Default Why don't they extend the goal posts?

Pretty simple question. At least five times a year I see a field goal in which the result is ambiguous, exactly like the end of the Patriots/Ravens game last night. Did it go in or didn't it? With all the controversy surrounding the NFL these days this seems like an obvious answer. Extend them upwards, or at least run a wire from the top to the roof so it can be clear if the ball went in or out.

    Mad that the Ravens won?

No, I don't care about either of those teams. I dislike both.

It just seems like such an obvious solution to a problem. Run a wire from the top of the goal post to the ceiling, that way you can tell if the ball went in or not. It's a head scratcher why the NFL doesn't do that. Until then there are going to be situations like the one last night.

Was pretty clear that it went in. I can understand that if you we Pro-Pats or Anti-Ravens that game you would think differently.

Yeah I think it went in too. I'm speaking in general terms. They should extend the goal posts, I've been thinking this for three years now.

I think even the scab refs can't screw up a FG. Perhaps being able to "challenge" it is a better option?

That sounds like a good idea. But then the same problem is going to happen. Refs are going to look at the tape and see the ball go right above one of the posts. It will be hard to determine if it is good or not. Chances are it would've hit the post and bounced out (if the post went that high). But they can't make that call. If the posts kept going up this wouldn't be a problem.

I think it would be easier to just place cameras on the goal posts.

That's a good idea...since they have them on basketball backboards, that could work. But you know, if it makes sense, Da Commish will never go for it.

That sounds like the best idea I've heard regarding this topic.

They should put the refs on top of the uprights.

Uprights should be closed off and anything over it is no good.
Too bad there isn't a penalty for excessive underachievement. The Cowboys would be flagged. (Clayton)

Even if you did the camera at the top, theyd still have to make it a judgement call. Itd be much better if the goal posts were extended and if it came to it the ball would hit the upright and ricochet in, or hit and fall to the ground no good.

Im definitely on the "extend them" side of this.

Isn't there an infrared technology or something? I'm sure there is
The soldiers gave three cheers as they urged their tired horses north across the uneven hills. Some of the mounts, exhausted after a week of almost continual marching, began to lag behind; others, spurred on by their enthusiastic riders, began to edge past the regiment's commander. "Boys, hold your horses," Custer cautioned; "there are plenty of them down there for us all."

Birds would trigger it and the replacement refs would subtract the three points from the wrong team.
