I don't really believe in that stuff, it's irrelevant in the consideration to me.
Assuming the crime happened the way the article described, for me the question of just desert comes down to a few basic considerations.
A life is owed. If this had been my daughter or sister or loved one that had been violated and murdered in such a way, every fiber of my being would be compelling me to kill the man who had done it. I imagine it'd be the same for almost anyone. Every instinct I have would say that he must die.
A crime that monstrous raises questions about whether that man is even capable of being rehabilitated to a useful member of society. A crime that monstrous raises questions about whether or not the man even deserves the chance at rehabilitation.

He was on probabation for trying to strangle a 17 year old girl in 1981. If there is a hell, he should go there. No repentance will change anything IMO.
