LSF, this story goes against Feminism. This story is paternalistic to women. This guy got an outragous sentence becasue he kidnaped a woman. He would not have gotten such an outragous sentence if he had kidnapped a man. This story says women need to be sheltered protected and given special advantages cause they aren't able to look after themselves.
That and becasue he tripped the topical buzword "hang um high" tripwire... WATERBOARD, ignoring the fact he used rootbeer which unless he had a two liter jug wouldn't have been a very effective choice of waterboard material.
What sentence would a criminal expect to recieve in Florida for an average violent assault? 2-4 years.
Rape, which the guy did not commit? 6-8 years
Murder.... 12-19 years.
This numb nuts got Life, + 35 years; not because of what he did, but because of who he did it too; and how he acted in custody... which is stupid... And if that's what Feminists stand up for today... special irrational and idiotic sentences for crazy ****s who run afoul of the legal system WHEN DEALING WITH WOMEN; then they are part a the problem with socieity and no longer part of any solution which serves our greater interests...
When a judge doesn't have the descression to be lienent on a fifth grader regardless of sex, who passes a note scribbled in crayon to a bank teller requesting money; but can do this to an obvious crazy guy... we are failing the common sense test as a society... Root beer indeed.
The term Waterboard got this guy 20-30 years added to his sentence.. Even though what he did with a can of rootbeer likely had little resembelence to what George Bush, Dick Cheney, and friends said WAS NOT TORTURE when done by professionals, and ordered done hundreds of times to happless Al Quada suspects.

"The Internet is like a herd of performing elephants with diarrhea: massive, difficult to redirect, awe-inspiring, entertaining, and a source of mind-boggling amounts of excrement when you least expect it" - I wish I had said this.
Mighty presumptuous of you JMS. Do you know anything about this creep's prior history? (I don't, but I imagine it is anything but squeaky clean.) Did you take into account that he jammed the barrel of a loaded firearm into the victim's eye socket? Did you consider that the victim's children were in the next room cowering in terror during this crime? That he took her to a church the next day armed and daring her to do something about it? I'm sure another factor in the sentence was that - just before sentencing - this guy showed no remorse for his actions, blamed the victim, and was downright arrogant toward the judge and the court.
To me it seems the fact that she was a woman was but a minor factor.
Edit: Or no factor... from the Orlando Sentinel:
Out of prison for just 11 months when he committed the crimes, Harris also was convicted of possession of a firearm by a convicted felon. As a prison-release re-offender, the judge was required by law to sentence him to life without parole.

Also from the Sentinel:
After the jury's verdict, Harris pleaded no contest to pending charges of failure to register as a sex offender and two counts of child abuse, the State Attorney's Office said.
Since May 2011, Harris has been in prison on concealed-firearm convictions in Volusia County. He was scheduled for release on April 21, 2014.
He previously was sentenced to a little more than five years for aggravated battery on a pregnant woman, depositing checks with intent to defraud, aggravated battery with a deadly weapon and possession of a controlled substance.
A real peach of a guy...
Wrong.

"He pinned her to the floor, smacked her and poured root beer on her face as he choked her, according to trial testimony. He cocked a gun and stuck it in her eye."
This single incident earns a life sentence without parole? No history was referred to in the article.

Here is his statement given to the judge before sentencing.
The guy is a criminal, a violent criminal, but he didn't deserve this sentence for his offense.“With all due respect, sir, I understand the jury has in fact found me guilty of the alleged charges although my innocence still remains,” Harris said, “... so regardless of the years you sentenced me to, I ask sir that you consider the fact that nobody was actually harmed or hospitalized. I also feel that my character was truly assassinated by the prosecutor and most definitely by the media, of which I know you have no control over.”

So his life sentence is worth 43 years in prison. Then the judge sentenced him to an additonal 20 years in prison.... meaning Mr. Harris got 63 years for this violent crime...
In florida as I previously pointed out your average murder recieves between 12-19 years in jail.

Never call me out on the math.

I kind of figured this was not a joke thread, but on ES, you never know.
This is one of the strangest things I have ever heard. Dude should have been thrown under the jail...
