THANK YOU! I've been screaming this for years. I hate, absolutely hate when someone tries to merge over immediately, stops and holds up traffic in the merge lane. I also hate the dickwads that don't want to let 1 car merge in front of them. Really? We're going 5 mph and you can't give up one fricking car space in front of you? If people would ride the entire length of the merge lane and the traffic in the right lane would let every other car merge in, traffic would run so smooth and wouldn't come to a grinding halt. Why do people don't know how to merge? Why? Why don't you know how to do it?

And also, they banned texting in North Carolina (not South Carolina of course) and I still see people doing it. Please, please, someone enlighten this poor stupid bastard and tell me what in the hell are they looking at on their IPhones in the middle of the godamn highway? What is so important? Pertinent? What could you possibly be looking at? Are you that bored driving a car? How about the radio? You know, listen to some music or do like I do, turn on sprortstalk and yell at the idiot Panther fans.

I don't get the cell phone thing, really, I don't get it. I probably never will.

In the DC area I've never seen so many people speed up and race through people to be the first ones to a red light. It's ridiculous.
Not living in the DC or Baltimore areas I can only speculate, but I will speculate away:

The difference between Boston's bad drivers and everyone elses' is that the bad drivers here are mostly good drivers who wilfully break the rules. Bad drivers in other places I've been to, including the DMV, are more of a mix of misbehavers and clueless idiots. Another thing that encourages the behavior here is that cops rarely if ever pull you over for a violation. It's unlikely that the presence of a cop car would stop anyone here from breaking the traffic laws. But we all know that and act accordingly.

When some jerkwad misses the front of my car by one foot while I'm doing 75 and he's doing 90 and going across 4 lanes of traffic, I am a bit angry yes, but there's also a grudging respect that he pulled it off so well. *******.

They need to change these rankings:

    Most clueless drivers
    Most timid drivers
    Most lawless drivers

    Any other categories?

You all are right when you say that people who don't let one car over are idiots. It is just one car!!! People are idiots man.

But it's unfair to judge an area based on accidents, because I can tell you that driving in the DMV, usually when somebody is doing something stupid on the road they usally have VA tags. But it is what it is, I just drive to do what I am supposed to do and pray that everybody else is doing the same.

Yeah man that sucks to. What is just as worst is the fast drivers in the right lane. I tend to be in the right lane more now since I am driving this minivan (but I can still giddy up when I have too ) I hate when people get on my back when the left lane is clear for passing. It's is really annoying.

Yeah, but I think that Chicago drivers are actually pretty good overall. That's just a bad and frustrating road. It was one of the first urban highways ever built, and they didn't know some of the basic design rules for keeping traffic flowing and safe that we now take for granted.

I think Florida drivers or whereever they are Originally from, suck. My car insurance doubled when I moved here last year. Also, I hate Michigan drivers- their driving sucks and that's not because I lived in Ohio for 14 years; they really can't drive.

Haha, funny coincidence. I'm working on a freeway merge/diverge problem for my traffic engineering class and decided to log in here, and you just happened to quote my post.

But yeah, unfortunately, people drive stupidly. We even have a variable to represent people's stupidity (depending on what part of the country you're in) in our traffic flow equations.

    Video at link:

D.C. driver makes wrong turn, drives through circle and into park area

He drove right through the middle of Logan Circle, parked there, and then drove around the circle's sidewalks before exiting onto the street.

Jason Espeland: Road rage leads to bully beat down in Boca Raton, police say

BOCA RATON, Fla. -- Jason Espeland picked the wrong guy to pick on.

After police say he repeatedly rammed a man's car in the middle of traffic, and the guy confronted him in a parking lot down the road, 23-year-old Espeland threw a few punches and regretted it.

The 23-year-old victim — whom police did not identify — replied with a fury of counter punches and kicks, which promptly dropped Espeland to the ground with two swollen eyes and a cut above his brow.

Baltimore is number 2 and DC is number 1 with the worst drivers. Does this surprise anyone?

Sure as hell doesn't surprise me and I live in a suburb of Baltimore on the DC side.
It does surprise me. This is FoxNews trying to pile on DC again.

No seriously, I don't agree. I've lived in quite a few different parts of the country and I don't think DC drivers are anywhere near the worst.

Drive in the left lane, pass on the right. The little highway we do have, most people don't break 50 and the turn lane is on the right (the passing lane). I've also been stuck behind a horse.

The pothole preservation society is huge here. Makes driving in PA look like butter.

We honk horns to say hello, go ahead and thank you. Happy honks, never in anger.

    You can drink and drive.

Head lights are all angled to the right, which in the states is great. Here on island, we drive on the other side, so the lights shine right in your face and because it's so mountainous here, it's usuallly high beams.
I went on my Honeymoon in St. Croix about 5-6 years ago, and we rented a car. People were VERY friendly like you said, and would stop in the middle of moving traffic to let us merge in from a side street. I got screwed up when we'd come to an intersection, and had to cross onto a different street. Driving on the left side, on the left side of the road is not easy when you've driven in the US for over 20 years.

The "off-road" roads were very interesting as well.

BTW, I LOVED St. Croix - I'd highly consider moving there one day.

After reading this thread, it just seems that no matter where a person lives, they live with the worst drivers. It's easiest to remember the close calls, the almost accidents, cut offs, middle fingers, etc, etc and that's what leaves a bad taste in peoples mouths.

It wouldn't shock me at all if someone from Pierre, South Dakota logged in here and claimed they have the worst drivers ever. Wherever you are, that's where the worst drivers are.

Anyway, a few months ago I was driving down Clarendon Boulevard (it's a one way with fairly heavy traffic depending on the time of the day for those who don't know) in Arlington when an old woman turned out of a parking lot and started going the wrong way Thank goodness it was early in the morning and there wasn't a whole lot of traffic but it was definitely a scary experience.

Woman to Wear ‘Idiot’ Sign for Passing Bus on Sidewalk

The Cleveland woman who was caught on camera swerving onto a sidewalk in order to pass a school bus full of children will have to stand at the intersection wearing an “idiot” sign, a judge has ruled.

Sheena Hardin, 32, received her sentence Monday in a Cleveland Municipal Court where she pleaded no contest to the charges of not stopping for a school bus and reckless operation on a street or highway.

Judge Pinkey S. Carr ordered Hardin to stand at the intersection of E. 38th Street and Payne Avenue next Tuesday and Wednesday mornings wearing a sign that says “Only an idiot drives on the sidewalk to avoid a school bus,” court records show.

I was in the left lane this morning. Guy in the middle lane cuts over with barely any room, of course no turn signal. I saw him and kind of anticipated he'd do something stupid. You know you can observe the cars around you and just see the one moron sticking out like a sore thumb. I made jesture at him like I was going to backhand him. Then I let it go. That's what you gotta do. Something Jason Espeland didn't do. What's even dumber, is the fact that he took his 2013 car and rammed it. How do explain that to the insurance company? Why would you get so mad as to damage your own vehicle over something as minor as someone cutting you off?
