My dad votes Republican and my mom usually votes Republican but she voted for Obama last election. She will not be voting for Obama this election. She's not big into politics, though. My dad'll go off on funny democrat rants, though

I usually vote repub, but I will vote different party lines when it comes to local and state.

Split for me, Dad is typically a GOP voter in New Hampshire, Mom is a Dem voter now living in Maryland.
I live in Kentucky and refuse to vote for the idiots on the national level.

growing up just inside the beltway in suburban Maryland, a very liberal area, politics was a frequent topic of discussion at my house (and at school). Not in a "dems are good pubs are bad" kind of way, but policies and keeping up with things that were going on. Growing up in that environment surely shaped some of the things that I value now.

My liberalism on the cultural issues make it very difficult for the Pubs to win me over on the federal level right now, despite my dissatisfaction with Dems.

My political views were influenced by my grandfather who was a liberal. Same with both of my parents.

Although my Dad works for a federal agency and has been quite disappointed by the policies enacted by the current administration. He isn't as enthusiastic about the Dems anymore, having seen first hand how they operate at the federal level.

Still, he prefers that to the alternative.

I grew up on the floors of Democrat campaign floors licking envelops and folding flyers.

I was never a Democrat. I kind of am now though.

My parents are democrats and I have always voted that way, The first presidential election I could vote in was 04 I didn't really like Kerry but then again I never really cared for Dubya. I voted for Obama I will vote for him again really only because he's the lesser of two evils barely though. My wife's parent are repubs and it's been kind of good to be exposed to a different viewpoint which I didn't get growing up.

Living in a swing state kind of sucks the attack ads are killing me but at least my vote matters i guess.

Leaning right or left is a personality type issue. You really don't have much say in it. Your personality type dictates.

I've read that too. From James Davison Hunter on culture wars. The argument is that there is an impulse towards orthodoxy and a polar opposite impulse towards progressivism.

I definitely tend towards progressivism in most parts of my life. I don't think many people are wholly one way or the other though, which is why a lot of people have issues on which they diverge from the standard party line.

I think your parents have a big role in shaping whether your fundamental tendencies are towards orthodoxy or progressivism. Your environment certainly does. And changing environments often cause changes in world view.

This makes some sense. When I was younger I simply towed the family line and supported GOP ideals, then when I finally got out on my own and saw how things really are in the world I slowly came to my senses.

No, I do not. My Mom and Dad are both liberals and plan on voting for Obama.

I was very pro Democrat in high school but since I've been old enough to vote I've been a Republican.

Since I started voting we have voted the same...granted, that was only the last election

Not sure if we'll vote the same for this one - I'm feeling pretty inclined to vote for someone other than these two candidates and I know my dad has voted independent before.

Remember when it was rude to ask people who they were voting for? I remember my parents telling me to never ask people that, and now I rarely will. Though, with Facebook and everything, there is really no need to ask, people just scream it out loud (not that that's a bad thing...most of the time )

Nope. My father is a libertarian and my mother is pretty liberal. I'm certainly not a libertarian or a diehard Dem. I describe myself as a moderate that, as of late, hasn't turned left so much as I've turned away from the right.

No. They voted McCain the last election and they said they will probably vote Obama this election. I voted 3rd party last election.

I grew up with both parents staunch Republicans. I get **** all the time for being just about the only Democrat in my family. Democrats were never given any legitimacy in my household, I was taught that George Bush is awesome and John Kerry was the bane of everything good. Eventually my logic lead me to become a liberal. I listened to some of Obama's speeches without writing it off as liberal hogwash and found I actually agreed with most of what he said.
