The wifi problems from last night were related to someone deleted a verification page from Apple's servers for a while.

I'm not sure what genius at Apple decided to make your wifi connection dependent on a page being available on their server but it was the cause of the issue.

I was under the impression that Apple got rid of google maps for the purpose of promoting their own new maps program... no?

So, basically this thing is not working real well so far though, right?

I don't care what people say, Apple is not what it used to be, no matter how much money it has in its piggy bank.

It might be a win for Google not to make a maps app for Apple. (I'm probably wrong though lol)
I think there is a risk/reward for Google. If Apple's maps are really bad enough to make a large number of people switch away from iPhones, allowing Android to gain huge market share, then they should wait it out to achieve monopolistic control of the mobile operating system market. But if Apple's maps eventually get better to the point that Google Maps no longer completely dominates the market, then it will hurt Google in the long run, because they will lose their near-monopoly on maps without gaining a monopoly operating system.

They're also definitely giving up revenue right now by not having an iOS app. Remember that Google doesn't actually make any money from Android phones being sold. They only make money from ads, regardless of what platform they are on. And Google Maps absolutely does include ads. Haven't you ever searched for a business and gotten a "sponsored" result? When you search for generic words like "pizza" in Google maps, some of the results are ads that companies pay for: http://support.google.com/places/bin...n&answer=31662

Google has a map app ready to go for iOS 6. It's up to Apple to approve it.

And if you were planning to get one of these without pre-ordering, good luck:

Who knows what the reason was, but iOS has always had a Maps program developed by Apple. Previously they licensed their underlying data from Google, but that deal has expired. And iOS maps lagged behind Android maps because the data that Apple was getting from Google wasn't the same that Android was getting. Apple is now licensing their data from TomTom. Nobody seems to be clearly saying who canceled the Google Maps deal - Apple or Google.

By the way, looking at the pictures before the app crashed: http://news.cnet.com/2300-11386_3-10013873.html

Isn't that a rip off from Google Maps? Didn't apple just set some precedent for this thing?

Huh? Are you talking about the iOS5 pictures? Or iOS6?

In iOS 5 (and previous versions), Apple had a deal with Google that allowed them to use Google Maps data. And in iOS 6, the similarities are only because islands are actually shaped the same in real life.

I was just thinking that Google might be enjoying this right now. Give it another couple weeks when a lot of people have the iPhone 5 coupled with the IOS upgrade on previous models. Mountains of people will be complaining about Apple Maps and it will be big media news. This will be like free advertising for Google. Then Google comes to the rescue for millions of people by releasing the Google maps app on iOS lol. That is of course if Apple approves the app since they have all the control. A big backlash from customers will force Apple to approve it

We are excited to offer this service with innovative new features like Flyover, turn by turn navigation, and Siri integration. We launched this new map service knowing it is a major initiative and that we are just getting started with it. Maps is a cloud-based solution and the more people use it, the better it will get. I haven't really done much more than play around with it yet, but I plan to try the Apple Maps in the car with turn-by-turn directions but I'm keeping a shortcut to maps.google.com on my home screen in case it really sucks and for public transportation.
