw a little bit of him in coverage and the receiver was able to gain separation from him. Like with Phillip Thomas my main concerns about him can't be answered in a Senior Bowl setting: pursuit angle consistency, tackling consistency/form (bringing your arms). Split time at Free/Strong with Lester.
But in the game I gotta give it to him he had tight coverage on his man and the QB threw the ball and he made the play for an INT

Duke Williams-Built like filled out CB. Was effective in blitz-vs-blitz pick-up. Covered like a CB when matched up in man-to-man vs WRs. He was active on game day, flying around dishing out hits. But he scared the mess out of me when he ducked his head on tackle and almost knocked himself out, but he got up and was back in the game. Played mostly Free in practice and in games. (I wonder if teams will try and move him to CB based on what he runs at the combine, I suspect dude is gonna run fast)

Cyprien is rocked up. Dude has been in the gym. He was effective and physical in blitz. His coverage in man wasn't as good as Thomas and Duke BUT he pressed the hell out the guy at the line so for all intents and purposes the coverage after that was moot. He's not the as fluid of a mover as the other guys but has good straight line speed. The difference in competition didn't matter he looked as good or better then he did on the cut-ups Dukes posted. Cyprien is an NFL player. Played mostly at SS in practice and in the game.

    RBs /WRs:
Terrance Williams-Looked the part. Very smooth, very fluid in and out of breaks. Gets separation with ease and has deep speed and has good eyes for playing the ball in flight. I am against drafting a WR early but if this guy is sitting there with the 2nd pick, well....nah...we gotta trade down and get the value

Goodwin-Reminds me of Tana, but not as quick.

Harper-reminds me on Anquan Boldin moves well despite his size, doesn't appear to have great speed but gets in and out of his breaks well and shows agility when playing/reacting to the ball in the air

Aaron Mellette-Physical skillset of a prototypical WCO WRs. But is very, very, raw.

Guys I would like as ZBS backs- Franklin UCLA, Stefon Taylor Stanford, Gillisee Florida

Nice, thanks for the write up! I've looked around a little for post bowl analysis and haven't found too much. I like that you say Cyprien has really good press ability. I don't think that's common for safeties.

What did you think of Wheaton, Dobson, and Patton?

Don't know much about Zavier Gooden, but I'll keep an eye on him in the combine. I'm a fan of drafting/developing our linebackers instead of hitting FA for depth. I wouldn't mind spending another 4th or later on one. Depth matters, and with Fletcher's age, who knows.

I wouldn't be surprised to see Cyrpien end up going in the late 1st. He really separated himself as that guy down at the senior bowl. Now teams will go back to his film and see he's been doing this all year

They are all good. I'd say Patton is the most polished WR, but Dobson has the most potential and upside to be a true #1 WR. He has the big frame, speed, and very good hands. All three seem to run good routes though.

All three would be upgrades to the WR core, but I prefer to get Dobson as the potential true #1 WR threat.

    Round 2-Justin Hunter WR
    Round 3-DJ Swearinger S
    Round 4-Blidi Wreh-Wilson CB
    Round 5-Kerwynn Williams RB
    Round 5-Ace Sanders WR
    Round 6-Damion Stafford S
    Round 7-Chris Thompson RB

Rontez Miles, FS, #9, California University of Pennsylvania, 6.0' 200lbs.
-was recruited by several SEC schools but chose Kent State to play with his stepbrother but transferred due to grades and "distractions"
-after a year at JuCo enrolled at Cal-PA
-seemed to have played alot of deep FS, but as you will see is a very good tackler and gunner

Personally my favorite play starts at 4:56

Apologies if this video has previousley been posted.

If he was there I think we would have. Then I think we traded back to draft Ponder, and it didn't workout because Minny got him. Then I think we though that either Kaepernick or Dalton would be there for us in the 2nd. I remember that Kyle was high on Kaepernick and probably has been working on this Pistol offense since he fell in love with him.

Yeah, 2011 was weird. I think we kept getting hosed in terms of getting the guy we wanted. I had sort of wanted Kaepernick, I really liked him from his time at Nevada. It just seemed like 4 guys or so just sort of slipped through our fingers. It ultimately worked out, but watching that 2011 draft was annoying for the first 2 rounds was really annoying in terms of getting a QB.

New Walter mock is up, they have us going Terrance Williams in the 2nd, Leon McFadden in the 3rd, and Shawn Williams in the 4th.

I'm more or less ok with the results, but I have a few reservations:
    - Williams probably doesn't last to our pick, he's too good. If he's gone Walter has Amerson sticking around in the 2nd, as well as Tavon Austin going one pick before us. If Williams goes earlier, it's possible Austin gets pushed down...maybe. More to the point, they have Poyer in the 3rd, and if he's there in the 2nd I probably take him, maybe even over Williams.
    - McFadden is ok, but one thing I noticed is they have Poyer, Rambo, Alford, Ryan, Jefferson, and McDonald all going in the 3rd within about 15 picks of us. If that scenario appeared, I would hope we'd use that extra 5th, trade up, and snag Rambo or someone.

I have no problems with Shawn Williams in the 4th, he's good value there, though I do wonder what our plan for RT would be.

If Terrance Williams is there you jump all over that. Im sure RG3 would be calling Shanny if that happened.

Williams and Garcon would be scary on the outside
