The defense always caves when we need them to stop. This has been the case since 2004.

Thanks. Watching the secondary get picked apart, something not shown on TV, was important. Our odd-ball Cover 2/Zone was atrocious.

You guys can't have it both ways.

If Haslett called all out blitz cover zero, we're never in this game.

He went Greg Blache on us today and it worked.

Had the offense converted some third downs today and stuck with Morris, we win the game.

    One sack by Coefield.

Today's game was a head-scratcher from a logistical standpoint. The defense probably played their best game since Week 1, the offense was pretty awful.

Once RGIII left the game, the writing was on the wall.

The defense scores ANOTHER TD, but can't get the Falcons off the field when it mattered the most.

The secondary did about as much as you expect this group to do, but the pass rush probably hit an all-time new low. With the exception of the one sack and Kerrigan continuing to establish himself as elite, the pass rush was non-existent. Matt Ryan dropped back and every single time he had all day to look at every read which lead to all the passes in the flat to Gonzalez. There is no way Ryan was looking to make those passes but he ended up going with the only open guy because of the lack of pass rush.

Kurt Cousins comes in and gives the fans the usual false hope of a mediocre team being able to pull it off, but then ends any and all talk from the sensationalist media about a QB controversy.

Hard to be mad, if you had told me before the game that the defense would hold the Falcons to 24 points, I'd think the 'Skins were going to win.

This happens people, and elite NFL team versus a team still trying to put the pieces together.

I never asked for it both ways. Haslett is horrible and I've never had any confidence in him.

You want Ryan on his back, so when we blitz(because we have to) to get pressure and it exposes the outside, you're pissed because we didn't commit more to coverage.

Carriker and Rak going down, killed any thought of generating pass rush, unless we throw the kitchen sink at them.

And no, not every team has a future all pro DE,CB or S waiting in the wings at backup.

We've been dealt a crummy hand and all we can do is play it.

No, I want to stop watching TEs and WRs pull between our odd-ball coverage. I never once complained about lack of sacks or hits on Ryan. We had zero penetration, but that's not my argument.

Like it or not today was the best our D has played all season. It is what it is. We're missing two key figures in our front seven and neither safety would be starting. You need look no further than the 3rd conversion %. We didn't put up any points in the 1st qtr. If you're gonna say neither did Atlanta throw that out the window. We all knew Atlanta was going to put up points. The only question was how much. So whenever we got a stop it was a bonus and we had to capitalize. Say what you want about our D but they lived on the field because the offense couldn't convert. We all knew in order to slow down Atlanta's O we would have to control the clock w/ our run game. I was disappointed in the playcalling early. We came out pounding the rock only to try and get cute w/ gadget plays or too much passing.

I think we need a mix of both. You have to blitz some to keep them honest. (Of course, I say this haivng not watched the game. I don't get coverage in Guam. I'm going off of everything I read.)

So far through the first 5 weeks, Week 1 is the one week we seemed to play more pressure on defense, and we ended up disrupting a lot of the Saints timing. Of course, we are talking about the Saints, so there is that, but.....

The purpose of the cushion and zone is to bend but not break on defense. The problem is, the defense is breaking, even when we drop 8 guys back into coverage. So if the defense is going to break regardless of who we throw into coverage, why not try to blitz more to create QB pressure.

Everyone remember Greg Williams Defense of 2004? Granted, it was a 4-3, however the D-line on it's own hardly ever got to the QB, so he had to come up with other ways to create pressure on the QB, and that season the defense was very good. Sure, the secondary got burned once in awhile, but the defense is getting burned now, even when we rush 4, and drop everyone else into coverage. So why not roll the dice and try to manufacture more pressure?

Agreed. It's frustrating to watch but this is the style of defense that gives us the best chance to win. The defense has flaws and their best shot is to keep everything in front of them and force teams to string together a bunch of plays to score.

Two things I'd mention about that defense. Firstly, even since 04 the passing game has changed and opened up a lot. Secondly, while I believe that's probably the best defense we've fielded in the Snyder era a quick look back will show you that we played a lot of mediocre and worse QBs that year which helped us play the aggressive blitzing style so successfully.

True, but if you go back and watch the game, you'll notice that when Matt Ryan dropped back he was often forced into checking down to passes in the flat, which tells me the secondary was actually doing a somewhat decent job of stopping the big plays. The problem was Ryan had so much time to throw that he could always find Gonzalez in the flat. If you send an extra guy that either breaks through or causes the pocket to collapse, Ryan is forced to get rid of the ball before he has time to check down to the guy in the flat.

Defense got ran over. It was almost funny to watch the offensive of the falcons pulling three of our defenders 5 yards down field every other play.
