Default Do you generally vote for the same political party as your parents?

This has always been an interesting concept to me. For those that grew up with politics talked about in your household, how much influence did you parents and family have over your political beliefs?

After you vote in the poll, you can explain what political party your parents follow vote for and the party you generally vote for if you like. (Try not to focus on individual issues and keep it more to party platforms)

For me personally, my parents almost always vote Democrat as do I. I feel there has been significant political influence from my family while I was growing up.

My parents usually vote Democrat, though not always. My dad has on occasion voted for the Republican.

And yes, that's pretty much me too. At least for President.

I tend to vote less party and more the person at the state and especially the local level. The only candidate I've ever actively campaigned for or contributed money to was a Republican school board member.

Growing up, Mom was a Dem, Dad a Repub.
    Now both are Repub.
I started out voting mainly Repub. Now having realized that in Maryland my vote doesn't really matter since the state is 70% blue, I vote 3rd party when I can.

I think so since they were unaffiliated, but we never really discussed politics much.(aside from cursing them)

pretty sure the political scene has changed over that time anyway.

My parents are died-in-the-wool democrats. Dad was a union electrician for 42 years, prior to his recent retirement. (Congrats!!) Mom is a labor and delivery nurse, and has a soft spot for the more "needy" patients she sees nightly.

Dad is very attentive to politics, and will debate fiercely. Mom is more passive, not quite the "go in and pull every 'D' lever" type, but close.

I, on the other hand, remain fairly conservative, in spite of the fact that I'll be leaving the GOP as soon as this election is over.

Though I disagree with both of them on a whole host of topics, I really respect the fact that they have always stressed the importance of voting, regardless of my positions. As long as I vote, I'm doing OK in their eyes.

^^that's a good point i should have mentioned.

my parents have never told me who i should vote for despite feeling a lot of political influence over the years. as long as I vote, that's what matters to them even though they'd probably like if i voted D

I vote democrat and am liberal but not just because my parents are. The way they raised me is a core reason why I believe in the things I believe in.

My dad immigrated to this country right around the time when Nixon was running for president (68'). He used the 'silent majority' southern strategy, and that most certainly affected the way my father, as a minority, viewed GOP politics. I certainly come from a solidly D family. However, I'm pretty anti-Democrat and Republican. Neither party, at least on the national level, cares about individual people. It is all a money game.

That would be a negative. My brother and I are definitely the black sheep of our immediate family.

Sort of. When I was younger my mom and dad had different political views and I didn't really agree with them much.
But by the time I was able to vote my whole family was voting Republican, but not really because of any political influence, we just cared about the same stuff.
This time around I'm not sure who any of us are voting for.
My mom has expressed displeasure in both parties.
My dad will probably vote Republican since he isn't very political, and maybe my brother although he's not happy with the party.
Not sure who I'm voting for or if it's worth it to vote this time around.

Someone will have to check the voter rolls to see if my mother is still voting, she's been dead for five years now.

We don't talk politics in my family. It's irrelevant to us at the end of the day.

I'd respectfully suggest a write-in. That's what I'm doing this time around. Take the time to find someone who espouses the views you hold dear, and write them in.

If enough of us do that, it's my opinion that eventuall the "big two" will have to take notice.
