Default RG3 versus other rookies and Expectations. 1st QTR review.

Before the season a lot of Redskin fans were worried that the hype was growing too quickly. If you turned on the TV at any hour of the day you were likely greeted by a smiling RG3 running around pushing Adidas or bland sandwiches. This man who hadn’t thrown a single pass in the NFL had grown men looking at their sock drawer dismayed over the lack of color and capes.

While the RG3 tour was taking place word was that Luck had no time for such exposure. He wanted to earn lucrative deals with his play… or some other such overly serious statement that was generally perceived to be more in line with the ideal stoic football field general stereotype. Plus, he’s like 2 inches taller and stuff.

In Seattle the little QB that could was telling anyone that would listen that he deserved to start in the NFL. They laughed and laughed but he just kept chugging along and in the end he did earn the starting spot. Moral of the story is that back up QB in Seattle has now topped the list of best job ever.

Also something about Weeden being old and Tannehill having a hot wife… in South Beach (Man plans, God laughs).

After a quarter of the season the stats are in and what they say is surprising:

    QB Rating
Name - NFL Rank – Rating
    RG3 – 4th – 103.2
    Luck – 24th – 75.4
    Wilson – 27th – 73.5
    Tannehill – 31st – 66.4
    Weeden – 32nd – 60.4

    Completion Percentage
    RG3 – 2nd – 69.4%
    Wilson – 21st – 60%
    Tannehill – 27th – 55.9%
    Weeden – 30th – 53.9%
    Luck – 31st – 53.3%

    Yards per Attempt:
    RG3 – 3rd – 8.6
    Tannehill – 16th – 7.3
    Luck – 21st – 6.9
    Weeden – 30th – 6.0
    Wilson – 31st – 5.9

This last stat will be seen as a bit of cherry pick on my part because I wanted some way to look at TD’s and turnovers in a way that takes into account QBs mobility as well as their passing. So I’ve taken total touchdowns and turnovers and added subtracted the bad from the good:

    Touchdowns to Turnovers
(Passing TD + Rushing TD) - (Interceptions +Lost Fumbles)
    RG3: (4+4)-(1+1)=+6
    Luck: (5+0)-(4+1)=0
Wilson: (4+0)-(4+1)= -1… we all know this one should be worse. Mmm-hmmm
    Weeden: (3+0)-(7+0)= -4
    Tannehill : (2+1)-(6+1)=-4

So there you have it skins fans. After a quarter of the season you have a QB that has clearly out performed even the high expectations of the media and delirious fans. Has this towns luck finally turned? The Redskins have a franchise QB, The Nats are division winners, the Caps are playoff staples, and the Wizards… ok I went one team too far, point is this town and this football team has a lot to feel good about. Enjoy it.

    HTTR.

I love seeing stuff like this. Great post. Griffin has been nothing short of spectacular and is everything we hoped he would be and more. If he keeps this up he will easily be the greatest rookie QB ever and could even get some MVP nods depending on how the rest of the season breaks down. I would honestly have him at number 2-3 right now with Schaub and Ryan being the only 2 people ahead of him. I have no idea what their stats are though just based on the 2 "best/hottest" teams QBs.

I also think we need to give credit where it is due and that is also with Mike and Kyle in the way the prepared him this offseason and their playcalling(though it has caused some big hits) that lets his amazing talent shine. They are still perfecting their craft and finding more and more ways to put RG3's skills to maximum use too.

Look out folks, this is going to be one crazy ride.

Griffin so far is playing well above the level of any of the other rookies.

It's almost too good to be true, so I'm going to try and temper my enthusiasm by saying it's still early in the season and anything can happen.

In short you are simply saying RGIII is a Beast amongst Trolls.

I appreciate he's played a game fewer, but Luck sitting at 31st in completion percentage is a real early season shocker to me.

    Hail.

Great post! Love seeing the stat breakdown and how far ahead he is from eveyrone else. He's outplaying some veterans as well! I'd love to see these stats against all starting QBs, but I'm too lazy and technologically difficient to search those out!

True but I think Griffin only has a couple more attempts than Luck does so the comparison is pretty even just by number of passes.

If this guy can stay healthy, I think he redefines the QB position. He is a potential Pro Bowler every year. We are in for great things with him. MAN it feels great.
Most fans wish their team had the first pick in the draft each year. I would be happy with the 32nd.

True we haven't really played any "great" or even aggressive defenses yet so let's see how he does as the defenses really become much tougher, starting in a few weeks.

Does anybody know where I can find stats on RGIII vs. the blitz? I know before the cincy game he was almost at a perfect QBR...

Griffin has been flat-out amazing this first month of the season.
In fact, I would go so far as to say that his play has not garnered ENOUGH attention.

Now with that being said, can he keep it up for all 16 games?
I remember being amazed when I found out that Cam was responsible for 35 td's scored last year, and remember thinking to myself how awesome it would be if the skins had someone who could score that many td's from the qb position...
it seemed like a pipe dream, and the best I could ever hope for was MAYBE 20.
Then along comes RG3 and he's on pace to account for 30+ this year, and I couldn't be happier!
Barry Cofield is LEGIT... no more nonsense about we need a "real" NT... HE IS THE REAL DEAL!!!! He goes to the Pro Bowl this year, book it!!!

Yeah, the law of averages will eventually pop up because he hasn't had a bad game yet. Still, it's good to wonder what defense will be able to slow him down, instead of wondering how long he'll take to adjust his game to the NFL.

B3 is playing like a seasoned vet. No comparison so far. I'd put him in the top 10 QBs right now.

Great stuff. Couldn't be more stoked to have RGIII at QB. He literally gives us a chance to win every game. Now if only the D and O-line could step it up. Although I was impressed with the OL play on Sunday.
