I think the impact of Number 3 is far more than anyone is acknowledging. You have 2 ways to improve your team in the offseason...Draft and Free Agency. They are not, and should not, be treated independently of each other. You develop the needs of the team and then a strategy for acquiring them. We executed the draft with the expectation of having the money to fill other needs with free agency. Even once the penalty was determined I think they changed the way the 36 million would be enforced. It really was a class A ****ing by the league
Absolutely and only people like Chad Dukes could be so superficial about it that he could say something like "well that happened on Shanny's watch". Shannahan did EXACTLY what he should have done. There were a ton of down-sides to the uncapped year - we already discussed them. There was ONE advantage and it absolutely benefitted the teams that were mismanaged prior to the uncapped year. But so what? Then don't have an uncapped year. That was bargained for. Essentially Mara and company decided it was uncapped for those who couldn't benefit ALOT from it. Its the most absurd thing i have ever heard and honestly I don't think anyone can be intellectually honest and defend that penalty.
Now all I hear is "and we have no draft picks and we have no cap space" - as if Shanny made the RG3 trade AFTER the cap penalty came down! Not the case! He traded the draft picks obviously with a plan to use the plentiful cap space we had (we had a ton!!) to fix the back end and probably add some Offensive line depth. The penalty sentenced us to Polumbus, Tashard Jackson, Brandon Merriweather, Dhall, Joshn Wilson and Cedric Griffin. If you had to write down the positions that are costing us the most right now what would you write?
I would say that we have at least 3 different starters in the secondary. And at least one different WR. But you can assume that 18 million is 4 top notch starters. Or maybe 2 and some better depth. The Polumbus thing is more attributed to injury...but who knows...they may have targeted RT also. Honestly if you count the people we have lost to injury and the opportunities we lost because of the penalty you are talking 8-10 starters missing. And we get hit with it again next year also.
The afternoon on 106.7 is so bad...I don't know how anyone even listens to it
One of the things that worried me when we brought in shanny was that no super bowl winning head coach has won it all with their next team.
Quite frankly i dont think a new regime is the answer. But if shanny is walked, which if he did in fact lose the locker room then he should get shown the door, then i wouldnt be too upset with andy reid taking over.
Well said ... I am quoting because i want to highlight the point - I also wanted to add the reason why the uncapped season was scheduled in was to act as a poison pill before the two sides got to the lockout stage ... it was supposed to be bad for players as uncapped meant no salary floor (as more than 9 teams demonstrated) and bad for teams as there would be no regulation on players upper salaries and so wages for stars would skyrocket and teams with big $$ incomes would be able to establish a competitive edge which would take away parity which made the NFL compelling .....
Thats why it was there - everyone knew that was going to happen - but the owners insulated themselves by colluding they would not go crazy on salaries, except JJ and DS saw it as a way to clean up some cap issues and- sure get a competitive edge -(a little like Tampa did by paying peanuts in the capless season and so having buckets of $$$ in cap space to go into the biggest FA period in years and clean up .. )
We started planning for this years free agency a long liong time ago...
The top name...SEAN PAYTON
John Gruden is #2.
All the other D's with the pumped up schemes
You better run, better run, outrun my QB
All the other D's with the pumped up schemes
You better run, better run, faster than RG3.
Chris Peterson - head coach of Boise State. Record is something insane like 88 to 5. Offensive genius to go with our new superstar. Guy has success written all over him.
Prior to Harbaugh, the Niners last playoff appearance was 2002 roughly nine years before their last playoff appearance. No one thought two cents of the Niners last year when Harbaugh took over especially with Alex Smith at quarterback and no off season. Some of Mike Singletary picks were ridiculed but Harbaugh and the new Gm made some tweeks and whala a contender. What about Miami, who people thought they would be a laughing stock this year. You did not comment on Seattle.
Minnesota is 5 and 4 and have over achieved and that can be attributed to coaching. Qb play in Minnesota is suspect and so some would say the Vikings are a qb away. What about the Bucs at 4 and 4, a team with a rookie coach and have some identity. The Bucs that plays for sixty minutes and will still hit a team in a kneel down. All these teams I have name have made progress. Have the Skins made progress? A secondary and for that matter a defense on record to break the most yards allowed in a season in nfl history, an offense that cannot convert on third downs or for that matter a defense that cannot get off the field on third downs. No wide receiver on record for reaching a 1000 yard receiving for the year.
Three bright spots on offense with RG3, Morris, and offensive line play but what much more can this team hang their hat especially when I am naming teams that have made progress within a three year span? Time enough for Mike to turn this roster over into the players Mike wants and needs but here the Skins go again with a season less than 9 wins. Even Gibbs showed some progress in less than 3 years and actually made the playoffs two out of the four years.

We should think outside the box for a change... maybe a Ray Horton DC from Arizona, by the way he was on the Redskin staff before. Take a look at Gus Bradley DC from Seattle....we know how nasty that defense is. I would look at both of these guys for Head Coach, I know they are both DC, just bring in the right OC to mentor RGIII. Don't think it will happen though cuz Shanny will still be around.
Not sure about HC, but Charlie Weis or Rob Chudzinski as OC, and Rex Ryan as DC.
Zombie Vince Lombardi for HC
I'm willing to wait the 5 years on Shanallen, I mean it's been 21 or so years. I'd say fire Haislett, higher Spanos as DC and if the next 2 yrs O still looks good and D improves with Spanos then keep it like that. If it is still not great then whichever looks better at the time either Kyle HC lou DC or Lou HC with Kyle OC.
To me our O is the best I've seen in a long long time and the D the worst.
