I don't know about you guys, but I doubt they take an offensive linemen this year.... MAYBE 1 but probably in the late rounds.
there's a glut at OL now, you have the starters, TW, KL, WM, CC and ?
backups, Lerib, Gettis, Hurt, Pashos, Trueblood, Compton.. One of those guys will be the RT, which leaves 5 others fighting for backup spots.. I don't see any new o linemen unless there's an absolute steal sitting on the board.

which may allow the team to focus on the secondary, wr, te and rb...
    should be interesting!
Barry Cofield is LEGIT... no more nonsense about we need a "real" NT... HE IS THE REAL DEAL!!!! He goes to the Pro Bowl this year, book it!!!

    My updated mock draft.

Round 2. Robert Alford - CB - Southeast Louisiana
Round 3. DJ Swearinger - SS - South Carolina
Round 4. Duke Williams - FS - Nevada
Round 5. Kerwynn Williams - RB - Utah State
    Round 5. Theo Riddick - RB/WR - Notre Dame
    Round 6. Montori Hughes - DE/DT - Tennessee-Martin
Round 7. Mychal Rivera - TE - Tennessee

Only issue I have with it is not including an OT. Thoughts?

I like this. Very solid. I might go ILB with our other 5th instead of Riddick ... mainly so we have depth going into next year when we will surely lose Fletcher.

    ---------- Post added March-15th-2013 at 12:50 PM ----------

I like the trade down scenario that nets us three 3rds. Trade 51 to SF for 61, 125, 150 ... trade 61, 125 and 155 to MIA for 77 and 82.

77: Darius Slay, CB Mississippi State
82: DJ Swearinger, SS South Carolina
85: Ryan Swope, WR Texas A&M
    116: Duke Williams, FS Nevada
    147: Kevin Reddick, ILB UNC
    150: Montori Hughes, NT Tennesee-Martin
181: Kerwynn Williams, RB Utah State
    212: OLB

I don't know about spending the first 3 picks on the secondary. But it would certainly make our Nickel D pretty interesting. Another option in the 4th or 5th could be Lavar Edwards. Can never have too many pass rushers, and with Orakpo/Jackson on expiring deals, he's good depth.

Also on the d-line, Josh Boyd is someone who'd fit well with us. Montori Hughes kind of has some red flags:

Hughes’ collegiate journey has not been ideal, in terms of the maturity and consistency NFL scouts look for in top-tier prospects. Academic issues forced him to go to Hargrave Military Academy for a semester after high school graduation instead of beginning his career with the Tennessee Volunteers. He was suspended for the 2010 regular season finale, as well as from team activities during the following offseason, for violating team academic rules while at Tennessee, and eventually was dismissed from the school after playing a part in a dorm incident in May 2011.

With Kerwynn we wouldn't need Theo. I would probably go lb or wr with that Montori slot.

With one of our 7 picks would like OT in case Compton does not have enough speed ,ILB in case Robinson does not get back to speed,RB in case Helu has slowed down and T Davis or K Williams does not help. Certainly secondary picks as we have questions about Berstine injury,Meriweather injury,Minnifield injury and Jackson being in shape plus can Crawford, Gomes and Pugh step up; also can Lindsey, Holland and Murphy make it. Last a TE if Davis has lost his speed and blocking or Peterson does not pan out.

What I consider our biggest problem on the OL is LT depth. Trueblood, Pashos, Compton, Hurt... All those guys can play RT, but any of them at LT is courting disaster, imo. That's why I was hoping we'd find an RT that had the versatility to move over if necessary.

This is a big concern of mine as well. I'm marginally confident in our depth across the board, but losing Trent would be devastating.

On a related note, I know all teams sustain injuries, but it's incredible how many 'Skins sustained major (even possibly career threatening) injuries.

There will be 10-12 OL in the training camp. 10 OL are currently signed and I don't see any of those guys not making it to training camp. You generally won't use a pick on a guy who you don't even think will make it to TC.
A bad plan well executed may work. A good plan badly executed will always fail.

Default Drafting a CB..tangent on drafting rookie players in general...and Shamrako Thomas

For the most part rookie players, especially at key positions OL(LT), CB, QB tend to have their ups and downs as rookies. But, that doesn't mean they're not contributing. Even Trent Williams was up and down as rookie, by thats to be expected/accepted imo. Its the improvment factor/potential that makes putting up with rookie performace worthwhile. (And neither here nor there some rookies -even unheralded guys at tough positions like Sam Shields- can come in a perform at a high level right away)

    Tangent ensues....
Given its likely a rookie player/CB especially one that isn't drafted in the 1st round will struggle what do we do?
Imo you look at your starting point. Our secondary/pass coverage was terrible which made our overall defense bad.
And its not like the individual memebers of the defense and secondary were stellar, rather they contributing parties to the sub-par defense.
So if your current individual memebers are performing below average and are bringing down the overall defense what do you lose by replacing them with a younger player who, admittedly might not be better right away, might struggle but will be younger, cheaper and provide the chance for improvement?

TLDR: Our secondary/CBs were bad there is little to be lost by replacing them with a rookie CB even if they struggle.

What do you think about him compared to Shamarko Thomas? I'm not seeing a big enough difference between the two to draft Elam in round 2 compared to Shamarko in round 3. I think Shamarko is a bit quicker but not quite as good when going downhill as Elam. But that could change.
    Here's what I see:
Physically they are similar. Elam is about an inch taller and is bit quicker and smoother in his movements. Shamarko weighs a little more 5ish lbs and has a bulkier upper body but Mako also has more straightline speed(in fact Mako has elite straight line speed).

Elam in comparison to Mako is to my eye a more in control player. He's a more consistent tackler in both form (wrapping) and in angles. When I watch the cut-ups Mako misses more tackles and takes more bad angles then Elam.

Coverage styles: Mako plays more like a NB or 'money' in the box LB/SS then he does deep coverage. Elam has played in the same role but you can also see Elam playing a lot more single post FS then Mako.

I would rather have Elam in the 2nd (if we're lucky) then Mako in the 3rd because I think Elam is the better SAF and could fit as a FS in our scheme. He's more prepared to play FS sooner because he's already played the position from the angles he'll see from our scheme. All things being equal I have a preference for SEC guys he's used to the bright lights and circumstance of playing being time football. And Elam to my eye is a more consistent tackler.
BTW- I've liked Mako for awhile even pre-dating his combine performance.
