Most people who just sustained a concussion are typically unaware that they are experiencing symptoms of a concusion. Often times, they`ll realize weeks later that something wasn`t right. Granted, it`s a little different if someone was there to see the trauma... as opposed to it happening when someone wasn`t nearby to witness.

    Very incredibly tragic though.

    Very good point!

    truly tragic. Requiem in pace.

I know this is going to sound rather dumb, but I always wondered why it was life threatening to sleep after a concussion. What happens in there that is causes death?

Basically because if the victim goes to sleep there is no way to observe symptoms that may be indicative of brain injury. If the person is awake someone who is with them would be able to see that they have slurred speech, or confusion, or trouble staying conscious, or any other number of signs of trauma. If the person goes to sleep and they really do have specific damage to the brain (interior bleeding, reticular damage, etc.) as a result of their injury, then nobody would know and it would go untreated for perhaps several hours which can be just long enough to ensure that they don't wake up.

I see. Thanks! Am I correct in seeing it as not only staying awake, but staying awake with an observer?

As an outside observer, it's amazing to see the love and pain being felt by Redskins Nation over the loss of this young man.

It brings a tear to my eye knowing he is the same age as my son. I can't imagine the pain his parents and family are feeling.

Here's hoping the pain eases over time...and the love & fond memories continue for those of you who knew him.

You are indeed correct. As someone else pointed out, someone with a head injury may not be able to see the signs within themselves. A person who has suffered a concussion should not be left alone.

It's hard to tell sometimes. I had a couple from soccer/basketball injuries(not serious ones). Sometimes you don't even know you had one. All it takes is a elbow upside the wrong part of the head and you could get one and not even know it.

ive had 6 of them over the course of the last 10 years, each one worse than the previous, and i couldnt tell i had sustained one until after the 3rd or 4th, they are very tricky and difficult to treat..... i was lucky enough to have had people who knew exactly what to do around when ive sustained them, and for that i am grateful.... very sad royallypwned passed on from this RIP

Man that's tough. It just seems so random.

I remember having a concussion as a kid and being frustrated because my mom wouldn't let me go to sleep that night. I kept insisting that I was fine. Thanks mom.
