I don't think it's a secret that it was only until a couple seasons ago where the light seemingly came on for Vick as a passer. What he'll always be remembered for are the plays he made with his feet, not his arm.

Yes Vick does have rushing yards and rushing TDs. But he also has a boatload of missed games which kills a team but doesn't show up as a stat.

Yes Michael Vick. Why is he made out to be a great QB? His numbers suck over 11 years... Not one single "great" season.

• On November 15, 2010, Vick became the first player in NFL history with 300 passing yards, 50 rushing yards, four passing touchdowns and two rushing touchdowns in a game. Vick also became the first player in NFL history to have three passing touchdowns and two rushing touchdowns in the first half of a game.
• In 2006, Vick became the only quarterback in NFL history to rush for over 1,000 yards during the regular season.
• In 2006, Vick set the NFL record for most yards per carry in a season with 8.4.
• Vick (1,039 yards) and Dunn (1,140) became the first QB/RB tandem in NFL history to each go over the 1,000-yard rushing mark in the same season. They became the fourth set of teammates in league history to each have 1,000 or more yards.

You're absolutely right. I would even go on to say that the 90s were different because of the recent emphasis on that same illegal contact penalty you referenced (a penalty which I don't think should even exist).

This is very true (toss in the head slap that d-linemen were allowed to do as well), but on the flip side, QB's back then didn't have to deal with many linemen who could run a sub 5 sec 40, or linebackers running 4.7-4.8 40's. Can't really compare decades, as the defensive side of the ball gets so many more good athletes today. Today, it seems like every team has a pass rusher or two (or even more) who can get there on any given play. Few teams back then could say that.

Anyway, I wonder how Vick would have done if someone like Reid was his coach from day one.

I do think that in a way, the increased emphasis on getting to the QB via the blitz has allowed QB's with great vison and football brains (Brady, Manning) to amass passing yards because they know how to take advantage of the one on one match ups one finds when teams blitz. They blitzed less before guys like Buddy Ryan went nuts with new defensive schemes specifally designed to knock out the QB.

I think people that underrate the importance of converting 1st downs by rushing will always underrate the ability of a 'running' QB.
