Leonard Hankerson: Patience

Why should we have patience with this guy? I still haven't figured out why Hank is held in such high regard. He has buttery hands and plays without any fire in the belly. So far he is just another bad pick and most likely will join Jacobs, Kelly, Thomas, Connell, etc. Hopefully I'm wrong....

Taylor Jacobs: 37 Rec 384 Yards 2 TD (Career Numbers, worlds greatest practice plater)
Malcolmb Kelly: 28 Rec 265 Yards 0 TD (21-game career numbers, always injured. Always)
Devin Thomas: 43 Rec 482 Yards 3 TD (Career Numbers, fell asleep in meetings, never worked for anything)

Hankerson: 39 Rec 505 yards 1 TD (In 13 games, has not fallen asleep in meetings, supposed to have good work ethic, only 23 years old)

I think your comparison fails. I did not include Connell in this b/c A. He actually had some good seasons -- if Hank can give us some of those, I'd be really happy; and B. Connell stole from teammates. I personally am still high on Hank -- I don't understand how everyone is giving up on him and inaccurately comparing him to the trio listed above, poorly.

To answer your question, I have no idea as I was referring to myself. I don't assume to know how others feel. For me, I'd love to be wrong about Hankerson, but I think he stinks. I'd much rather have a dynamic receiving corps with MANY good receivers including Hank, but I fear he just isn't very good and never will be. Pierre Garcon is our best pass catcher and he is more of a #2 type player, I think. The Skins are in big trouble if they are hitching their trailer to the development of Hank.

he broke many records set by santana moss, andre johnson, michael irvin, and reggie wayne at miami.... pretty good reason to have some optimism

Okay. Just a misunderstanding. We're pretty much on the same page. I wouldn't say Hank stinks, but I don't hold out much hope that he will emerge as a #1 or even a #2. It would be nice to be wrong.

I'd be perfectly happy if Hank just developed into a solid, reliable possession WR who can move the chains and make the tough catch on 3rd and 7.

Right now he's complete hit or miss and every pass thrown to him is an adventure.

Considering he really only played one or two games last year, this season is his de-facto rookie season.

It's way early to write him off at this point.

Let him grow/learn the position. No one ever realistically thought he'd be an AJ Green or Julio Jones (WR that would contribute right out of the gate).

Last year he played 4 games 13 Rec 163 Yards 0 TD, his stats this year are 9 games played 26 Rec 342 Yds 1 TD. I really hope he will play much better but I still have my doubts.

I understand skepticism towards him, it's just too early for cynicism. Isn't it it still pretty widely accepted that wrs seem to 'get' it in their 3rd season? Figure he's at best at 1.5 (and he has the pedigree), and I'm more than happy to suspend judgement.

I think what's more widely accepted is that WRs get cut if they don't get "it" by their third season. Actually, very few receivers get it by their third year. They either become special teams players or find a new occupation.

The question is really whether or not you can count on Hank to be at least a #3, because I don't think he'll be a very good special teams player. Garcon is a good #2 and Moss is probably gone. If Hank is not a reliable #3, the Skins need to find two pretty good receivers in FA. Also, Garcon makes $8.2M next year and that increases in 2014, so he has to show something special next year as well.

I've heard ex-player announcers talk about the learning curve, but can't recall any ex-receivers POV. Hadn't ever heard the 3rd year or bust angle, though it makes sense. Hank is definitely hit-or-miss, but I feel he at least deserves the next 1.5 seasons before we can give a final judgement. You're right about ST though, can't really see him excelling there.

He's currently our leading receiver, and averaging just over 13 yards per catch. He's coming into his own.

I'm starting to wonder if part of his struggles are that he has not fully recovered from his serious hip injury? I saw Hank take some big hits at Miami so when I saw him slide before getting hit in I believe the Giants game I started to worry that he's terrified of being hit on that hip again? He's plenty fast and has tremendous size I just think he needs a little longer, like most NFL receivers, to develop. Giving up on Hankerson now because he hasn't developed into an elite receiver a season after suffering a major injury in a game in which he was dominating seems pretty silly to me. I think we should keep letting him work out the kinks, get completely healthy and allow him to keep building a rapport with RGIII. The explosiveness and tremendous hands he displayed his last year at The U will come in time, don't give up on him yet.

I second these remarks -- Hankerson doesn't move the same as before -- he just doesn't seem to be at 100% yet. Also, I think WR coach Hilliard needs to work with him a little more, this guy is essentially a first year WR coming off a major injury -- I just hope he gets through this season healthy so he can come back in full form next season.
