To me, Romney came off as a hectoring bully. Some of his admirers may construe that as an expression of authority but I actually think it will (along with his smirks, which famously helped sink Gore in 2000) not serve him well with mainstream voters.

Romney? Obama smirked like it was his job during the debate! The looking down and smirking and smiling helped sink Obama's performance tonight.

Certainly not a good showing by the POTUS, but Governot Romney still didn't give any specifics, and lied some more. Fact checkers need to get on it.
He said he was going to get tough on China, and Barack actually did a double-take, like "OH, you wanna go THERE?" and then never did. I thought for sure he'd hit Bain, the "47%" comment and another half a dozen or so points.

That's why I hate debates; in the interest (read; fear) of not being called "gotcha" journalism, the moderators often don't challenge political candidates. So the moderators are basically there for show. And they hardly ever ask the really tough questions. So you leave a debate still not knowing much more about and candidates policies than you did coming in.

Waking up the morning after, it's set in just how stunning and infuriating a lie Romney told about the 7 trillion dollar addition to the deficit he'd cause. He flat out said he wouldn't cut taxes. And he actually had the gall to be indignant over someone saying he would. CUTTING THE CORPORATE TAX RATE FROM 35% TO 25% IS A ****ING TAX CUT YOU SON OF A *****!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I can't believe what a piece of **** Romney is and now I'm legitimately furious. First off, it's inexcusable for Lehrer not to have stopped Romney immediately and pointed that out. It's inexcusable for him not to demand Romney name some of those magical loopholes he's going to close to raise revenue. And it's disappointing that Obama didn't KILL Romney for uttering that stunning, spectacular, Bald. Faced. Lie.

Get mad Obama campaign! The American people deserve someone vigorously defending them from such an egregious and obvious lying. Lehrer and Obama looked stunned by Romney's tactic. They hadn't expected it and hadn't prepared a response to it so the issue of him telling the lie was glossed over.

He said he would not cut taxes that add to the deficit. It was a flat out lie. There is no possible way for him to go through with his little 10% corporate tax rate cut and 20% across the board income tax cut, AND Bush era cuts extension, and come out revenue neutral from closing tax loopholes. The only options are 1.) he's decided not to go through with those proposed tax cuts he's been campaigning on, or 2.) He's lying about his cuts being revenue neutral.

Which is it?

Romney is going to get killed by the media for the lies he told. He's banking on the fact that not that many of the people he reached in the debate will be paying attention to the media aftermath to realize he was lying. Maybe it's a good strategy, maybe not. But it's despicable.

I agree with you. Although I hope most people are smart enough to see through the laughingly bad logic behind everything Romney proposed last night.

Still, I hope at some point in my lifetime, the Dems finally grow a spine.

Romney said all the right things that people want to hear, although almost all of it was wishful thinking. Massive tax cuts and increased military spending? What does that remind people of?

Romney has proposed very specific tax cuts. Anyway, I have to admit, I laughed when Romney did his "I have five boys so I'm used to someone repeating the same thing over and over..." line. That was fricking hilarious, though unnecessary. Like most of the folks here, I thought Romney came off as more polished (surprising as hell), and more engaged, but ultimately I don't think it will matter.

You do realize that America has the highest corporate tax rate in the world. So by lowering the rate from 35% to 25% and cutting out the tax loop holes that this will actually generate more tax revenue for the Federal government.
