I would really like to see Jarvis Jenkins move to NT for the run packages as his primary role and kick Cofield into a wider technique.

Cofield makes a lot of sense as either a one or three technique in the 2 down linemen packages.

Watching the Houston-Detroit game was pretty fascinating from a DL perspective. Both teams featured absolutely elite DL talent. Probably the three best DLs from college the 2010 & 2009 seasons in Suh, Watt, and Fairley.

Anyway, Watt is just outrageously good right now. I'm not sure I can remember another time I've seen an interior defensive lineman be this much in the zone for a season. He's just constantly winning in every way. Oh and I LOVE that Dikembe Mutumbo finger wag after he bats passes. He's the rightful MVP thus far.

My point is we obviously don't have a player like one of those three. We're not getting one in the draft either. This class has some great defensive front talent, but Jarvis Jones is the only player of their caliber IMO. Hankins and Lotuleilei are awesome but they're a notch down. They haven't produced like Fairley, Suh, and Watt did in college.

So how do we get to enjoy an impact interior DL similar to what the Texans and Lions have? I doubt we get one. I doubt we're even actively looking for one. I think the FO is pretty content with the four or five main guys they've already got. They're all good enough players and we're probably going to have four starting caliber guys once Jenkins develops. That makes it our deepest position. And while you can always use more talent on the DL, lack of first rounders + strong depth probably means no DL drafted high for a little while
    Suh, Fairley are both overrated.

But I really lean towards BPA except QB, RB, OLB, and possibly safety because I think we can get high impact performance with lesser resources than a 2nd. RT is top priority, but a dominant WR, DL, ILB, or CB has to be taken. We an use upgrades at any of them.
I agree a lot of what you say.
But there is no way I include T Jack and Meriweather in my plan for the S position.

My plan for the DB position:

    Plan A:

    Jarius Byrd at FS
    Sean Smith at CB
Meriweather at SS with Gomes or Swearinger as backup

    Plan B:
    Louis Delmas at FS
    Kenny Vaccaro at SS
    Gomes as backup

I really want to get the DB position taken care of in FA, so we can concentrate on getting a RT and more skill position talent to push this offense over the top.

I would hold a roster spot open for Merriweather to return. He's worth the shot IMO. He looked very good in the Eagles game.

Jackson is probably a lost cause. I don't trust him.

I think you could get one good safety via draft or FA and then make do with Hall/Gomes/Doughty at the other spot until Merriweather returned.

Suh is a monster so powerful.

I'd bring back Merriweather and Jackson. Jackson had some tackling issues his last year but his career got derailed from abuse and suspensions. Early on, he was a damn good FS againest the pass. If he is clean and mind right I think he can really help this team. I would bring in another safety either a vet with starting experience or a rookie. I also like Vaccarro the best but its not a huge difference in a guy you can get in rd2 vs rd4.

Cofield has been playing well but Jenkins really flashed rushing the passer yesterday. I think he needs to drop a few pounds he looks lumbering but if he does he is gonna be a handful.

Archer is the type of talent we need to all together replace Banks. Although Tavon Austin is my first choice i'm falling in love with him like TY Hilton last year. Can't wait to watch Tavon Austin today nothing like 4 straight days of football.

I also think we need to find other ways of useing Aldrick Robinson because teams are gonna key on him running deep routes because it seems to be the only time they bring him in. Let him run some of the gimmicky decoy stuff Banks does, let him run reverses just mix it up. I would'nt be mad at all if they just cut Banks and let Robinson return kicks. I've been a Banks supporter but he is a wasted roster spot at this point.

It's like the light has clicked on for Fairley and Suh the past three games. Houston has a great OL, but those two were winning. Detroit's defense doesn't seem very good after Avril and those two. They kept Detroit in the game defensively.

Matt Stafford has been regressing IMO. His mechanics look awful this year. He's throwing off his back foot every throw and using that low slot throwing motion like he's playing third base or something. He's playing like he feels the rush and can't ever set his feet. He's just winging it, I don't like it.

What do you all make of FSU OLB/DE Brandon Jenkins? He's going to declare for the draft.

I don't really mind if Robinson's presence causes the defense to key on him for the deep ball. If he draws his CB and a safety has to watch him deep Morris has one less defender to run against. It opens up the underneath and intermediate routes.

I agree with Samuels. You don't want to sell your playcalls. His value as a deep threat is bigger than his value as a decoy.

I don't see a reason not to give him Banks's work. I don't really care for Banks.

I just want to say we need to sign Jairus Byrd.

Not because he's a great player and it would be a smart signing, or any of those other things. No, no, that's silly.

We need to sign him because one of my good friends is a huge Bills fan, and it would drive her UP THE FREAKING WALL FOREVER! She's one of those people who does the "I would marry him" thing, and Byrd is consistently at the top of her list (CJ Spiller keeps disappointing her, though the new TE is climbing quickly). I would laugh SO hard, for SO long, even after I inevitably get kicked in the nads.

I'd bring Merriweather back next year, but I would have a plan B behind him who was not Reed Doughty. There is virtually zero chance Jackson is on any NFL roster next season let alone ours IMO.

What a find, Dukes. Good job, dude.
Dri Archer will end up in the 4th round IMO

He's really a MEH kind of OLB. Seems like another guy from FSU who is alright but not as good as he was touted to be. Probably goes mid rounds IMO

CJ Spiller, disappointing? He's in my top-10, easily.

I wrote this a little bit ago, beginning of November in fact and it aligns with you.

I think McDonald is overrated. He's undisciplined in his coverage, gives steps and plays loose coverage. He's often in the box for run support and usually is assigned to cover TEs. Undisciplined in so much as trying for a kill-shot in the open field, but when he encounters NFL type talent (Franklin of UCLA) he just whiffs and looks bad. So I question the "technician" aspect of his abilities, that were often credited to his father's skillset. He's more of a SS than a FS.

He can't cover the Slot. So he's less dynamic in the pass defense category, less of an all-around "defensive back," than some guys who are hybrid Corners turned FS, like Tony Jefferson from OU.

His change of direction lacks against the truly sudden players. You don't want him one-on-one against a receiver with quick change of direction. And he'll get torched over-top by the truly elite outside receivers of the NFL with speed.

Against UCLA, he took some very poor angle of pursuit, ended up missing tackles in the open field - one that I recall clearly was a run that Franklin turned into a TD.

He's just not an impact playmaker or a difference maker. (To quote Steve)

Another point, his lack of speed was clearly evident against Oregon. That's an early view at the speed level that the NFL will hold.

I'd want Elam much more than McDonald.

It's so funny when I'm on the same wavelength on so many fronts with you. And to be sure there are times I totally disagree about a player or set of abilities, but not here. As the points below align.

They'll re-sign him. At least it should happen. But can anyone say highest paid safety in the NFL? Because I can.

    He's playing like it too.

Couple that with the cap sanctions and "ipso fatso" I'm right.
